Before the Belgian Malinois became a breed, it's "job" was as a herding dog for the farmers of Belgium, along with the other Belgian Shepherds. About the time the breed was being developed, herding was fading from the Belgian countryside and the working ability of the Malinois was transferred to other activities . In recent years there has been an upsurge around the world for dogs to be trained and compete in their original occupations.
