They were not retired from the same research
facility.
While they are not in the same enclosure, they

Come meet the monkeys, see what they were
and who they have become.
This issue will feature Suki and Bonny.
Suki, a Bonnet Macaque, was retired from
research in October 2001, when she was
12 years old. She had spent her entire
life as a research monkey. She had been
born into research and was rejected by her
mother. When she first arrived at Mindy's
she could not get enough of sitting in the
sunshine. In fact, she spent so much time
sunning herself that she received a slight
sunburn on her pale face. Now her face is
a nice walnut color.
Bonny is a Bonnet Macaque, who arrived at
Mindy's in March 1993, when she was only
8 months old. She lost her home due to a
divorce. As a result of being taken away
from her mother at an early age, she
still sucks her thumb.
Bonny and Suki act like two little old
spinsters. They just love sleeping, grooming
and laying out in the sunshine. They are
two of the quietest monkeys at Mindy's.
Unlike most of the monkeys, they are not
busybodies.

This issue will feature Kelly.
Kelly is a Rhesus Macaque who arrived at Mindy's
on April 4, 2005. Her age is not known. She was
rescued from an abuse situation in Tennessee.
She had been kept in a small wire rabbit cage for
14-15 years. While the court case was going on
she was kept in a foster home for 3 years. She
had been kept in a small shed with dog cages
stacked on top of hers. The only food that Kelly
received was what the puppies knocked out of
their bowls, that was also how she got her water.
She was occasionally given a dog biscuit or a piece
of bread. Her favorite food is baked potatoes. Her
favorite fruits are grapes, raisins and peaches. Next
is bananas and oranges are okay. Apples are not
one of her favorites.
If you need a gift idea, or would like to
make a fruit donation to the monkeys yourself,
call 1-800-274-2677 and ask that a box of
oranges, apples or bananas be added to the
weekly order (every Monday) that Linda places.
Payment can be made directly, or you can make
arrangements with Linda 405-387-4354 or

time of the year, not just at the holidays.

HELP MAKE THE FIFTH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS
MONKEY TOY DRIVE A SUCCESS!!
The goal is to collect at least one toy for
every monkey and a group toy for every
enclosure. The toys do not have to be new,
just in good condition. What many people do
not realize is that monkeys enjoy the same
toys that human children do. You just have
to make sure that the toy is sturdy enough
to be played with by a strong child. For
example, Fisher Price or Playskool, busy boxes
or riding toys make excellent choices for them.
The toys cannot be something that can easily
be taken apart. As you are getting rid of your
child's old toys to make room for the new
Christmas ones, consider sending them to the
monkeys. They also enjoy flat bed sheets that
will have plenty of knots tied in them. They
drag them around and hide underneath them.
When they peek out to see if anyone is watching,
another monkey will quickly pounce on them, and
then the wrestling fun begins. Spray them with a
little perfume and they enjoy them all the more.
Kong toys for dogs are used as enrichment items.
Monkeys also enjoy playing with balls such as
basketballs, mini basketballs and tennis balls
(they can only have tennis balls made for dogs).
Many of the monkeys enjoy playing with baby
rattles. Even some musical instruments, such
as an xylophone, make good gifts.
If you have any questions regarding the toy
drive, please contact Linda at Linda@...
or 405-387-4354.
If you would like to donate a toy as a gift,
please indicate this when the donation is made.
A gift notification will be sent to that special
someone letting them know the donation was made

Come meet the monkeys.
This issue will feature Calvin.
Calvin, a Pig Tail Macaque, arrived at Mindy's on
November 14, 2003. He is from California, where
he was found wandering loose. His exact age is
unknown, but Linda guesses that he was
approximately 15 months old when he arrived.
On his first day at Mindy's, he jumped, climbed,
tumbled and rolled. He also enjoyed swinging on
the swings and sliding down the slide. Every toy
in his enclosure was investigated. He really tired
himself out and slept well that night. Calvin's
favorite vegetable is romaine lettuce and his
favorite fruit is bananas.
If you would like to send a fruit donation
to the monkeys, please call 800-274-2677

