Hi again Tracy,

Well, Fritz and Frazier, our two older ones were no problem at all. For us and
for all of our friends that have doxies, having two seems to be easier than just
one. Ours are minis too. We got Fritz first and then we got Frazier 6 months
later, while Fritz was still a puppy. It's like Fritz taught Frazier and we
never had any problems. Well, now we have Franklin and Franklin is a Silver
Dapple, which sounds like yours may be too. Franklin has been kind of hard to
potty train. We tried to be really consistent and take him out, it's just that
he's kind of a wierd dog. He actually peed on my husband while he was sitting
there watching tv (my dog was watching tv, not my husband). He poops right as
you step out of the front door, where our others go in the flower beds. He
still poops and occassionally pees inside and it drives me crazy. Also,
Franklin will be one in February. When we talked with our vet about it, he
suggested we let the older ones try to teach him, that is,
send them all out together, so that's what we've been doing and it seems to be
working lately (fingers crossed). I'm not sure how yours will be, but mine hate
to be cold, so if the grass is wet, if it's raining or really cold, they don't
want to go out. Just try to be consistent and the best advice is take him out
every twenty minutes to half hour at first whether he has to go our not. Make
sure you say your "training word", like "peepee" or "potty" or "tinkle", because
I swear, my dogs know the word. Say it EVERYTIME you take him out. You should
be fine.

I can't wait to hear all about him when you have time. It makes me sad to know
he was at the shelter. Never in a million years could I ever think of taking
mine to a shelter or letting them stay there any longer than need be. He is
lucky to have you. Good luck.

My main concern because of my lack of experience is how I will potty train

consistent with what you are doing, I.E, wake up... potty... feed... potty,
etc.

Were your doxies hard to potty train? If so any tips?

Tracy :)

Hi Tracy,

How sweet that you adopted your new little one from the Humane Society.

You are just going to fall in love with your buddy. I was never a "daschund
person" and I used to make fun of my husband for liking the breed and then we
got two "doxies". I love them. I will never have any other kind of dog. . .
EVER!!! They are very smart and lovable. They can be territorial. They have
no idea of their size (at least mine don't). They love to be warm. They burrow
in blankets, ours sleep with us. I would suggest if you keep him outside while
your gone to keep some blankets in his pen or doghouse. Our doxies are actually
slim and trim, but I know many that are very fat. They all tend to be over
eaters. We were told by our breeder to let them self-feed and they will
regulate themselves, so that is what we did from the beginning. Their bowl is
never empty and we are always stopped by people when we walk them (which isn't
that often) and asked how we keep ours so trim. Another thing I've found out
that is similar in all three of ours (oh, I forgot to
mention, we bred one of ours and kept the puppy, so now we have three), is that
when they are sleepy or right before going to bed, they will either lick a spot
on the sheets or on like my calf and it's the same ritual every night before we
go to sleep. Does that happen to anybody else?

Well, Tracy, I've gone on and on. Good luck with your little friend. Post and
tell us how you like him.

Take care,

Kat

Just wanted to say I think it is great that there is a club to
discuss these wonderful little animals. We have a long haired wonder
named Annie, she is 7 months old and was the runt of the litter. My
daughter also bought one of Annie's litter mates and Sadie is
already almost twice the size of Annie. She is the best thing that
has happened to us. Very loving and a little cuddler. Fighting
fleas at the momnent and we have tried everything even Frontline.
Any suggestions for a natural way to get rid of them? Short of
picking them off.

Hi Jo,

Welcome. Well it sounds like Oscar has a wonderful home and life with you now.
That's nice.

About his aggression . . . I have one daschund (Fritz) who does the very same
thing. Once he gets past the sniffing (if allowed by the other owner), then
he's okay and he calms down. It's like I have to let him do his thing to get
him past the initial aggressive acts (pulling at leash, stripe down the back,
barking incessantly). I have found that daschunds (in my opinion) are such a
social animal that they need "buddy" contact. I have lots of friends who also
have doxies and we all agree they are better when they have another dog living
partner. I'm not sure if that's a possibility for you. If not, a little puppy
playgroup would work where Oscar can always count on a time when he's able to
socialize with other dogs. I happen to have three daschunds and they have so
much fun together. Fritz (although older) loves to play, sleep and investigate
with his other two friends and it has seemed to calm the aggression down a bit.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing more about Oscar.

I am a firm believer that daschunds prefer company. We bought our black and tan
(Fritz) 7 (or is it 8?) years ago and had him as an only child only for a couple
of months. We ended up buying his brother (Frazier) from a different litter.
They are inseparable. We actually used to drop Fritz off at my mom's everyday,
just like daycare, so that he could play with her Chiuahua (sorry, spelled
wrong). Once we got Frazier (a beautiful red), we didn't have that guilty
feeling of leaving him. They remind us of an old married couple now. Every
once in a while, they get on each other's nerves, but they truly love each
other. They have very different personalities. My husband and I now know that
we will never only have just one doxie, EVER. In February, our third daschund,
Franklin was born (he is sired by Frazier). He is a royal pain in the butt and
is going through that puppy stage and driving all of us crazy. It's sweet
though because Frazier doesn't want him out of his sight.
He gets worried, if he's sleeping in another room and goes back and forth,
until we bring him with all of us. It's just the cutest thing. So as you can
see, we have 3 wonderful daschunds and a house full of love. I think your best
bet would be to get another dog, preferably another doxie. It's like they
understand each other. I'm sure at first Lucy might be annoyed, but in the long
run, she will be very happy.

