Monkey Tales
Come meet the monkeys, see what they were, who
they have become and what they are up to now.
This issue will introduce you to Precious, Rowdy,
Katy Lynn and Cookie who share their enclosure
with Nona, Sissy, Randy and Andy who were
featured in the March 2004 issue.
Precious is a 19 year old Black Cap Capuchin
who has been at Mindy's since October 1994.
She is a former pet whose owner thought that
she belonged kept in a small bird cage. Due to
confinement in such a small space, with limited
mobility, she suffers from curvature of the
spine. Her growth was also stunted due to an
improper diet. Precious is a very neurotic
little capuchin. She has some irreversible
behaviors, such as pulling out her hair. While
she does not trust adults, she loves children.
Linda thinks that perhaps at one time she was
a child's pet. On any given day you can find
Precious doing what she loves most, digging
in her mulch floor.
Rowdy is a 17 year old Black Cap Hybrid with
a slight overbite. Unable to get along with his
owners new wife, Rowdy was brought to Mindy's
in July 2000. When dropping Rowdy off, his
former owner stated that it was like losing a
son. As he destroyed any water bottle he was
given, he was only able to receive water when
his owner was home. Now he seems to never
be able to satisfy his thirst. Upon arrival,
he was very intimidated by his new cagemates.
He had never seen another monkey before and
now he was going to be sharing his enclosure
with 3 females. Very quickly he learned how
nice it was having 3 females wanting to groom
him. Rowdy carries some very painful baggage
with him, and he is extremely neurotic. If Rowdy
is playing with a toy or touching anything, and
he sees that someone is watching him, he drops
it, and immediately begins to scream and bite his
hand. While this is happening, he holds his arm
away from his body, bent at the elbow at a
strange angle, hand dangling, almost as if it
does not belong to him. We can only imagine what
he has been through. Hopefully, time will heal
his emotional wounds. In spite of all he must
have been through, he is still a very sweet and
affectionate monkey. When his previous owner
had visited, as soon as he saw him, he began
to scream with joy and run over to him to give
a great big hug around the neck. However, he
expressed no interest in wanting to leave with
him. After the initial glad to see you is over
with Rowdy goes off and once again participates
in monkey activities, such as grooming one of
the girls. When Rowdy is deep in concentration,
he is adorable. There is a picture of him
concentrating on a piece of broccoli, with his
tongue sticking out ever so slightly in the
yahoogroups photo album.
Katy Lynn is a former pet of Linda's. She was
purchased as a companion for Tina, the first
capuchin that Linda owned. Tina was 2 weeks
old when purchased in July 1989. By the time
Tina was 2 years old, she began acting less
like a human baby and more like a primate.
At the time Linda thought the best way to
remedy the increasingly difficult situation
was to purchase another capuchin from the
same breeder. Tina has since passed away.
Katie Lynn was born on 8/16/91 and was
sold at only 4 days old. Monkeys, like all
other animals taken from their mothers at
such an early age are a lot of work. Katy Lynn
does not enjoy playing as much as the other
capuchins do. She does not express much
interest in toys. The flirt that she is, she
would much rather spend her time cooing
and chirping at her favorite monkey man
Rowdy and other male capuchins in nearby
enclosures. All males are vasectomized before
being allowed in the same enclosure as a
female. Rowdy certainly enjoys all of the
attention and grooming that she focuses
on him.
When Cookie, who is Katy Lynn's biological
sister, was born on 8/17/92 the perspective
purchaser backed out. The breeder contacted
Linda and she agreed to take her. Once again
Linda found herself nursing a baby capuchin.
By this time Linda had built large enclosures,
complete with attached heated buildings and
trees, to provide the monkeys with the most
natural setting she could. Cookie loves to play.
Cookie's favorite toys are musical toys that
play nursery rhymes. Cookie will sit there and
just keep pushing the button over and over
again.
What they are up to now!!!
In this troop, there are best friends and
monkeys that just tolerate each other.
Nona and Cookie are best of friends.
Where ever you see one, the other is not
far behind. Rowdy's best friend is Cookie.
Sissy loves Precious and Katy Lynn. Randy's
best friend is Katy Lynn. Andy's best friend
is Randy.
One thing everyone in this troop has in common
is that they love to play. Many of the monkeys
at Mindy's enjoy shoveling up the mulch from the
floors of their enclosures into pails or containers.
There is a picture of Cookie with a jeep that was
donated to the toy drive on the Monkey Tales
Yahoogroups homepage.
Mindy's could really use some volunteers. The
sanctuary is located in Newcastle Oklahoma.
This is near Oklahoma City. If you live in the
area, or know someone that is interested,
please contact Linda at 405-387-4353. If she
is not available, please leave a message on the
answering machine.
When you make a $25.00 donation or sponsor a
monkey you will receive a Flip Album on CD. You
will view monkeys playing, eating and socializing.
This is all set to music.

Mindy's has the largest enclosures of any Primate
Sanctuary, complete with wooden shelves and
perches for the monkeys to sit on and climb to.
Please bear in mind that many of the pictures
are taken at an angle, as the monkeys can be
sitting as high as 15 feet up in the air. This
could make the enclosures look smaller than
they actually are.