bananas be added to the weekly order

Come meet the monkeys.
This issue will feature Gabby and George.
Gabby is an 12 year old Patas Monkey who
is a former pet that arrived at Mindy's in
September 1999. When originally purchased,
his owners were told that he was a baby
Capuchin. They were not prepared for the
much larger Patas Monkey. As he continued
to grow, he became more aggressive. His
former owners realized that he was not an
ideal pet. They loved him very much, and
only wanted to do what was best for him.
They began looking for a zoo or a sanctuary
to take him. No one would accept him.
Finally, a zoo gave them Mindy's phone
number. Arrangements were immediately made
for Gabby's arrival. Wanting to make the
trip as stress free as possible, his former
owners opted to drive him the 13 hours from
Indiana to Oklahoma. This also gave them
the opportunity to reassure themselves that
they had made the right decision for Gabby.
As Patas Monkeys need a lot of space to run,
a new long enclosure needed to be built.
This enclosure was not going to be ready until
October. He would be spending his first month
in a temporary enclosure. Imagine his surprise
when first coming from a 4x4x8 enclosure in
his previous home to his temporary enclosure,
10x10x10 and then on to his permanent enclosure
measuring 35x10x15. One of his favorite past
times is playing with the dogs that also call
Mindy's home. They love to race back and forth
the entire length of the enclosure. As you can
tell, Gabby gets lots of exercise. Gabby's owners
have not abandoned him, they do still contribute
to his care and well being.
Along comes George, a Patas Monkey, who
was born on October 25, 1995 and arrived
at Mindy's in November 2000. He is a former
pet from New Jersey, purchased from a pet
store. He was loved very much by his former
owners. The only reason that he needed to
be relocated to a sanctuary was that his
family was moving and could not take him
with them. He now had a major adjustment
to make. In his former home, he had a room
of his very own and would sit in his owners
lap in the evenings to watch television.
George could not understand why he was
being put into a dog crate and shipped
somewhere strange. His entire world was
being turned upside down. His trip to the
sanctuary was extremely stressful for him.
He missed his flight, and ended up spending
the night at the airport in New Jersey.
After missing his first flight, he also
ended up missing his connections. His food
supply was not meant to last this long.
Needless to say, he ran out of food and
water, arriving very hungry and thirsty.
George was castrated at a very young age,
so he will never develop the muscle tone
of a full grown male. Since his arrival,
he has gained weight and made a new best
friend in Gabby. He has substituted his
fondness of television and cuddling with
his owner for more monkey type activities,
like playing chase games and grooming his
cagemate. George loves fruit more than
vegetables. He does however, like sweet
potatoes. He prefers his baked not raw.
His favorite fruit is grapes. He also
enjoys bananas and apples.
If you would like to make a fruit donation
to the monkeys, please call 800-274-2677
and ask that a box of oranges, apples or
bananas be added to the weekly order
(every Monday) that Linda places. Payment
can be made directly, or arrangements can
be made with Linda 405-387-4354 or

This issue will feature Linus, Garner and
Pumpkin.
Linus, an 8 year old Rhesus Macaque, is a
former illegal pet from New York, who arrived
in June 2001. His former owners were given 10
days to get rid of him or he was going to be
euthanized. Arrangements were made for him to
be surrendered to Mindy's. Everything was going
smoothly until Linus arrived at the airport for
his scheduled flight and he was refused boarding.
Linda was notified that he was not arriving on
schedule, and that was all that was known.
Linda and I spent countless hours over the next
few weeks worrying about him and wondering if
he was even still alive. Linda later found out that
he was being shuffled around by various friends
of his previous owner while she found alternate
transportation for him. Linus arrived at the
sanctuary after several days in his cage while
being transported by truck. As there was to be
no human contact with him once he was loaded,
all food and water had to be placed in his cage
before time. He also needed to wear a diaper.
Needless to say, he ran out of food and water
at some point. There was no way to make him
understand that he had to make his food last.
He arrived extremely hungry and thirsty, wearing
a soggy diaper. Getting him to eat was no
problem, he ate everything that was given to
him, including 3 bananas. His little belly was
bulging. When Linda went to check on him that
night and bring him a clean towel to sleep with,
she found him curled up on a chair. He took the
towel from her and went back to sleep. For the
first time in his life, he was lulled to sleep
by the sound of crickets. The following week,
when the vet arrived to check him out as well
as to vasectomize him (no monkeys are allowed
to breed at Mindy's) Linda found out that he
had an upper respiratory infection. He was going
to have to stay in the quarantine enclosure,
isolated for an even longer period of time.
Despite his ordeal, this sweet monkey is doing
just fine.
Garner, a 10 year old Java Macaque, arrived in
October 1998. He is another former pet whose
owners found that taking care of him was too
much of a responsibility. They did, however,
opt to drive him from Iowa. After they left, he
stared out the window and cried for days. Garner
was very small for his age. New plans had to be
made as to where to house him, as he was too
small to be placed with the monkeys that Linda
originally had in mind to be his cagemates. It was
decided that he would be kept in an indoor cage
with outdoor access along with Tasha, a Lesser
Spot Nose Guenon. He was a rowdy, hyper little
monkey and was a lot for Tasha to put up with.
One of his favorite activities was stealing her
blanket and taking it outdoors. Tasha was able
to help Garner with his socialization skills. By
the following summer he had grown enough to
be placed with the larger monkeys. They have
all become a family. They depend completely
on each other. Garner's former owners have
not abandoned him, they do contribute for his
care and well being.
Pumpkin is a 10 year old Java Macaque, who
arrived in June 2001. He was originally a
resident of Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge
(http://www.btn-wildlife.org) in Orlando,
Florida. He had been confiscated at 3 years
old, from an Orlando owner who did not have
a proper license. After he had been at the
sanctuary for 2 years, it was decided that
it was in his best interest to be with other
monkeys. This was not an easy decision to
reach as he was loved very much by his former
caregivers. Three women drove straight through,
for 24 hours from Florida to Oklahoma, bringing
all of his toys with them. They wanted to make
the trip as stress free as possible and also
wanted to make sure that he was going to be
safe at Mindy's. If they were even the least bit
apprehensive after meeting Linda and checking
out the sanctuary they were going to take him
back to Florida with them. They were thrilled to
see his large enclosure, which was much larger
than he was accustomed to. When they saw how
well he was getting along with the other monkeys,
they knew the right decision had been made. He
very quickly figured out that the best seat was in
between 2 other monkeys. This way you can get
groomed on both sides at the same time. Instead
of the tears Pumpkin's former caregivers had all
anticipated, when they left, they left with smiles.
Linus is still immature, and will throw handfuls
of wood chips behind him, like an angry bull
pawing at the ground when he does not get his
own way. Pumpkin, as the head honcho of the
troop, does not take any sass from anyone. Garner
is very quiet and minds his own business but can
hold his own when necessary.

