MADISON — It's an otherwise normal afternoon on a quiet north Madison street: Children play in yards, dogs bark, a few cars drive down the house-lined streets.

You might not notice anything is amiss, if you didn't look up.

But 35 vultures sat perched in the trees Thursday in the area around the Metz family's Winding Road home, and the Amplos' house behind it, on Wheatstone Road.

“That's nothing,” Rachel Metz said.

Linda Amplo said she counted 75 of the large birds around her home one day this week; seven of them were on her house.

There's something ominous about the birds, she said.

“I feel like the Addams Family,” she said. “I kept thinking that they found a deer and they'd (eventually) leave. But this has gone on for three weeks and if anything, they are getting stronger in number.”

State Department of Environmental Protection officials say the birds are harmless, that they feed only on dead animals, but Amplo's son, Christian, 12, held his small shih tzu a little tighter when the birds began to circle above his driveway Thursday.

Amplo, who said she is a wildlife enthusiast who would never want to hurt an animal, has started carrying a baseball bat when she walks her dog in the morning, in case she encounters an aggressive vulture.

There are also wafts of a pungent odor, and portions of the woods and roadway coated in the birds' white feces.

Metz said while that is annoying, the fact that these birds land in her yard, in close proximity to her small children, cat, and small dog, is downright scary.

So, Metz called the state DEP, Madison police and animal control, as well as the town's Audubon Shop.

“Everyone's scratching their heads. They don't know why (the birds) are doing this, but no one can offer any help,” Metz said.

Worse, she said, is that the birds are protected, so her idea of tossing stones at them to scare them away is prohibited by law.

Julie Victoria, a wildlife biologist at DEP, said the birds are protected under the Migratory Birds Treaty, and people are not permitted to “harass or harm” th...

Someone is shooting the region's birds of prey.

Wildlife refuges serving Westmoreland and Fayette counties report an alarming spike in the number of hawks and other raptors wounded since the beginning of 2009. Most of the birds have subsequently died.

"These are protected birds," said Beth Shoaf, director of Wildlife Works in Youngwood. "It's extremely distressing."

"I think it's malicious," said Gretchen Weslager of Windy Ridge Wildlife Refuge of Acme. "A bird doesn't look like a fawn or a deer. It's hard to confuse the two."

Birds of prey are protected by state and federal laws, said Tom Fazi of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Southwest Region.

The maximum fine for killing or injuring a red-tailed hawk, for example, is $200. The penalty for killing a protected bird such as an eagle is steeper, Fazi said.

Since January, the two wildlife refuges report that 18 wounded birds have been brought to their doors for treatment, but only 4 survived. In a typical year, there are two at most, Weslager and Shoaf said.

Shoaf reached her breaking point when a red-tailed hawk that she had rehabilitated for seven months for malnutrition was returned Nov. 14 with a gunshot wound next to its left wing.

"Fuzzy" was discovered in a yard on Radebaugh Road in Hempfield, Shoaf said.

The bird had been returned to the wild in September. Shoaf said when she received a call about a bird on the ground in Hempfield, her heart sank. The Radebaugh Road area is where Fuzzy had been released.

Fuzzy's future is uncertain. The bird may need more surgery, followed by months of rehabilitation. It may not be able to fly again. In that event, it likely will be destroyed, Shoaf said.

A hawk without wings is a hawk in name only, she said.

Weslager and Shoaf said the red-tailed hawk apparently is the target of choice for whoever is doing the shooting. More of these birds have been wounded than any other type. No eagles are known to have been injured.

Shoaf was at a loss to explain the situation. She said it is "inconceivable" that anyone would be...

ESCANABA -- Employees at Jim's Music in Escanaba got a surprise visitor Thursday morning.

A white, snowy owl was found in an alley space between Jim's Music and another business.

DNR officials say because it has black feathers as well as white, it is a male.

They say it probably migrated down from the Arctic, and it'll probably stick around here through the winter months.

