Come Meet Two Of The Residents Who Arrived
This Year.
This issue will introduce you to Beasley and Tommy.
Beasley, a Bonnet Macaque, arrived in April 2003
when he was only a year old. His owner loves him
very much, but for personal reasons could not
keep him. He was spared the stress of transport,
and was driven to Mindy's by his former owner.
Unlike many of the other residents, Beasley had
been well taken care of, and had been fed a
proper diet. Some of his favorite foods are
oranges, apples, raw peanuts, bananas, sweet
potatoes with his favorite being grapes. He
enjoys dry monkey biscuits. Beasley is food
aggressive, so their enclosure has 2 feeding
stations. He loves to play with toys that are
black and white, the bigger the better. Beasley
likes to spend his time swinging. Beasley also
enjoys interacting with the sanctuary dogs.
Tommy, a Java Macaque, arrived in July 2003
at 4 years old. Tommy is very neurotic and is
having a hard time adjusting. He was a former
pet, that began threatening the family. Due
to being fed an improper diet, Tommy was
underweight when he arrived. He had not been
given water, just juice. Now Tommy is eating
a well balanced diet, and drinking water.
He has not gained much weight, but he has
grown. While Tommy enjoys many foods, his
favorite fruit is grapes and his favorite
vegetable is sweet potatoes. Unlike Beasley,
Tommy prefers his biscuits soaked in juice.
He loves to play with toys that rattle or
make noise, preferably something that he can
hold in his hand. Tommy enjoys climbing.
Beasley and Tommy do not groom each other.
Hopefully one day they will realize how much
they can enjoy being groomed by another monkey.
LINDA WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE THAT HAS

HELP US MAKE THE SECOND ANNUAL CHRISTMAS MONKEY
TOY DRIVE A SUCCESS!!
Wouldn't you like to make a monkeys Christmas
dreams come true? Our goal is to collect one
toy for every monkey and a group toy for every
enclosure. The toys do not have to be new, just
in good condition. What many people do not
realize is that monkeys enjoy the same toys
that human children do. You just have to make
sure that the toy is sturdy enough to be played
with by a strong child. For example, Fisher
Price or Playskool, busy boxes or riding toys
make excellent choices for them. The toys cannot
be something that can be easily taken apart. As
you are putting away the backyard toys, if your
child will outgrow them by next summer, consider
sending them to the monkeys. Keep this in mind
as you are getting rid of the old toys to make
room for the new Christmas ones. They also enjoy
flat bed sheets that will have plenty of knots
tied in them. They drag them around and hide
underneath them. When they peek out to see if
anyone is watching, another monkey will quickly
pounce on them, and then the wrestling fun begins.
Spray them with a little perfume and they enjoy
them all the more. All of the monkeys love to play
with pails and shovels. Sometimes out of necessity,
dust pans and containers are substituted. They like
to fill up the pails with mulch from the floor of
their enclosures. If you would like to donate a toy
as a gift, please indicate this when the donation
is made. A gift notification will be sent to that
special someone letting them know the donation was
made in their name.
Just to give you an idea of what monkeys play with,
please visit:
http://www.amomentintimedonations.freeservers.com/photo.html
where you will see photos of the monkeys enjoying
themselves with their toys. For example:
1) Indigo and his pail.
2) Detroit has climbed up high, just as soon as
he was given a basketball. He did not want to
share his new found treasure.
3) Katy Jo is enjoying herself on her toddlers
swing.
4) Cookie on her slide. Monkeys do not use a slide
the same way that humans do. Instead of sliding
down the middle, they slide down the sides.
