We would like to welcome the new members to
Monkey Tales.
BEGINNING WITH THE APRIL 2004 ISSUE, MONKEY
TALES WILL NO LONGER BE SENT OUT ON THE
5TH OF EVERY MONTH. MONKEY TALES WILL BE
SENT OUT ON THE 19TH OF EVERY MONTH.
Come meet the monkeys, see what they were, who
they have become and what they are up to now.
This issue will introduce you to Nona, Sissy, Randy
and Andy who share their enclosure with Precious,
Rowdy, Katy Lynn and Cookie who will be featured
in a future issue.
Nona, is a tiny Weeper Capuchin, who arrived on
April 8, 2002. She is a former pet that after 7 years
did not even rate a name. After she bit the owners
wife, he had some of her teeth removed, and her
jaw was broken in the process. If Mindy's could
not give Nona a permanent home, she was going
to be euthanized. Linda's husband drove 500 miles
round trip to Kansas and picked her up. She had
been kept in a dog crate, being allowed out for
brief periods. When she first arrived, she would
just sit and rock. Cookie and Nona became best
friends. When Katy Lynn would try and scare
Nona, Cookie would come to her aid. She quickly
found out how much fun she could have, just
climbing and sitting on tree branches. Nona loves
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. She had never
seen a monkey before, now everyplace she looks
there is another monkey. When Nona was only at
Mindy's for a couple of months, she had a health
emergency. One day Linda noticed that she was
not acting right. She was immediately checked
and was taken to the vet. Apparently, when her
jaw was broken, it was wired shut and not all
of the wire had been removed. She had wire
protruding through her gums, between two of her
back teeth. She was being jabbed in the soft
tissue of her mouth and under her tongue every
time she closed her mouth or tried to swallow.
Now recovered from her ordeal, she is thriving
and enjoying just being a monkey.
Sissy is a Black Cap Capuchin from Alabama, who
is approximately 19 years of age. She finally arrived
on April 29, 2002 along with Randy, Andy and Mikey
a Stumptail Macaque who had been featured in a
previous issue. Sissy was originally a surplus zoo
capuchin who was sold to a broker. He apparently
thought it was a good idea to remove some of her
teeth. He removed 4 on the top and 4 on the
bottom, leaving her with only back teeth. This can
lead to bone loss, loss of support for the remaining
teeth, which can then shift and loosen. While pulling
them he broke her jaw. When she was received by
her new owner she was bloody and traumatized.
This was over 16 years ago. Even after having a
loving owner, she is still unable to trust humans.
She would not even allow him to touch her. She
is quite happy just interacting with other monkeys
and not having any human contact. There is a very
special bond between her, Randy and Andy. However,
she has made a new best friend, Precious and Sissy
took to each other immediately.
Andy is a Black Cap Capuchin from Alabama. His age
is unknown. He was owned by his previous owner for
12 years. While it is not known what happened to
Andy in his past, he still carries some painful baggage.
He does not trust humans at all. However, Andy does
love being around other monkeys. Andy loves banging
pieces of wood together, swinging and climbing.
Randy is a Black Cap Capuchin from Alabama. His age
is also unknown. He was owned by his former owner
for 12 years. Linda has nicknamed him "Randy Dandy".
Randy is a very gentle and sweet monkey. Randy and
Andy had not been together before their arrival. Once
together Andy immediately began to groom Randy.
Before they had their vasectomies Randy and Andy
were kept in an enclosure adjacent to their current
cage mates. Randy would sit near the wire where
Katy Lynn could reach in and groom him. Randy
and Andy have to work on their grooming techniques,
as this is all new to them. While no one has been
injured, there are a few bald spots. They seem to
scratch and pull instead of smoothing out, and
moving to a new spot. Randy has a very outgoing
personality and is very well socialized with the other
7 monkeys in his troop, including Rowdy, who is
another male. However, he is food aggressive and
along with Andy and Sissy needs to be separated
at feeding time so everyone can get their fair share.
What they are up to now!!!
In this troop, there are some personality clashes.
In some cases, they seem to just tolerate each
other. Nona and Cookie are still best of friends
and are inseparable. Katy Lynn is still trying to
scare Nona by lunging at her. Sissy also tries to
get in on the action and will go after Cookie and
Nona. Randy's best friend is Katy Lynn. Andy's
best friend is Randy. In spite of all this, while
there is at times a lot of screeching, no one has
ever been injured.
One thing everyone in this troop has in common
is that they love to play.
Linda is happy to report that Randy and Andy
have mastered their grooming techniques. Now
there are no more bald spots.
When Randy, Andy and Sissy had a visit from
their former owner Andy was very glad to see
him, Randy and Sissy ran from him.
Mindy's could really use some volunteers. The
sanctuary is located in Newcastle Oklahoma.
This is near Oklahoma City. If you live in the
area, or know someone that is interested,
please contact Linda at 405-387-4353. If
she is not available, please leave a message
on the answering machine.
When you make a $25.00 donation or sponsor
a monkey you will receive a Flip Album on CD.
You will view monkeys playing, eating and
socializing. This is all set to music.

Mindy's has the largest enclosures of any Primate
Sanctuary, complete with wooden shelves and
perches for the monkeys to sit on and climb to.
Please bear in mind that many of the pictures
are taken at an angle, as the monkeys can be
sitting as high as 15 feet up in the air. This
could make the enclosures look smaller than
they actually are.