a box of oranges, apples or bananas be added to

Come meet the monkeys, see what they were
and who they have become.
This issue will introduce you to Suki and
Bonny.
Suki, a Bonnet Macaque, was retired from
Lehmann College in October 2001, when she
was 12 years old. She had spent her entire
life as a research monkey. She had been
born into research and was rejected by her
mother. When she first arrived at Mindy's
she could not get enough of sitting in the
sunshine. In fact, she spent so much time
sunning herself that she received a slight
sunburn on her pale face. Now her face is
a nice walnut color.
Bonny is a Bonnet Macaque, who arrived at
Mindy's in March 1993, when she was only
8 months old. She lost her home due to a
divorce. As a result of being taken away
from her mother at an early age, she
still sucks her thumb.
Bonny and Suki act like two little old
spinsters. They just love sleeping, grooming
and laying out in the sunshine. They are
some of the quietest monkeys at Mindy's.
Unlike most of the monkeys, they are not
busybodies. They share their enclosure with
Beasley and Felix, but they do not interact
with them.
If you would like to send a fruit donation
to the monkeys, please call 800-274-2677
and ask that a box of oranges, apples or
bananas be added to the weekly order
(every Monday) that Linda places. Payment
can be made directly, or you can make
arrangements with Linda at 405-387-4354
or Linda@... for payment to be
sent to Mindy's.
If you would like to send sunflower seeds to
the monkeys, visit http://www.nutsonline.com
or any online store you prefer. Linda usually
orders 5 lb bags.
The sanctuary could really use some volunteers.
If you live in the area or know someone who
would be interested, please call Linda at
405-387-4354. If she is not available, there
is an answering machine for you to leave a
message.
When you sponsor a monkey or make a $25.00
donation, you will receive a Flip Album on
CD. You will view monkeys playing, eating
and socializing. This is set to music.
All residents of the sanctuary are available
for sponsorship. For details visit the Mindy's

Come Meet The Monkeys.
This issue will introduce you to Zeke, Eleanor,
Cleo & Meg.
This newsletter will have a slightly different
format as all of the monkeys have the same
background.
Zeke, Eleanor, Cleo and Meg are retired
research monkeys that arrived on 10/17/01.
Unfortunately, Zeke's behavior does not
allow him to be housed with the females.
Zeke's enclosure is adjacent to one
shared by Eleanor, Meg and Cleo. Some of
their enrichment items include a
suspended feeding table, perfect for a
monkey picnic spread, shelves and poles
for climbing on, as well as overhead beams
for the monkeys to sit on and watch
everything around them. When they first
arrived, all they would do is sit on a
shelf, and not move. They had all of this
room to begin exploring and all they
would do is sit there. However, they were
enjoying napping in the sunshine. Then
they realized that they could do whatever
they wanted.
Some of the best information that I receive
from Linda comes in the form of normal
correspondence, as opposed to specific
questions. This was the case with an email
I received from Linda just after the
research monkeys arrived, and I would like
to share a portion of it with you. As we
were only discussing the idea of an online
newsletter at that time, Linda had no idea
that I would save it and use it for a
future newsletter. "If you could see the
monkeys when I step outside of the house
and are within their sight, you would know
why without a doubt, I do this work for
the monkeys. The research ladies sit on
top of their house, all eyes watching me
to see what I am bringing them to eat. If
you could see the absolute passion in
Zeke's face every time he gets apples,
bananas, grapes or sweet potato slices,
it would bring tears to your eyes."
Zeke is a 16 year old Stumptail Macaque.
He was born in the research lab and was
rejected by his mother. Even though Zeke's
aggression does not allow him to be placed
with the females, he does vocalize with them,
as well as with the other Stumptails. One of
his favorite past times is reaching through
the enclosure and picking himself a handful
of grass. Another favorite is sifting through
his mulch floor looking for peanuts.
Eleanor, the dominant female, is a 24 year
old Stumptail Macaque. Eleanor grooms and
is groomed by Zeke through the wire that
separates them. Her favorite fruit is bananas
and her favorite vegetable is green peppers.
Cleo is a 22 year old Stumptail Macaque.
The sounds of crickets and frogs in the
nearby pond intrigue her. Cleo allows
Zeke to groom her through the wire that
separates them until he decides that it
is time to pull on her bottom lip and
then she runs away.
Meg is a 22 year old Stumptail Macaque.
If you want to make her day, bring her
a nice thick Peanut Butter and Jelly
sandwich. Meg will not go anywhere near
Zeke.
If you need a gift idea, or would like

