COME MEET THE MONKEYS, SEE WHAT THEY WERE, WHO
THEY HAVE BECOME AND SEE WHAT THEY ARE UP TO NOW!!!
This issue will introduce you to Muggsy and
Katy Jo
Muggsy, better known as Grandma, is a 40 year old
White Front Capuchin. She is the oldest resident at
Mindy's. Along with Pumpkin, who has since passed
away, Grandma arrived in February 1998, before they
could be used as a greenhouse display. Like many
pet monkeys she was not fed a proper diet. This
resulted in her arriving in very poor condition.
She has responded well to a proper diet and is in
excellent health for her age. Just like us humans,
she shows her age. She is arthritic, has liver spots,
wrinkles and a saggy chin. Due to her age, special
diet and the fact that she needs to be kept extra
warm during the winter months she could not be
placed outside with the younger monkeys. An attempt
had been made with placing another monkey in her
enclosure and it proved to be too stressful for
both, so once again Grandma was alone. After 6 long,
lonely months, along comes Katy Jo, a 4 year old
White Faced Capuchin. It was love at first sight.
Grandma immediately took the much younger Katy Jo
outside so us humans could not change our minds and
take her away. She began grooming Katy Jo and Katy Jo
began to hug her. They can often be seen rolling
around on the ground play wrestling together. It is
our hope that Katy Jo can keep Grandma acting young
for a long time to come. Unlike many of the other
monkeys, Grandma's previous owner does still
contribute to her care.
Katy Jo is a 7 year old White Faced Capuchin who has
been a resident of Mindy's and Grandma's best friend
for 3 years. She was a former pet who was well taken
care of, but as she matured her owner found that she
was too much to handle. Now she spends her days
playing and just enjoying beng a monkey. During
storms, Katy Jo will bark when she is frightened,
as all Capuchins do. Grandma will go over to her
and together they will go inside where they feel
more secure. These two are totally devoted to each
other.
WHAT THEY ARE UP TO NOW!!!
When Linda needs to clean the grounds around
certain monkey enclosures, this needs to be done
before the monkeys awaken, as they like to reach
through the bars and pinch her. As Grandma's
fingers are arthritic, she is not able to get a
good grip. Instead she has to settle for jumping
up and down screaming. On Lorraine's recent visit
when she would approach Grandma and Katy Jo's
enclosure Grandma would slam around her food tray.
The food tray is a metal tray approximately the
size of two large sheet cakes. It is wired on one
side, so it cannot be tossed around, but that
does not stop Grandma from slamming it up and
down, loud enough to rile up the rest of the
monkeys. As soon as you turn and walk away, she
immediately stops. She is still a very strong old
girl and has a good appetite.
Katy Jo is very shrewd. She acts coy when someone
approaches her enclosure. She will put her tail
out, as if she wants to make friends. When you
let your guard down and get close enough, she will
grab hold of you and will not easily let go. She
also likes to throw things at you. Her aim is very
good. Lorraine was hit with an apple wedge and
her husband Joe was also hit with food.
Grandma had a very serious health scare this past
year. We consider ourselves very lucky that she is
a very strong monkey and was able to pull through.
While Grandma was sick, Katy Jo did not leave her
side for very long. Since Grandma's problems were
age related, there was no concern that there would
be a physical effect on Katy Jo, so there was no
reason to separate the two. She would continue to
groom her, or just sit with her. Katy Jo was a very
good nurse and Grandma is just fine.
Grandma does not have any trouble keeping up with
the much younger Katy Jo. They are inseparable, and
watch out for each other. When Grandma walks inside,
Katy Jo is right behind her. They are very lucky to
have each other.
There are many benefits that Katy Jo receives for
sharing her life with a much older monkey. Grandma
receives some special goodies, such as canned
peaches, canned pears and graham crackers. Since
Katy Jo is always at Grandma's side, she also
receives all of these goodies.
The next issue will feature, Detroit, Neeko and
Sunshine.
WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING AT MINDY'S
We would like to thank everyone that has been
shopping through http://www.Igive.com. Mindy's
has now received their first check from them.
This donation, which was made without cost to
anyone is enough to purchase a case of Fuji
Apples, which is the monkeys favorite.
Missybelle's former owner, Lorraine, has set
up a photo album of her November visit to the
sanctuary. To view her album, please visit:

The monkeys have been experiencing a much colder
winter than usual. There have been both snow and
ice storms to deal with. The monkeys have been
spending a lot of time indoors. Hopefully, the
worst is over, as keeping everyone's houses nice
and warm is very expensive.

Mindy's has the largest enclosures of any Primate
Sanctuary, complete with wooden shelves and perches
for the monkeys to sit on and climb to. Please bear
in mind that many of the pictures are taken at an
angle, as the monkeys can be sitting as high as
15 feet up in the air. This could make the
enclosures look smaller than they actually are.
ALL RESIDENTS OF THE SANCTUARY ARE AVAILABLE FOR
SPONSORSHIP, FOR DETAILS VISIT THE MINDY'S WEBSITE.
****COMING SOON****A new and exciting addition to
the sponsorship program.

sanctuary. See them at play, eating, socializing
and just being themselves. All this is set to
music. Sponsorship of a monkey is only $25.00 a