You can watch the attached video to take a good look at this unique bird.

SUNRISE, Fla. (WSVN) -- Students at a South Florida school are giving a new home to a family owls who have invaded their school football field.

Students at Piper High in Sunrise took matters into their own hands Thursday morning by giving a pair of burrowing owls a place to call home. "I thought it was awesome that the school wanted to get involved in something like this instead of just moving them off the premises," said student Josh Koenig.

We first met Stan and Gladys a few weeks ago, when news broke that the pair had decided to make the high school's football field their new "love nest."

The owls are listed as a species of special concern, so the school football team are not able to use the field to play or practice.

An avian advocacy group called Project Perch came into action and decided to help the school out. "We provide the supplies, and the kids do all the work, and it's like a real life hoot. It's like these guys trying to save the owls," said Kelly Heffernan.

Students installed an artificial burrow made with a six-foot long PVC pipe on the side of the field's track. "That's the goal of the artificial burrow, to provide them a safe burrow that's already started for them. If it's in tough fill or hard soil, we make it a little bit longer. We try and dig out the end of it. It just makes their job a little bit easier and gives them safety right from the start," said Heffernan.

Student Tiffany Lachhonna is excited to be able to have hands-on experience with these types of birds. "I think this is a very big deal for our school because we've never had something this wonderful happen, and it's a great opportunity to help out our environment," she said.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, you'd think turkeys would be lying low.

But in recent weeks, some wild gobblers in Lancaster County and Jersey City have brazenly stopped traffic, perched on a roof, even hopped on cars at a tollbooth.

Are they trying to make nice with humans at this critical time of year? Pretending to be pets? Looking to be fed rather than fed on?

Actually, turkeys are a lot like deer, but with two legs, wings, feathers, and a beak. What the wildlife have in common is that their populations are growing in residential areas.

"Turkeys roam these woods 365 days a year," said Julio Santiago, former vice president of the New Jersey chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. "They don't care what holiday it is."

Problems arise when people start feeding them.

"If you see a wild turkey in your front yard and give him bread, guess what? He's your friend," Santiago said.

Last week in Mountville, Lancaster County, two turkeys tried to buddy up to customers and employees at B&J Automotive.

They sat on the building roof and watched traffic on busy Route 462, tailgated on the back of a truck, and wandered into the middle of the street.

"People blow their horns and flash lights, and the [turkeys]
He said the birds show up every year about this time. They're getting pushed out of the woods by more and more housing developments.

Another bird, dubbed "Tammy" by New Jersey Turnpike toll collectors, had been hanging around the tollbooths at the 14B interchange in Jersey City and freaking out motorists by running in front of their vehicles. It even jumped on tollbooth employees' parked cars. Staff from the state Division of Fish and Wildlife caught Tammy on Wednesday after the bird had eluded authorities the weekend before.

Turnpike spokesman Joe Orlando said Tammy was taken to the Popcorn Zoo in Lacey Township, Ocean County. It's a no-kill facility.

"Now they've got a national celebrity animal," Orlando said. After media attention grew, the curio...]]>

The best chance each year to see a golden eagle in Pennsylvania is right about now, according to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary on the Schuylkill-Berks county line near Kempton.

The big raptors are now migrating south through the state from breeding grounds in northern Canada.

According to the sanctuary's period e-alert for this week, the most golden eagles ever counted in one day from the lookouts along the Kittatinny Ridge came on Nov. 20, 2003, when 31 were recorded. That was more than double the sanctuary's typical one-day high each year, which comes in around 15.

The largest season total was 164, recorded at the sanctuary in 1998.

She's been out that way a couple of times, but she's back at Lennox as of yesterday.

Makes you wonder what lures her west (probably a flock of birds) and what lures her back to where she started. Not quite as dramatic as her trip from Cape Cod to New Jersey and back last year, but a similar pattern. Interesting since she doesn't have a firmly established "territory" quite yet.