The fourth annual toy drive was a success.
In order for the toys to be given out, the
monkeys are locked in a secure area, the
toys are then placed in their enclosures.
While this is happening, the monkeys are
pacing back and forth. When they are allowed
back into their enclosures, there are many
high pitched squeals of delight. The monkeys
love to call to their friends and neighbors.
Linda says, they seem to be saying, come and
get it, look at what I have. They are very
sharing animals. The monkeys received rattles,
trucks, busy boxes, an assortment of balls
and many other toys. Enough tennis balls were
received that every monkey was able to receive
one. Each enclosure received a basket ball as
well as large toys that more than one monkey
can enjoy. A box of blanket material was also
received. One way that this can be enjoyed is
by a monkey threading it through the top of the
enclosure, and sitting with it dangling down to
their shoulders. They also received some rubber
toys that have large hard plastic balls at the
ends and the middles glow when they are bounced.

Come meet the monkeys.
This issue will feature Gabby and George.
Gabby is an 11 year old Patas Monkey who
is a former pet that arrived at Mindy's in
September 1999. When originally purchased,
his owners were told that he was a baby
Capuchin. They were not prepared for the
much larger Patas Monkey. As he continued
to grow, he became more aggressive. His
former owners realized that he was not an
ideal pet. They loved him very much, and
only wanted to do what was best for him.
They began looking for a zoo or a sanctuary
to take him. No one would accept him.
Finally, a zoo gave them Mindy's phone
number. Arrangements were immediately made
for Gabby's arrival. Wanting to make the
trip as stress free as possible, his former
owners opted to drive him the 13 hours from
Indiana to Oklahoma. This also gave them
the opportunity to reassure themselves that
they had made the right decision for Gabby.
As Patas Monkeys need a lot of space to run,
a new long enclosure needed to be built.
This enclosure was not going to be ready until
October. He would be spending his first month
in a temporary enclosure. Imagine his surprise
when first coming from a 4x4x8 enclosure in
his previous home to his temporary enclosure,
10x10x10 and then on to his permanent enclosure
measuring 35x10x15. One of his favorite past
times is playing with the dogs that also call
Mindy's home. They love to race back and forth
the entire length of the enclosure. As you can
tell, Gabby gets lots of exercise. Now all
that was needed to make his life complete was
another Patas for companionship. Gabby's owners
have not abandoned him, they do still contribute
to his care and well being.
Along comes George, a Patas Monkey, who
was born on October 25, 1995 and arrived
at Mindy's in November 2000. He is a former
pet from New Jersey, purchased from a pet
store. He was loved very much by his former
owners. The only reason that he needed to
be relocated to a sanctuary was that his
family was moving and could not take him
with them. He now had a major adjustment
to make. In his former home, he had a room
of his very own and would sit in his owners
lap in the evenings to watch television.
George could not understand why he was
being put into a dog crate and shipped
somewhere strange. His entire world was
being turned upside down. His trip to the
sanctuary was extremely stressful for him.
He missed his flight, and ended up spending
the night at the airport in New Jersey.
After missing his first flight, he also
ended up missing his connections. His food
supply was not meant to last this long.
Needless to say, he ran out of food and
water, arriving very hungry and thirsty.
George was castrated at a very young age,
so he will never develop the muscle tone
of a full grown male. Since his arrival,
he has gained weight and made a new best
friend in Gabby. He has substituted his
fondness of television and cuddling with
his owner for more monkey type activities,
like playing chase games and grooming his
cagemate. George loves fruit more than
vegetables. He does however, like sweet
potatoes. He prefers his baked not raw.
His favorite fruit is grapes. He also
enjoys bananas and apples.
If you would like to make a fruit donation
to the monkeys, please call 800-274-2677
and ask that a box of oranges, apples or
bananas be added to the weekly order

with Bonny, Suki and Beasley. His favorite
fruit is bananas. His favorite vegetables
are sliced carrots and cucumbers. Felix now
ignores Bonny and Suki since Bonny would go
after him when he would pester her and Suki
would run from him. He enjoys playing chase
games, wrestling and grooming with Beasley.
There is a 20 foot telephone pole set in

HELP MAKE THE FOURTH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS
A gift notification will be sent to that special
someone letting them know the donation was made
in their name.
If you will be purchasing your toys online,

Mindy's as your charity of choice, the sanctuary
will receive a portion of your purchase donated.

