The toy drive was a big success. We would like to THANK everyone
who participated and sent toys to help make a monkeys Christmas
dreams come true. Enough toys were received that every monkey
was able to receive their own toy. Monkeys are very hard on
their toys, so toys are always needed. Linda carefully selected
the toys that she knew each of the monkeys would enjoy the most.
We would like to share some of the highlights with you.
Through the toy drive, the monkeys have also made some new
friends. In fact, Rowdy was even lucky enough to find someone
to sponsor him.
Each and every monkey received a pail filled with peanuts, a
piece of fruit and a shovel so that when the goodies were gone
they could spend countless hours filling their pails with the
mulch from the floors of the enclosure.
Since Grandma is not really into toys, she received a special
gift of one of her favorite snacks, Graham Crackers. Of course,
since Katy Jo and Grandma spend their lives together, she will
also be enjoying them.
Each monkey has their own preferences as to what they like
to play with. Something so simple can give a monkey countless
hours of pleasure. For instance, Cookie received a plastic
serving spoon that she can amuse herself with by carrying
spoonfuls of snow into her house. The capuchins love playing
with baby rattles. Enough rattles were received for all who
enjoy them to receive one. For Magan, anything that makes
noise makes her happy. The louder the better.
Linus, a Rhesus Macaque, did not want any of his cagemates to
share in his fun with an xylophone. He grabbed it and ran into
his house, thinking no one would see him playing with it. This
did not work, as soon as everyone heard it, in they ran. He
quickly came out pulling it behind him.
Ginger, a Rhesus Macaque spent many hours playing with a toy
telephone. She did not stop until the batteries wore down.
Garner and Pumpkin, both Java Macaques, spent their time
sharing a cash register. When they pushed the keys the cash
drawer would open, revealing plastic balls with bells in them.
Meja the Marmoset now has a bird cage mirror hanging in
her enclosure. Being the smallest monkey at Mindy's this
is the perfect size for her.
Magan, Alex, Maxine, Sybill, Bobby Mann and JJ love their
new Busy Walker with attached toys. This is kept inside of
their house. They love taking turns bouncing up and down
in the seat. Also being enjoyed by this troop is a basketball
tug toy. This is basketball with straps crisscrossing over
it, where two or more monkeys can tug on it.
Linda has yet to find a toy that Indigo will even touch.
He had probably never seen a toy before. However, since he
loves to eat, he did get to enjoy his pail. Maybe one day
he will enjoy playing just like the rest of the monkeys.
With some monkeys it just takes a lot longer.
Sunshine, the Baby Barbary is enjoying her new toddler
swing. She never seems to run out of energy. Some of the
macaques that share her enclosure are too big for the
swing. So far anyone else who would fit does not appear
to be interested in it. That could change at some point.
Missybelle received a toy mirror. One of her favorite
past times is admiring herself. Linus is not the only
musician at the sanctuary, Missy is enjoying a tambourine.
Phoebus, Missy's cagemate, is spending his time playing
with a truck. Both received rattles.
Quite a few Kong Toys were received. These make wonderful
enrichment items. They were filled with honey, ground nuts
and raisins. These were placed in various enclosures for
all to enjoy.
The monkeys were even lucky enough to receive some quilts
to keep them nice and warm. They arrived just in time for
some really cold weather. Many of the residents have now
seen snow and ice for the first time in their lives.
Now every morning, when the monkeys wake up, they run
outside as quickly as they can to see what Santa has
left them. Wonder how long they will do this for.
WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT THE SANCTUARY???
A very generous donation of 25 pounds of paper shell pecans
were received. Joyful squeals were made by all, especially
the capuchins. They had slight cracks in them, making it
easier for all of the smaller monkeys to finish cracking
them, without any danger of injuring their mouths.
