Took a look at the circumstance yesterday. Honeybees in an old locust tree...
will attempt a trap-out Cleo hogan style, and placed a swarm-trap nearby just to
be safe. colony thought to be around 2 years old... but not the first colony to
occupy this tree. Will keep everyone posted... Jacob

Put out a swarm trap last night... single deep with a vial of nasanov.  Asked the neighbor to watch it for me (on his property)... and doesn't he call me at 12 O'clock today to say a swarm is moving in?!?  Got there in time to watch them settling in... not sure the size, but doesn't look like an afterswarm from my hive that swarmed on Monday... bees look very different (dark bees... my hive has the large yellow-bodied bees almost the size of yellowjackets.) Can't believe it's already started... this is in the city of Syracuse!

Hi,

I'm presently in the new beekeepers class and was talking to someone who
was in the class a few years ago, she said the last class was at Bill's
farm? Will the May class be at Bill's?

Also years ago, she got her nucs from Bill and when she got hers she had
to povide Bill with the nuc boxes. We ordered two nucs from Bill but he
didn't say anything about providing the nuc boxes?

The meeting at Bill's farm is in June, the second Tuesday starting at 6pm to take advantage of the day light.

I don't know what Bill is doing about the nuc boxes this year, someone else will have to pass that information on to you.  Or you could call him and ask.

Have a great day.

Hello Donna,

Like Linda said, the club hold its regular June meeting at Bill's bee yard.
Directions will be coming from the clubs secretary, Conrad Sigona. It's a great
opportunity for folks to see what the hives look like.

As far as nucs, you provide Bill with your 10 frame hive, complete with frames
and foundation. He will install 5 frames of bees, pollen, honey, along with a
laying queen in exchange for 5 of your frames. You can bring your hive any time
now. He'll tell you when to pick them up.

Hope this helps,
Steve

Thanks Steve, I guess Bill forgot to tell us that minor detail about bringing him a hive! lol

No problem, we'll get it up to him just as soon as we get it (order hasn't arrived yet!).

Thanks again,

Got a call from a property owner up near Pulaski who has a maple occupied by
bees for a couple years, that the colony died out this winter in. Well he called
at lunch today to say that the bees are back... he saw the swarm enter the tree
earlier this morning. Oh well... get your boxes out there!

Very carefully............just kidding.

Put a ratchet strap around the hive, in case you drop it, so bees aren't
spilling out...ask me how I know. If you have screened bottom boards. Remove the
grid panel so they have good ventilation. Install your entrance reducer if you
have one. Cover the hole/entrance with duct tape. Put them in your car. (You
won't be the first beekeeper to drive all the way home with a veil on if you
feel more secure!)Once positioned at home just remove the duct tape. Keep the
entrance reducer in (largest opening) for a few days so the bees have an easier
time defending the entrance.

If you don't have a screened bottom board, staple window screen over the
entrance and duct tape down the edges so bees can't sneak out between the
staples. Once home and positioned, remove the screen and reduce the entrance a
bit for a few days.

Hi everyone,
This is Tim Abraham. I'm in the new beekeeper class. I just wanted to share a
message with all those that presently or in the past can feel my excitement,
nervousness, unsuredness, and all those other feelings I'm having right about
now. With the help of Tim Pylman (thanks Tim) I ordered my first nuc of bees
through Ken Stone, who lives just south of Oriskany Falls. Anyway, I got the
call from Tim two days ago that "the bees are in." I thought to myself...here we
go. Up til now it's been all talk and learning from afar (class, internet,
written material, conversation). I've bought all the stuff I was counseled to
buy to get started but never had the bees. Well, that's all changed now.
I picked up my nuc this morning at about 7:30am and feel somewhat like I got to
take the easy way out. It's a beautiful sunny morning but cold. For all the
concern about getting stung, protecting myself, etc., all I had to do was walk
up to the nuc, throw a little tape over the entrance hole and a bungee cord
around the nuc to secure the lid, pick it up, put it in the car, and drive home.
The bees barely came to the hole to see what was going on. I didn't need to but
I left the windows cracked open on the ride home...I just had visions of me
duplicating Joe's story about picking up his first nuc that was wet and having
bees crawling across the ceiling of the car then dropping in his lap.
Thankfully, I didn't have anything like that happen.
Maybe I'm overthinking it but I decided to leave the bees in the nuc for now
because we're barely supposed to crack 50 degrees today and are supposed to have
another hard freeze tonight. I figure they'll have an easier time keeping warm
in their cozy five frame home than try to stay warm in an 'unfurnished' house
twice that size for now. I'm gonna take Tim's advice and I just put the nuc
right where the hive will be (I took away the hive body, put the outer cover on
top of the bottom board so the bottom board doesn't get wet then placed the nuc
on top of them both) and plan to replace the nuc with the actual hive body when
the weather warms up a little more...maybe tomorrow afternoon. After that,
we're off to the races.
If anyone has any feedback, I'm all ears. I'm sure now that I am truly a
beekeeper, I'll be posting fairly regularly to ask questions, etc. I also forgot
to mention that I made my own little business cards (Abes' Apiary) and handed
them to the Kirkland Town Highway Superintendant and the Kirkland Police Chief
in case they get any swarm calls. I have equipment to take 2-3 more colonies
and if I get maxed out, I'll be looking for anyone that would want more for
their apiary. Maybe I'm be overly optimistic but I would rather be able to put
the bees somewhere than have to turn away the opportunity if the town calls.
I hope everyone has a great weekend. Enjoy the sunshine.