This issue will introduce you to Phinneus
and Piaa.
Phinneus is a 21 year old Rhesus Macaque
who arrived at Mindy's this month after being
retired from research. He was a pet until he
was about a year old and then ended up in
research. His favorite fruit is grapes and his
favorite vegetable is baked potatoes.
Piaa is a 3 year old Rhesus Macaque who
arrived at Mindy's in September 2005. Her
favorite fruit is grapes and her favorite
vegetable is baked potatoes.
Phinneus and Piaa share their new lives with
Kelly, who was featured in a previous issue.
They are a happy family. Piaa takes turns
grooming Kelly and Phinneus, neither one of
them has returned the favor.
HELP MAKE THE FOURTH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS
MONKEY TOY DRIVE A SUCCESS!!
The goal is to collect at least one toy for
every monkey and a group toy for every
enclosure. The toys do not have to be new,
just in good condition. What many people do
not realize is that monkeys enjoy the same
toys that human children do. You just have
to make sure that the toy is sturdy enough
to be played with by a strong child. For
example, Fisher Price or Playskool, busy boxes
or riding toys make excellent choices for them.
The toys cannot be something that can easily
be taken apart. As you are getting rid your
child's old toys to make room for the new
Christmas ones, consider sending them to the
If you have any questions regarding the toy
drive, please contact Linda at
Linda@... or 405-387-4354.
If you would like to donate a toy as a gift,
please indicate this when the donation is made.
A gift notification will be sent to that special
someone letting them know the donation was made
in their name. If you will be purchasing your
toys online, please check to see if the store
you will be making your purchases with is listed
at http://www.IGIVE.com If it is, and you choose
Mindy's as your charity of choice, the sanctuary
will receive a portion of your purchase donated.
The amount donated varies by store.
Please have your toys delivered to Mindy's by
December 15, 2005
Toys can be mailed to:

This issue will introduce you to Peaches.
Peaches is a Java Macaque. Before arriving
at Mindy's Peaches had more than one owner.
The owner who brought Peaches to Mindy's,
drove from Virginia to the Chicago area to
rescue her. She had spent 5 years living in
a small iron parrot cage. The cage had been
kept padlocked, and so had Peaches. She wore
a waist collar that was locked. When Peaches
grew, the collar was not adjusted. It had to
be cut off and left Peaches with permanent
scars. She had not been fed a proper diet,
and weighed only 6 pounds. She also suffered
from second hand smoke. Peaches spent years
with her new owners until 2004 when their
situation changed. It took years of
rehabilitation for Peaches to eat, gain
weight, jump and climb. She is sharing her
life at Mindy's with Holly and a new arrival
Riki. Her favorite fruits are bananas and
grapes. Her favorite vegetables are lettuce
and broccoli. She does not show much of an
interest in toys. She does enjoy grooming her
cagemates. Peaches has not been abandoned by
her former owners, they contribute for her care.
Mindy's could really use some volunteers. The

Kelly is a Rhesus Macaque, who arrived on
April 4, 2005. Her age is not known. She
had been rescued from an abuse situation
in Tennessee, where she had been kept in
a small wire rabbit cage for 14 - 15 years.
While the court case was going on, she was
kept in a foster home for 3 years. She had
been kept in a small shed with dog cages
stacked on top of hers. The only food that
she received was what the puppies knocked
out of their bowls, and that was also how
she got her water. She was occasionally
given a dog biscuit or a piece of bread. Her
favorite food is baked potatoes. Her favorite
fruits are grapes, raisins and peaches, next
is bananas and oranges are okay. Apples are
not one of her favorites. She does not have
much of an interest in toys.

We would like to welcome the new members
to Monkey Tales.
This issue will feature Linus, Garner and
Pumpkin.
Linus, a 7 year old Rhesus Macaque, is a
former illegal pet from New York, who arrived
in June 2001.
Linda and I spent countless hours over the next
few weeks worrying about him and wondering if he
was even still alive.
Despite his ordeal, this sweet monkey is doing
just fine.
Garner, a 9 year old Java Macaque, arrived in
October 1998. He is another former pet whose
owners found that taking care of him was too
much of a responsibility. They did, however,
opt to drive from Iowa so they could say their
final goodbyes at his new residence. After they
left, he stared out the window and cried for
days. Garner was very small for his age. New
plans had to be made as to where to house him,
as he was too small to be placed with the monkeys
that Linda originally had in mind to be his
cagemates. It was decided that he would be kept
in an indoor cage with outdoor access along with
Tasha, a Lesser Spot Nose Guenon. He was a rowdy,
hyper little monkey and was a lot for Tasha to
put up with. One of his favorite activities was
stealing her blanket and taking it outdoors.
Tasha was able to help Garner with his
socialization skills. By the following summer
he had grown enough to be placed with the larger
monkeys. They have all become a family. They
depend completely on each other. Garner's former
owners have not abandoned him, they do contribute
for his care and well being.
Pumpkin is a 9 year old Java Macaque, who
arrived in June 2001. He was originally a
resident of Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge
(http://www.btn-wildlife.org) in Orlando,
Florida. He had been confiscated at 3 years
old, from an Orlando owner who did not have
a proper license. After he had been at the
sanctuary for 2 years, it was decided that
it was in his best interest to be with other
monkeys. This was not an easy decision to
reach as he was loved very much by his former
caregivers. Three women drove straight through,
for 24 hours from Florida to Oklahoma, bringing
all of his toys with them. They wanted to make
the trip as stress free as possible and also
wanted to make sure that he was going to be safe
at Mindy's. If they were even the least bit
apprehensive after meeting Linda and checking out
the sanctuary they were going to take him back to
Florida with them. They were thrilled to see his
large enclosure, which was much larger than he
was accustomed to. When they saw how well he was
getting along with the other monkeys, they knew
the right decision had been made. He very quickly
figured out that the best seat was in between 2
other monkeys. This way you can get groomed on
both sides at the same time. Instead of the tears
Pumpkin's former caregivers had all anticipated,
when they left, they left with smiles.
Mindy's could really use some volunteers. The
sanctuary is located in Newcastle, Oklahoma.
This is near Oklahoma City. If you live in the

