Dogs who can swim can take a dip in the lagoon next to the Redwood Shores Dog Park in Redwood City:
<http://home.earthlink.net/~ejlmp/redwoodshoresdr.html>. There is a water hose in the big dog section of the park to wash your dog off after the dip.

The path along the bay next to the Seal Point Dog Park in San Mateo has two areas to walk to the edge of the bay for dogs to take a dip in the bay but timing with low and high tides will be necessary because you don’t want the tide to take your dog away if Fido is not a good swimmer.

There are more than three areas next to the park to clean off your dog: See <http://home.earthlink.net/~ejlmp/sanmateodp.html>.   The depth of the bay water averages around four feet deep except for the deep water shipping channel in the middle of the bay however this deep channel is about 4-5 miles from waters edge.

How clean is the bay water? I’ve taken samples of the bay water near shore and under a microscope,  bay water samples near the waters edge show very little particulate matter (depending on the tide and weather). The San Francisco Bay is also free of creek water micro organisms present in the creeks and rivers that flow into the bay and these creek water micro organisms are visible at low power under the microscope (10x).

If you visit this park in San Mateo at low tide, you will see in one area next to Ryder Park at least 13 shopping carts and other debris stuck in the low tide mud.  You will want to avoid this area for a dog dip. Other areas along the shores have no shopping carts or other hazards for a dog swim. The two areas to enter the bay water are also used by surfers and have steps to the water’s edge.
