Come meet the monkeys.
This issue will feature Gabby and George.
Gabby is an 11 year old Patas Monkey who
is a former pet that arrived at Mindy's in
September 1999. When originally purchased,
his owners were told that he was a baby
Capuchin. They were not prepared for the
much larger Patas Monkey. As he continued
to grow, he became more aggressive. His
former owners realized that he was not an
ideal pet. They loved him very much, and
only wanted to do what was best for him.
They began looking for a zoo or a sanctuary
to take him. No one would accept him.
Finally, a zoo gave them Mindy's phone
number. Arrangements were immediately made
for Gabby's arrival. Wanting to make the
trip as stress free as possible, his former
owners opted to drive him the 13 hours from
Indiana to Oklahoma. This also gave them
the opportunity to reassure themselves that
they had made the right decision for Gabby.
As Patas Monkeys need a lot of space to run,
a new long enclosure needed to be built.
This enclosure was not going to be ready until
October. He would be spending his first month
in a temporary enclosure. Imagine his surprise
when first coming from a 4x4x8 enclosure in
his previous home to his temporary enclosure,
10x10x10 and then on to his permanent enclosure
measuring 35x10x15. One of his favorite past
times is playing with the dogs that also call
Mindy's home. They love to race back and forth
the entire length of the enclosure. As you can
tell, Gabby gets lots of exercise. Now all
that was needed to make his life complete was
another Patas for companionship. Gabby's owners
have not abandoned him, they do still contribute
to his care and well being.
Along comes George, a Patas Monkey, who
was born on October 25, 1995 and arrived
at Mindy's in November 2000. He is a former
pet from New Jersey, purchased from a pet
store. He was loved very much by his former
owners. The only reason that he needed to
be relocated to a sanctuary was that his
family was moving and could not take him
with them. He now had a major adjustment
to make. In his former home, he had a room
of his very own and would sit in his owners
lap in the evenings to watch television.
George could not understand why he was
being put into a dog crate and shipped
somewhere strange. His entire world was
being turned upside down. His trip to the
sanctuary was extremely stressful for him.
He missed his flight, and ended up spending
the night at the airport in New Jersey.
After missing his first flight, he also
ended up missing his connections. His food
supply was not meant to last this long.
Needless to say, he ran out of food and
water, arriving very hungry and thirsty.
George was castrated at a very young age,
so he will never develop the muscle tone
of a full grown male. Since his arrival,
he has gained weight and made a new best
friend in Gabby. He has substituted his
fondness of television and cuddling with
his owner for more monkey type activities,
like playing chase games and grooming his
cagemate. George loves fruit more than
vegetables. He does however, like sweet
potatoes. He prefers his baked not raw.
His favorite fruit is grapes. He also
enjoys bananas and apples.
If you would like to make a fruit donation
to the monkeys, please call 800-274-2677
and ask that a box of oranges, apples or
bananas be added to the weekly order
(every Monday) that Linda places. Payment
can be made directly, or arrangements can
be made with Linda 405-387-4354 or
Linda@... to have your payment
sent to Mindy's.
If you would like to send the monkeys
sunflower seeds, you can visit

online store that you prefer. Linda
usually orders 5 lb bags.
