I actually didn't change the files from .jpeg, just put them in order
in two separate files so I could upload them to the discussion board
en bloc. Both the Word and .pdf files are just a succession of
inserted "photos" so I could put them in order and keep them together
in that order. That's why they're such huge files. Unless your
scanner has an optical character recognition (OCR) program, you're
stuck with .jpegs and, truthfully, the OCRs I've dealt with have been
more trouble than they're worth. And, we needed photos in this
instance to show the actual documents so .jpeg was the way to go.
