I am thankful for my family which includes four chickens, three ducks and a
bunch of other feathered, finned and furry creatures. They bring me such joy.
I read recently that ducks and chickens have never met a day they didn't like.
I plan to try to be more like my chickens and ducks!

Thanks for all of you who know how special my babies are and don't think that it
is funny to have to share your dinner with chickens - one bite for me, one for
you, one for you, one for you and now one for me again.

Wishing you all a warm and feathery Thanksgiving.

A lot of the mutations aren't as hardy as the regular ones. That said, I had a female lutino who's lutino father lived to be nearly 30. She only made it to 15 :-(  She had a sinus infection as a young bird, and the vet thinks that later, that is where the infection started that eventually killed her.

Yeah, I've only got a few that go broody on me, mostly my Maran hens, and only one who is really vicious about defending her nest. Most of them will take treats and water from me, but not her!

You know my house chicken Nuggie never ever goes broody, I have one hen in the coop right now who is just waiting to peck me. She acts like she wants to pick a fight with me. LOL Its 6am here in Maryland rite now and they are all outside cackling. I just love the sound. Dianeandnuggie

Hi Linda,

Yours is a senior cockatiel indeed! You have done an amazing job keeping him healthy all these years.

It could very well be he is getting old. He could be getting a bit arthritic too, making it harder to climb around. You might try giving him some shelves or different surfaces.

It's also possible that something is going wrong with his health that would need a vet. I hate the idea of taking this little guy in, but you might want to consider it. Although if he's eating normally and otherwise acting normal, he could just be getting old and creaky like the rest of us :-)

My little cockatiel is only 14, so hopefully I'll have many more years with him. For such a tiny little bird, they sure are full of personality!

Dusty eats and responds to me normally and he does perch and climb some, but the last several weeks he has spent more time resting on the floor of the cage. Does anyone know how an old bird acts?
Thank you

Hi Diane,

I'd scale back on the bread. Not much nutritional value there at all, plus, if they are laying heavily, it will cut down the amount of layer feed they eat, and therefore the amount of calcium, which they really need. I do give scraps and leftover parrot food to my chickens, but hopefully not enough to tip their diet in a negative way.

They also save me all their heels of their bread. Now on my mail route as I deliver the mail I take notice of all the pumpkins that have never been cut out. I ask the people can I have their pumpkin when they are done with it. So In the evening when I get home now my hens fully expect that they will be sung to by me..LOL and get some pumpkin plus some bread plus the newest ritual is cut up apples. You might think im crazy but the whole time im outside with them they are chatting away squalking up a storm and they seem to lay more eggs this way. Also they get a flake of hay and their nests get lined with plenty of fresh straw. Their coop is waist high off the ground so they cant scratch in dirt or grass so I give them some fresh hay to substitute. Diane

Some will live 6 or more years.  A fair fraction only make it to 3 years.  Lucky Ducky hatched in the spring of 2007 so she is 12 now.

Hi Diane,

I started my first year with 10 chicks. One was a roo. That was 9 years ago, and I just lost that last of those girls last year. I periodically get a few new babies and add them to the group. My now oldest girl is going to be 9 next year, and she still *occasionally* lays an egg.

I have had a few die before their time, but my two Red Stars, who are young, are both doing well. My worst luck has been with Buff Orps, believe it or not. And some of mine lay sporadically through the winter. Enough to keep me in eggs, but not really enough to sell.

Dana