Come meet the monkeys, see what they were
and who they have become.
This issue will feature Tasha and Chimi.
Tasha is an approximately 18 year old
Lesser Spot-Nose Guenon, who arrived in
July 2000. Linda is not sure how many
owners this poor girl has had, in the
13 years prior to her arrival. We do know
that at some point when she was very young
she was kept as a display at a used car
dealership. Evidently, it was thought that
this would help generate customers. She had
been kept tethered with a leash and collar
for an unknown number of years. Her last
owners had her for only 3 years when she
was given to Mindy's. When Tasha was picked
up she had a choke chain wired around her
neck, with one end dangling. Tasha had to
pick up and carry the chain to walk. Her
owners stated that when they tried to remove
it she would attempt to bite. Not wanting to
be bitten, they left it on. When it was
removed, both hide and hair came with it.
There is a scar for every link of that chain
circling her neck. Before finding the perfect
best friend for Tasha she babysat several new
arrivals. Amazingly, she had never seen another
monkey before and yet was able to help newcomers
adjust. Thanks to Tasha, they learned how to
socialize. Tasha does not like to have her
picture taken. When Linda approaches with
the camera, Tasha jumps up and down and runs
at the camera. Now her life is shared with Chimi.
Chimi is a Campbell's Guenon, who arrived in
October 2001. She was originally placed at
Mostly Monkeys Sanctuary
http://www.mostlymonkeys.org in California.
It is in the monkeys best interest to be
paired with another of the same species.
Sometimes in order to accomplish this a
monkey is transferred to another sanctuary.
Chimi is a former pet who was loved very
much for 16 years. Since California law
does not allow primates to be owned, she
was confiscated and sent to Mostly Monkeys.
Not having a human for companionship was a
major adjustment. She now had to learn to
rely on another monkey. She has adapted
wonderfully. Tasha and Chimi could not be
closer. They enjoy gazing out their window,
watching everything that is going on.

Come Meet The Monkeys, see what they were,
who they have become and what they are up
to now.
This issue will feature Chico, Sybill,
Maxine and Alex. They share their enclosure
with Magan, Bobby Mann and JJ who were
featured in the February 2005 issue of Monkey
Tales.
Chico, a former pet, is a 7 year old Cinnamon
Capuchin who arrived in March 2004. He is a
very hyper monkey and likes to scream. Chico's
best friend is Sybill. They spend time grooming
and chasing one another. His favorite food is
monkey chow soaked in juice. Since he is now
eating a proper diet he has gained some weight.
He likes toys that he can hold in his hand.
While holding them he spins in circles.
Sybill is a White Front Capuchin who was only
3 years old when she arrived at Mindy's in
April, 1999. She had been confiscated from her
owner when she was found kept in a small bird
cage. She was kept at a zoo in Ohio until the
court case was over. In order to keep her in
the cage, she was chained to the bars with a
collar around her waist. As her owners were
frightened of her she was never allowed outside
the cage. In order to remove the collar, it had
to be cut off. Sybill also suffers psychologically
from her ordeal. She suffers from some type of
flare ups, where all of a sudden she just starts
screaming. When this happens, one of the other
capuchins will rush right over to comfort her
until she calms down.
Maxine and Alex arrived in July 1998, as
the result of a divorce. While tensions
were getting worse in their house they were
becoming extremely stressed. There was not
enough time to be spent with them, so they
were spending more and more time alone. From
infants they were kept in small cages and
were not able to move around very much. When
they first arrived a small enclosure was set
up for them. They had no idea how to climb.
Every time they tried, they would get just
a couple of feet off the ground and fall.
As they were not high up, no one was injured.
They are now both excellent climbers. Both
Maxine and Alex still suck their thumbs.
Maxine is a White Front Capuchin who was
only 3 years old when she arrived. When
she arrived she did not have much of an
interest in toys. Alex is Maxine's best
friend.
Alex is a White Front Capuchin who was
only 2 years old when he arrived. Like
Maxine, he did not have much interest
in toys. A branch with some leaves on
it can entertain him for hours. There
is a really cute picture in the
yahoogroups photo album of Alex, Maxine
and Magan, where Alex is covering his
mouth, as if to say Hurry Up And Take
The Picture.
When Chico first arrived, he did not get
along with Magan. Now everyone in this
troop gets along well. Chico does
somersaults and tumbles with JJ. Linda
is happy to report that Maxine and Alex
have realized just how much fun playing
with toys can be. For some monkeys this
just takes longer than with others.
Everyone enjoys playing by themselves
with toys, just as much as they enjoy
an exciting game of tag. Sometimes,
Bobby Mann, Alex and JJ can be seen just
chasing each other around in circles,
and having a ball doing it. They all
enjoy playing with and bouncing any
type of balls. Like many of the monkeys
at Mindy's, they all love riding toys.
They all love to sit and groom and be
groomed. Sybill loves Brazil nuts. When
Linda appears, Sybill will climb all over
her enclosure, watching, just to see if
Linda is coming to give her a treat.

