We would like to welcome the new members
to Monkey Tales.
Come Meet The Monkeys, see what they were,
who they have become and what they are up
to now.
This issue will introduce you to Sybill,
Bobby Mann, Magan, Maxine, Alex and JJ
Sybill is a White Front Capuchin who was
only 3 years old when she arrived at
Mindy's in April, 1999. She had been
confiscated from her owner when she was
found kept in a small bird cage. She was
kept at a zoo in Ohio until the court
case was over. In order to keep her in
the cage, she was chained to the bars
with a collar around her waist. As her
owners were frightened of her she was
never allowed outside the cage. In order
to remove the collar, it had to be cut
off. Sybill also suffers psychologically
from her ordeal. She suffers from some
type of flare ups, where all of a sudden
she just starts screaming. When this
happens, one of the other capuchins will
rush right over to comfort her until she
calms down.
Bobby Mann is a 15 year old White Front
Capuchin. He had been used to entertain
at children's parties in Texas. When being
surrendered to Mindy's in July 1993, at
the age of 5, his owner stated that he was
not a nice monkey. Since he has been at
Mindy's, it has been found that he is a
VERY NICE MONKEY. He has a very important
self appointed job. Bobby Mann is the
official taste test monkey. He will taste
his apple or what ever treat is set out,
then becomes very vocal calling all of the
others to come and see what he has found.
He chatters loudly until everyone arrives.
Magan is a White Front Brown Capuchin who
was born in April 1996. She came from a
very loving home in April 1998. Her owner,
a young woman, was diagnosed with terminal
cancer, and had to find someone who would
care for her pet with the same love that
she would have liked to be able to provide.
Hopefully, she received a great deal of
comfort knowing that Magan was going to
be spending the remainder of her life at
Mindy's. Magan is the official lock checker.
Whenever someone has been inside cleaning
her enclosure, she always rushes over to
shake the lock, just hoping that someone
has left without double checking that it
was secure. In five years, she has never
found it unlocked, but she keeps trying.
If you get too close to the cage while
doing yard work, Magan loves to reach
through the wire and try to pinch you.
Maxine and Alex arrived in July 1998, as
the result of a divorce. While tensions
were getting worse in their house they
were becoming extremely stressed. There
was not enough time to be spent with them,
so they were spending more and more time
alone. From infants they were kept in
small cages and were not able to move
around very much. When they first arrived
a small enclosure was set up for them.
They had no idea how to climb. Every time
they tried, they would get just a couple
of feet off the ground and fall. As they
were not high up, no one was injured.
They are now both excellent climbers.
Both Maxine and Alex still suck their
thumbs.
Maxine is a White Front Capuchin who was
only 3 years old when she arrived. When
she arrived she did not have much of an
interest in toys. One of her favorite
past times, weather permitting, is
playing and walking around in the pool
with her new friends.
Alex is a White Front Capuchin who was
only 2 years old when he arrived. Like
Maxine, he did not have much interest
in toys. A branch with some leaves on
it can entertain him for hours. There
is a really cute picture in the
yahoogroups photo album of Alex, Maxine
and Magan, where Alex is covering his
mouth, as if to say Hurry Up And Take
The Picture.
JJ is an 8 year old White Front Black
Capuchin who arrived in April 2002. His
former owners contacted Linda on a
Saturday night, stating that he was
getting aggressive, and they had no
place to keep him. He was also stinking
up their house. By Sunday he was at
Mindy's. After being fed an improper
diet he was extremely thin when he
arrived. Being malnourished has
also caused his growth to be stunted.
He has now begun to put on some weight.
He seems to be right at home with the
other capuchins. Bobby Mann and Alex
took to him immediately. Bobby Mann
and JJ spend hours grooming each other.
One of JJ's favorite past times is
laying on a platform in front of the
fan that is kept circulating in the
monkey house when it is warm.
WHAT THEY ARE UP TO NOW!
Everyone in this troop gets along so well
together. JJ as the newcomer to the troop
had been accepted immediately, he has
such a wonderful personality. JJ and
Bobby Mann are the best of friends. They
even sleep together, sharing a blanket
in one house, while the others sleep
together in a second house. During the
day, all of the monkeys go back and forth
from house to house. JJ does not like the
cold at all. He was raised in a home with
both air and heat, so his first winter
had been a learning experience for him.
He quickly learned that if he sat in an
igloo that faced the south west, he could
enjoy the sun, while not being out in
the elements. Due to all of the jumping,
running and climbing that JJ does, he is
no longer thin, and is hard to tell apart
from Alex. We are happy to report that
Maxine and Alex have finally realized
just how much fun playing with toys can
be. For some monkeys this just takes
longer than with others. Everyone enjoys
playing by themselves with toys, just as
much as they enjoy an exciting game of
tag. Sometimes, Bobby Mann, Alex and JJ
can be seen just chasing each other
around in circles, and having a ball
doing it. They all enjoy playing with
and bouncing any type of balls,
especially JJ. They were thrilled with
a basketball tug toy, this is a
basketball with straps across it. Magan
loves to play with anything that makes
noise. The more noise she can make,
the happier she is. Like many of the
monkeys at Mindy's, they all love riding
toys. Maxine has been spending a lot of
time bouncing up and down on a Busy Walker
with attached toys. Alex enjoys a toy
truck chew toy. Sybill likes to spend a
lot of time by herself instead of
socializing. Even after being safe and
secure at Mindy's for more than 4 years,
she just cannot shake her horrible past.
They all love to sit and groom and be
groomed. They have a favorite snack,
Welch's Fruit Snacks. These are made
with real juice and are in the shape of
the actual fruit. Their favorites are
Concord Grape and Strawberry. Sybill
loves Brazil nuts. When Linda appears,
Sybill will climb all over her enclosure,
watching, just to see if Linda is coming
to give her a treat.

Mindy's has the largest enclosures of any
Primate Sanctuary, complete with wooden
shelves and perches for the monkeys to sit
on and climb to. Please bear in mind that
many of the pictures are taken at an angle,
as the monkeys can be sitting as high as
15 feet up in the air. This could make the
enclosures look smaller than they actually
are.