Hope I helped.

Hi Kat,

Thanks for responding to my posting. Considering the amount of postings over the
past few years, it really doesn't seem like anyone is committed to this club. I
left a posting a few minutes ago, please read it if you have time. Let me know
if you have any suggestions. I would be most grateful for your feedback. By the
way, I would love to see pictures of your babies if you have some. I will be
posting some of Lucy soon. Thanks again!

Hi Josh,
Just wanted to say that I think it's wonderful that you have started a
daschund club. My black and tan female with celebrate her 4th birthday on July
3, 2004. She can be so difficult to understand sometimes, and I can't wait to
discuss her personality with others. Thanks again, and I look forward to hearing
from you and other members soon.

HI CHRISTY, I AM NO EXPERT BUT I HAVE HAD DOGS FOR YEARS AND BRED
GREAT DANES. I CURRENTLY HAVE 9 DOGS, 3 OF WHICH ARE MINI WEENIES,
AND 1 THAT IS A BASSETT. TO MAKE YOU FEEL A LITTLE HOPEFUL THE
BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT YOU ARE DEALING WITH A HOUND. THEY ARE THE
MOST DIFFICULT DOG TO HOUSEBREAK. IT TOOK ALMOST A YEAR TO
HOUSEBREAK THE BASSETT AND THE WEENIES AREN'T EASY. MY MOMMA DOG IS
15 MONTHS OLD AND HAS BEEN 90% HOUSEBROKEN FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS. THIS
IS WHAT I HAVE FOUND AS A SUCCESSFUL WAY TO HOUSEBREAK. CRATE THEM IN
A CAGE THAT IS SMALL ENOUGH THAT THEY CAN TURN AROUND AND NOTHING
ELSE. AS LONG AS THEY CAN SAFELY AND COMFORTABLY TURN AROUND AND
STAND UP THAT IS ALL THAT IS NEEDED. ANOTHER THING THAT HELPS AND
YOU MAY BE DOING IT ALREADY BUT DO NOT FREE FEED. SET SCHEDULED
TIMES TO EAT PUT THE BOWL DOWN AND GIVE THEM 30 MINUTES TO EAT. IF
THEY DON'T EAT WHEN YOU OFFER IT PUT IT UP THEY WILL SOON LEARN TOO.
IF THEY EAT ON A SCHEDULE YOU WILL KNOW WHEN THEY WILL GO TO THE
BATHROOM. ANOTHER THING DON'T LET YOUR DOG SEE YOU CLEAN UP THE
ACCIDENTS AND WHEN THERE IS ONE DON'T PUNISH THEM... JUST HAVE
A "POOPY PARTY" AND MAKE A BIG DEAL WHEN THE DOG GETS IT RIGHT.
SPECIAL TREATS GIVEN JUST FOR POTTYING OUTSIDE WORKS WELL LIKE CUT UP
HOT DOGS. AND AS FOR THEM HOLDING IT MY VET GAVE ME A SCALE TO GO BY
IF THE PUPPY IS 2 MONTHS OLD THEY CAN HOLD IT FOR 3 HOURS, A 3 MONTH
OLD CAN HOLD IT FOR 4 HOURS AND SO ON. WHAT ARE YOU CLEANING THE
CARPET WITH? NATURES MIRACLE WORKS REALLY WELL AND CAN BE PURCHASED
AT PET STORES OR A PRODUCT CALLED OUT FROM WALMART IS ALSO GOOD. I
HOPE SOME OF THIS HELPS YOU. US WEENIE DOG PEOPLE GOT STICK
TOGETHER...THEY ARE GREAT BUT SOMETIMES YOU NEED A SUPPORT GROUP! LOL

Thank you Willie..
I catch him early morning. Try to bring him out once every two hours. Sometimes
he is outside playing and I see him do his business... then he comes in and
poops again right in front of my puter chair! I have scrubbed the whole area
each time... its making me nuts. I hate the thought of kenneling too... any
advise appreciated. Will try all.

We just a minny daschund last week he is now 8 weeks old have
started working with him some. My friend was over the other day to
see our puppy and she is a breeder of Shelties and she told me the
best way to housebreak them is to put them in the kennel while we
are working because they will not go potty where they sleep. I'm
not sure if I want to leave our little guy in the kennel while we
are at work. I have been taking him outside after he wakes up from
his naps and that helps I think. Good luck.

Willie

We just got a 71/2 week old min. daschund he is a silver dapple and
so cute. We took him to the Petsmart to get the things we needed
plus to get his toenails clipped and the gal at the clinc didn't
want to let him go. It will be an interesting household as the
puppy is joining two sun conures that think they rule the house.

Three weeks ago, I moved into a new home with my eight-year-old
Longhaired, mail doxie. He hates it. He shakes. He is eating, but
only with coaching. He stays in his crate all day -- only coming out
when I take him outside or to get water or food. He doesn't even
sleep in his bed in my bedroom anymore.

I've gone from carpet to ceramic tile, the house is freshly painted.
None of the old odors, but the same furniture. I took him back to our
old park today and he was one happy dog, but when we came home, he
headed for the security of the crate.

Any suggestions?