This issue will feature Magan, Bobby Mann
and JJ who share their enclosure with Chico,
Sybill, Maxine and Alex who will be featured
in the March 2005 issue of Monkey Tales.
Bobby Mann is a 16 year old White Front
Capuchin. He had been used to entertain
at children's parties in Texas. When being
surrendered to Mindy's in July 1993, at
the age of 5, his owner stated that he was
not a nice monkey. Since he has been at
Mindy's, it has been found that he is a
VERY NICE MONKEY. He has a very important
self appointed job. Bobby Mann is the
official taste test monkey. He will taste
his apple or what ever treat is set out,
then becomes very vocal calling all of the
others to come and see what he has found.
He chatters loudly until everyone arrives.
Magan is a White Front Brown Capuchin who
was born in April 1996. She came from a
very loving home in April 1998. Her owner,
a young woman, was diagnosed with terminal
cancer, and had to find someone who would
care for her pet with the same love that
she would have liked to be able to provide.
Hopefully, she received a great deal of
comfort knowing that Magan was going to
be spending the remainder of her life at
Mindy's. Magan is the official lock checker.
Whenever someone has been inside cleaning
her enclosure, she always rushes over to
shake the lock, just hoping that someone
has left without double checking that it
was secure. In almost 7 years, she has
never found it unlocked, but she keeps
trying. If you get too close to the cage
while working, Magan loves to reach
through the wire and try to pinch you.
JJ is an 9 year old White Front Black
Capuchin who arrived in April 2002.
His former owners contacted Linda on
a Saturday night, stating that he was
getting aggressive, and they had no
place to keep him. By Sunday he was
at Mindy's. After being fed an improper
diet he was extremely thin when he
arrived. He has now begun to put on
some weight. He seems to be right at
home with the other capuchins. Bobby
Mann and Alex took to him immediately.
Bobby Mann and JJ spend hours grooming
each other. One of JJ's favorite past
times is laying on a platform in front
of the fan that is kept circulating in
the monkey house when it is warm.
Everyone in this troop gets along so well
together. When JJ arrived he was accepted
immediately. He has such a wonderful
personality. JJ and Bobby Mann are the
best of friends. They even sleep together,
sharing a blanket in one house, while the
others sleep together in a second house.
During the day, all of the monkeys go back
and forth from house to house. Due to all
of the jumping, running and climbing that
JJ does, he is no longer thin, and is hard
to tell apart from Alex. Everyone enjoys
playing by themselves with toys, just as
much as they enjoy an exciting game of tag.
Sometimes, Bobby Mann, Alex and JJ can be
seen just chasing each other around in
circles, and having a ball doing it. They
all enjoy playing with and bouncing any
type of balls, especially JJ. Magan loves
to play with anything that makes noise.
The more noise she can make, the happier
she is. Like many of the monkeys at Mindy's,
they all love riding toys. They also love
to sit and groom and be groomed. They have
a favorite snack, Welch's Fruit Snacks.
These are made with real juice and are
in the shape of the actual fruit. Their
favorites are Concord Grape and Strawberry.

The Third Annual Toy Drive was a success. When
the monkeys receive toys, the toys are placed
in their enclosures while they are locked in
a separate area. They pace back and forth in
anticipation, seeming to tell Linda to hurry
up. When they reenter their enclosure there
are squeals of delight.
Enough toys were donated for each monkey to
receive more than one toy. Enough basketballs,
footballs and soccer balls were received for
every enclosure to receive at least one. The
capuchins received a lot of plastic balls.
Also donated were tennis balls, rattles,

Mindy's has the largest enclosures of any
Primate Sanctuary, complete with wooden shelves
and perches for the monkeys to sit on and climb
to. Please bear in mind that many of the pictures
are taken at an angle, as the monkeys can be
sitting as high as 15 feet up in the air. This
could make the enclosures look smaller than they
actually are.

