We would like to welcome the new members to
Monkey Tales.
Come meet the monkeys, see what they were
and who they have become.
This issue will introduce you to Ginger,
Tommy and Katy Jo.
Ginger is a Rhesus Macaque, who was still
a baby when she arrived being only 16 months
old. She was turned in from The Pet Den,
in Glen Head, New York, in March 2001. After
being exploited as a form of entertainment
and put on display when not being used,
Ginger is finally enjoying life. Her favorite
food is grapes. When she first arrived she
was very aggressive. She now spends her days
playing chase games, climbing, grooming and
being groomed. Ginger is always swinging and
climbing. She likes to go off by herself for
some quiet time by sitting on a shelf 20 feet
up in the air where she can see for a mile.
At Mindy's she is valued for her life as an
individual and not as a commodity.
Tommy, a Java Macaque, arrived in July 2003
at 4 years old. Tommy was very neurotic and
had a hard time adjusting. He is a former
pet that began threatening the family. Due
to being fed an improper diet Tommy was
underweight when he arrived. He had not been
given water to drink, only juice. Tommy is
now eating a well balanced diet, and has gained
weight and has grown. While Tommy loves many
foods, his favorite fruit is grapes and his
favorite vegetable is sweet potatoes and he
likes his biscuits soaked in juice. He loves
to climb. Tommy loves to play with toys that
rattle or make noise, preferably something
that he can hold in his hand. He now enjoys
walking in the grass and eating it. While
Tommy does not groom another monkey he does
get groomed by Ginger. When the girls are
too noisy, Tommy chases them and they run
and squeal.
Katy Jo, a Rhesus Macaque, was born on 4/1/2000
and arrived at Mindy's in February 2004. Upon
her arrival she was a self biter, rocked back
and forth clutching a stuffed toy and spun in
circles. Now she enjoys sliding down a pole and
swinging and just being a monkey. She loves to
eat. While she enjoys all foods, her favorite
is bananas. Katy Jo and Ginger have become
friends and enjoy grooming each other. Her
favorite toy is a pump type plastic toy that
when you push on it, the balls inside turn.
It is designed for small hands and is easy to
use. She carries it with her from place to place.
Mindy's could really use some volunteers. The
sanctuary is located in Newcastle, Oklahoma.
This is near Oklahoma City. If you live in the
area, or know someone that is interested in
volunteering please contact Linda at 405-387-4354.
If she is not available, there is an answering
machine for you to leave a message.
If you make a $25.00 donation or sponsor a
monkey you will receive a Flip Album on CD.
You will view monkeys playing, eating and
socializing. This is all set to music.
