I remember watching that wall come down like it was yesterday. I sat in our living room (at the Lake) crying my eyes out. Tears of great joy because WWII was finally over - tears of sadness because my mother had died 2.5 weeks earlier and didn't live to see that wall come down. FYI - if my grandparents hadn't taken the boat with 2 little kids and one infant to Newark, NJ - we would have been living in East Germany very near Poland. They sailed in 1905 on the Potsdam from Rotterdam, and their last residence is listed as Podembietz. Podembietz is apparently one of those towns that was leveled in either WWI, WWII by the Germans, or in the Cold War by the Soviets. Don't know if it is still there, but there is a chunk of the wall on the Intrepid in NYC.

The chicks have now been named. From the site:

We are proud to announce Alcoa Anglesea's three chicks for 2009: Froona, Barega and Warrun.

Thank you to everyone who emailed us with their expert opinions. The general consensus was that we have one female and two male chicks, with the brothers exhibiting more developed juvenile plumage compared to their big fluffy sister.

It is an honour that our female chick is named Froona. We had an overwhelming response from members of Bird Cams Around the World to recognise Froona Veldhuis from the Netherlands, a devoted advocate for the Peregrine Falcon, who died unexpectedly in April this year.

Our two boys have been named Barega and Warrun. Both names are from the Aboriginal language meaning 'the wind' and 'the sky' respectively. It is fitting that these two brothers, indistinguishable from each other without bands, have names from similar origins. Thank you to Linda (USA) and Ingrid (Netherlands) who suggested these names for our two boys.

How is Anne? Did she fix her PC problem yet? It's been a while now and was just wondering. Hope all is well with her and her dad. Send her my best.

I have a question for those who haven't gone to the forum yet. When you guys view the forum as a guest, can you see the pics that are posted? My sister is a guest over there and she said she can't view any of the pictures. I'm just checking because I don't want any of you who didn't register, to miss anything. This board has been quiet...real quiet...are you all ok? I don't post here now only because everything from there comes here. I don't want to double up on posts. There's 388 members on the forum now out of  1500 that were here. I miss all you guys here and if someone wants to chat about something....LETS. Not much is happening right now...Beauty as of last week is still around...no Mariah or Archer sightings...I'm sure Mariah is still around but being scarce. We think Archer migrated. Quest is in Ontario just hanging out catching pigeons. Maybe she'll move in closer as Rochester is not far from where she is now. Who knows if  Beauty will stay the Winter but sure hope Mariah does. I'm still praying Kaver comes back...I'm in denial when it comes to him. Anything can happen. Ok, just checking in and maybe we can get something going on this board also. Take care all and miss the fun we had here.

Now that the Oceanfront peregrine falcon is back for the winter and roosting on its favorite "rocky ledges" at the Virginia House, pigeons are scarce.

"We never see a pigeon when she's around" said Virginia House manager Cassie Gronda.

After a pigeon dinner, the female peregrine leaves the remains behind, but Gronda said she would take that mess any day over the pigeons themselves.

That's because the peregrine not only acts as pigeon control, but also is a celebrity, providing entertainment for Virginia House residents and bird lovers all winter long.

"We all look forward to her coming back," Gronda said, "and hanging out with us."

Back again for an amazing 15th year, the falcon often can be found perched on Virginia House at 38th Street and Atlantic Avenue or perhaps on The Cavalier Hotel at 42nd Street and Atlantic Avenue or the Oceanside Holiday Inn at 21st Street and Atlantic Avenue, among other places.

When it's cold, the bird often will roost on the hotels' neon signs that provide warmth.

When not perched on her favorite buildings, you might be lucky enough to see the falcon as she rockets through the sky with pointed streamlined wings

Peregrines, the fastest animal on Earth, can fly up to 200 mph when dive-bombing a pigeon on the wing. They can fly leisurely up to 60 mph.

Oceanfront residents aren't the only folks in town who have the opportunity to get to know a falcon these days. This is the fourth year for a peregrine falcon to winter at Town Center. Her hangouts are on the Armada Hoffler building, either on the sign or on the tower or on one of the upper-story porches at the Westin Virginia Beach Town Center, said local raptor expert Reese Lukei.

Lukei and fellow raptor enthusiast Shawn Padgett have been keeping tabs on the falcons' comings and goings since each bird arrived for the first time years ago.

Lukei knows they are both females, but the birds are not banded so he has no idea where they nest in summer. They usually arrive here in October and ...

.was pretty significant. I watched a 2 hour special yesterday on the Berlin Wall. I can't imagine living in East Germany at that time. One of the most spectacular heights of human stupidity, amongst our many. What a joy it must have been to see it come down 20 years ago.

There's quite a few youtubes on the topic:

This is a 5 part tube:

The group photo was taken before we entered. Others arrived after we went inside. It was good to see everyone! It was overpriced (IMHO), but it was certainly worth it to see everyone again!

Hey Nan - there is a deaf family up on the West River (Parents teach at Gaulledet in DC). The 2 girls have a "celebration" pigeon business, where the dye the birds (temp colors), release them at the event, and the birds come home. Ok, some hit the eventually come home mark. I wonder if this guy is a "celebration" pigeon?

It certainly looks like Quest is settling in near Kingston, Ontario. With the exception of a quick visit to Olcott, New York on the 30th of October, she's been pretty consistent in her movements north of Lake Ontario. So it seems, for the most part, Quest will be a guest of our friends...

Where did they arrive from? I know they weren't in Miami Beach, cool-045 so do they migrate from different parts of Antartica?

Migration and Vagrancy:
Little is known about post-breeding dispersal or migration. Adults stay close to the permanent ice for most of their lives. Juveniles equipped with satellite transmitters, however, migrated as far north as the polar front. Vagrants have turned up on the South Shetland Islands, Tierra del Fuego, the Falklands, South Sandwich Islands, Kerguelen Island, Heard Island, and New Zealand.