Tim.

My wooden ware is complete and painted. My deeps are wired and foundation installed.  I am all set for my bees but I have over a month before they will be available.  Here is my question...If I was to install frames and put my hives in place, possibly with a little lemon grass oil, what are the chances that a colony might move in?  Where I live is about 2 miles from some of biggest apple orchards in the area here in Lafayette. Is it worth trying while I am waiting to get my nucs?

For all the concern about getting stung, protecting myself, etc., all I had to do was walk up to the nuc, throw a little tape over the entrance hole and a bungee cord around the nuc to secure the lid, pick it up, put it in the car, and drive home.  The bees barely came to the hole to see what was going on.  I didn't need to but I left the windows cracked open on the ride home...I just had visions of me duplicating Joe's story about picking up his first nuc that was wet and having bees crawling across the ceiling of the car then dropping in his lap.  Thankfully, I didn't have anything like that happen.
Maybe I'm overthinking it but I decided to leave the bees in the nuc for now because we're barely supposed to crack 50 degrees today and are supposed to have another hard freeze tonight.  I figure they'll have an easier time keeping warm in their cozy five frame home than try to stay warm in an 'unfurnished' house twice that size for now.  I'm gonna take Tim's advice and I just put the nuc right where the hive will be (I took away the hive body, put the outer cover on top of the bottom board so the bottom board doesn't get wet then placed the nuc on top of them both) and plan to replace the nuc with the actual hive body when the weather warms up a little more...maybe tomorrow afternoon.  After that, we're off to the races.
If anyone has any feedback, I'm all ears.  I'm sure now that I am truly a beekeeper, I'll be posting fairly regularly to ask questions, etc. I also forgot to mention that I made my own little business cards (Abes' Apiary) and handed them to the Kirkland Town Highway Superintendant and the Kirkland Police Chief in case they get any swarm calls.  I have equipment to take 2-3 more colonies and if I get maxed out, I'll be looking for anyone that would want more for their apiary.  Maybe I'm be overly optimistic but I would rather be able to put the bees somewhere than have to turn away the opportunity if the town calls.
I hope everyone has a great weekend.  Enjoy the sunshine.

Tim.

tim:

i had a similar expeirence with my first hive. i was going to the class reading
the books helping my uncle with his bees. it wasnt until i brought that first
hive home and pulled out the little grass cork pluging the entrence and watched
2 or 3 bees walk out behind it that i suddenly realized "i have no idea what to
do!" but hang in there soon you will be handling bees like a pro.
as for leaveing them in the nuc i would agree. you might even want to go longer
than tomorrow judgeing by the forcast. just peek inside to make sure they are
not over crowded.
good luck

hi ray:
as long as you will still have hives for the bees you have on order it might be
worth putting out your extra hives as bait boxes. remember not to use to much
lemmon grass oil, a little goes a long way. if you use frames with foundation
check in them once and a while for wax moths.
good luck

Hi Tim!

It would be perfectly OK to keep your hive body in place on its stand
with top
cover in place. Place your nuc on top of the outer cover, open, to
allow the
bees to come and go as they choose, subject to weather. On a more clement
day, you can make the transfer to the 10 frame hive, and the bees will
already
be oriented to that site. - Good luck!

Oh, thank you both!
Saw a few honeybees in my yard today, drinking water from the birdbath.  Saw one last week.  Nobody lives very close around, so was wondering if maybe they were wild and would like a better home.

There were only 3, bees don't come in threes, there must be a batch of them around someplace.

Hi everyone,
John Ferguson made a good suggestions that I leave my phone number and location.
I live in the village of Clinton and my cell no. is 315-794-5613...you'll
probably get a quicker response if you text me vs. leaving a message though.
I'm always happy to converse via the group too...I figure my lessons learned and
questions can/will help other folks in a similar situation.

Thanks for the suggestion John.

Good night,
Tim.

timabraham...

Hi,
I'm looking for feedback on a new subject. I need to paint a few 'naked' outer
covers, bottom boards, and medium supers I recently made. Looking through my
collection of paint cans in the basement, I've come up with three possibilities:
lighter purple, a little darker than sky blue, and mango-ish yellow exterior
latex paints (ask my wife about those selections). I know I could just go to
the store and buy white exterior paint but I'd rather use what I have...if I
can. Any suggestions as to whether I should or shouldn't use any of these
colors?

Thanks,
Tim.

I was in last spring's class and understand that my class fee covered my annual
dues too. BUT, I know I owe dues for 2012...but am unsure of how much; when
dues are due; and who to pay.

Also, I was with Bill Crowell today, "dropping off" my (2) deeps for the two
nucs that I am buying...and ending up spending a very enjoyable few hours with
him and his son...I was asked to suit up and I actually started moving frames
full of bees, brood, etc....from the nucs and into my own boxes, MYSELF. Wow,
what a thrill. you can learn so much more, getting your hands dirty, under the
guidance of some real experts. Thanks to Bill and Will for taking time to make
my day!

One more question...Bill mentioned that we may be able to get a subscription
break to Bee Culture and/or Bee Journal, because of our club membership? If so,
how do I get it?

Thanks,

Keith Joslin

Hi Keith,

Dues for the club are $5 a year and are probably due a year after you paid your first year.  Mike Martino is the Treasurer and he will take your money at any of the meetings.

You can talk with Conrad, the secretary of Mid York, about the subscription issue.