Monkey Tales
Come meet the monkeys, see what they were and
who they have become.
This issue will feature Gabby and George.
Gabby is an 11 year old Patas Monkey who is
a former pet that arrived at Mindy's in
September 1999. When originally purchased, his
owners were told that he was a baby Capuchin.
They were not prepared for the much larger Patas
Monkey, which is a relative of the baboon. As he
continued to grow, he became more aggressive. His
former owners realized that he was not an ideal
pet. They loved him very much, and only wanted to
do what was best for him. They began looking for
a zoo or a sanctuary to take him. No one would
accept him. Finally, a zoo gave them Mindy's
phone number. Arrangements were immediately made
for Gabby's arrival. Wanting to make the trip as
stress free as possible, his former owners opted
to drive him the 13 hours from Indiana to Oklahoma.
This also gave them the opportunity to reassure
themselves that they had made the right decision
for Gabby. As Patas Monkeys need a lot of space
to run, a new long enclosure needed to be built.
This enclosure was not going to be ready until
October. He would be spending his first month in
a temporary enclosure. Imagine his surprise when
first coming from a 4x4x8 enclosure in his previous
home to his temporary enclosure, 10x10x10 and then
on to his permanent enclosure measuring 35x10x15.
One of his favorite past times is playing with the
dogs that also call Mindy's home. They love to race
back and forth the entire length of the enclosure.
As you can tell, Gabby gets lots of exercise. Now
all that was needed to make life complete was
another Patas for companionship. Gabby's owners
have not abandoned him, they do still contribute
to his care and well being.
Along comes George, a Patas Monkey, who was
born on October 25, 1995 and arrived at Mindy's in
November 2000. He is a former pet from New Jersey,
purchased from a pet store. He was loved very much
by his former owners. The only reason that he
needed to be relocated to a sanctuary was that his
family was moving and could not take him with them.
He now had a major adjustment to make. In his
former home, he had a room of his very own and
would sit in his owners lap in the evenings to
watch television. George could not understand
why he was being put into a dog crate and shipped
somewhere strange. His entire world was being
turned upside down. His trip to the sanctuary was
extremely stressful for him. He missed his flight,
and ended up spending the night at the airport in
New Jersey. After missing his first flight, he also
ended up missing his connections. His food supply
was not meant to last this long. Needless to say,
he ran out of food and water, arriving very hungry
and thirsty. George was castrated at a very young
age, so he will never develop the muscle tone of a
full grown male. Since his arrival, he has gained
weight and made a new best friend in Gabby. He
has substituted his fondness of television and
cuddling with his owner for more monkey type
activities, like playing chase games and grooming
his cagemate.
George loves fruit, more than vegetables. He does
however like sweet potatoes. He prefers his baked,
not raw. His favorite fruit is grapes. He also
enjoys bananas and apples.
Gabby is partial to red headed women. When he sees
one, he starts jumping up and down and throws his
basketball across the cage. Then he will begin to
smack a can around that is in his enclosure. It
quickly goes from one end on the cage to another
as he hits it. All this is done to show off for
the woman.

We would like to welcome the new members to
Monkey Tales.
This issue will feature Katy.
Katy, a Rhesus Macaque, arrived in September 2004,
at 3 years old. She was driven from Missouri to
Mindy's by her former owners. She shares her new
life with Ginger, Tommy and Katy Jo, who were
featured in the July 2004 issue of Monkey Tales.
You can view previous issues by visiting:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/monkeytales
Since there was already a Katy in this enclosure,
Linda refers to this Katy as Katy Two and Katy Jo
as Katy One. When Katy arrived, she was a picky
eater. Watching the other macaques enjoying their
fruits and vegetables encouraged her to do so.
She has now put on some weight. At first, she did
not enjoy eating her dry biscuits (monkey chow).
These are a very important part of a monkeys diet,
as they are filled with vitamins. It has taken
3 months, but now she is finally eating them.
Once Linda is able to get the monkeys to eat the
biscuits, they seem to enjoy them. Katy's favorite
food is pecans. She enjoys swinging and stuffed
animals. Her best friend is Tommy.
HELP MAKE THE THIRD ANNUAL CHRISTMAS MONKEY TOY DRIVE
A SUCCESS!!
Wouldn't you like to make a monkeys Christmas dreams
come true? Our goal is to collect one toy for every
monkey and a group toy for every enclosure. The toys
do not have to be new, just in good condition. What
many people do not realize is that monkeys enjoy the
same toys that human children do. You just have to
make sure that the toy is sturdy enough to be played
with by a strong child. For example, Fisher Price or
Playskool, busy boxes or riding toys make excellent
choices for them. The toys cannot be something that
can easily be taken apart. As you are putting away
the backyard toys, if your child will outgrow them
by next summer, consider sending them to the monkeys.
Keep this in mind as you are getting rid of the old
toys to make room for the new Christmas ones. They
also enjoy flat bed sheets that will have plenty of
knots tied in them. They drag them around and hide
underneath them. When they peek out to see if anyone
is watching, another monkey will quickly pounce on
them, and then the wrestling fun begins. Spray them
with a little perfume and they enjoy them all the
more. Monkeys love to play with pails and shovels.
Sometimes out of necessity, dust pans and containers
are substituted. They like to fill up the pails with
mulch from the floor of their enclosures. Kong toys
for dogs are used as enrichment items. Monkeys also
enjoy playing with balls such as basketballs, mini
basketballs and tennis balls (they can only have tennis
balls made for dogs). Many of the monkeys enjoy playing
with baby rattles. Even some musical instruments, such
as an xylophone, make good gifts.
If you would like to donate a toy as a gift, please
indicate this when the donation is made. A gift
notification will be sent to that special someone
letting them know the donation was made in their name.
Just to give you an idea of what monkeys play with,
please visit:
http://www.amomentintimedonations.freeservers.com/photo6.html
where you will see photos of the monkeys enjoying themselves
with their toys. For example:
1) Linus and his Kong Toy.
2) Indigo and his pail.
3) Cookie and Rowdy with their Kong Toys.
4) Nona with her Kong Toy.
5) Katy Jo enjoying herself on her toddler's swing.
6) Cookie and a Barbie Jeep.
7) Detroit has climbed up high, just as soon
as he was given a basketball. He did not want
to share his new found treasure.
Please have your toys delivered to Mindy's by
December 15, 2004
Toys can be mailed to:
