Monkey Tales - March 2005   Message List

We would like to welcome the new members to
Monkey Tales.

Come Meet The Monkeys, see what they were,
who they have become and what they are up
to now.

This issue will feature Chico, Sybill,
Maxine and Alex. They share their enclosure
with Magan, Bobby Mann and JJ who were
featured in the February 2005 issue of Monkey
Tales.

Chico, a former pet, is a 7 year old Cinnamon
Capuchin who arrived in March 2004. He is a
very hyper monkey and likes to scream. Chico's
best friend is Sybill. They spend time grooming
and chasing one another. His favorite food is
monkey chow soaked in juice. Since he is now
eating a proper diet he has gained some weight.
He likes toys that he can hold in his hand.
While holding them he spins in circles.

Sybill is a White Front Capuchin who was only
3 years old when she arrived at Mindy's in
April, 1999. She had been confiscated from her
owner when she was found kept in a small bird
cage. She was kept at a zoo in Ohio until the
court case was over. In order to keep her in
the cage, she was chained to the bars with a
collar around her waist. As her owners were
frightened of her she was never allowed outside
the cage. In order to remove the collar, it had
to be cut off. Sybill also suffers psychologically
from her ordeal. She suffers from some type of
flare ups, where all of a sudden she just starts
screaming. When this happens, one of the other
capuchins will rush right over to comfort her
until she calms down.

Maxine and Alex arrived in July 1998, as
the result of a divorce. While tensions
were getting worse in their house they were
becoming extremely stressed. There was not
enough time to be spent with them, so they
were spending more and more time alone. From
infants they were kept in small cages and
were not able to move around very much. When
they first arrived a small enclosure was set
up for them. They had no idea how to climb.
Every time they tried, they would get just
a couple of feet off the ground and fall.
As they were not high up, no one was injured.
They are now both excellent climbers. Both
Maxine and Alex still suck their thumbs.

Maxine is a White Front Capuchin who was
only 3 years old when she arrived. When
she arrived she did not have much of an
interest in toys. Alex is Maxine's best
friend.

Alex is a White Front Capuchin who was
only 2 years old when he arrived. Like
Maxine, he did not have much interest
in toys. A branch with some leaves on
it can entertain him for hours. There
is a really cute picture in the
yahoogroups photo album of Alex, Maxine
and Magan, where Alex is covering his
mouth, as if to say Hurry Up And Take
The Picture.

When Chico first arrived, he did not get
along with Magan. Now everyone in this
troop gets along well. Chico does
somersaults and tumbles with JJ. Linda
is happy to report that Maxine and Alex
have realized just how much fun playing
with toys can be. For some monkeys this
just takes longer than with others.
Everyone enjoys playing by themselves
with toys, just as much as they enjoy
an exciting game of tag. Sometimes,
Bobby Mann, Alex and JJ can be seen just
chasing each other around in circles,
and having a ball doing it. They all
enjoy playing with and bouncing any
type of balls. Like many of the monkeys
at Mindy's, they all love riding toys.
They all love to sit and groom and be
groomed. Sybill loves Brazil nuts. When
Linda appears, Sybill will climb all over
her enclosure, watching, just to see if
Linda is coming to give her a treat.

Mindy's has the largest enclosures of any
Primate Sanctuary, complete with wooden
shelves and perches for the monkeys to sit
on and climb to. Please bear in mind that
many of the pictures are taken at an angle,
as the monkeys can be sitting as high as
15 feet up in the air. This could make the
enclosures look smaller than they actually
are.

When shopping online, please check to
see if the store that you will be making

http://www.igive.com If it is and you
list Mindy's as your charity of choice
the sanctuary will receive a portion of
your purchase donated, at no cost to you.

For your convenience, donations can be made
online by clicking on "Make A Donation" on
the Mindy's homepage http://www.mindysmem.org
You can make a donation to the Building Fund
to help raise funds for housing future

funds were not raised quickly enough to rescue
two research monkeys, Ben and Norman, before
they were sold back into research. You can also
donate to the Mindy's General Fund.

If you know an animal lover and don't know what
to give as a gift, we have the solution. Send a
donation in their name and a card will be sent
letting them know you have made the donation.
