I have a friend who is bit obsessed.  More in terms of using them than in
collecting.  You can find his contact info on his web site and he might be able
to help you.  If it vintage or historical or you need it priced that is probably
not his thing but as far as names and types he knows a great deal.  The web site
is www.butternutstables.ca .

Does anyone either collect bits or know of a resource I can use to get more info
about a bit I have? I would like to sell it but need to know more about it
first. Thanks, Laura

Great survey to participate in. AHP is the umbrella association for all equine
publications in America. Christy

Equine Industry Survey Launched by American Horse Publications
The American Horse Publications (AHP) is conducting an Equine Industry Survey
to gauge participation trends in the U.S. equine industry. In addition, the
survey seeks to gather information regarding the most important issues facing
the industry.
Dr. C. Jill Stowe is providing consulting services for data collection and
analysis to the AHP. Dr. Stowe is an assistant professor of Agricultural
Economics at the University of Kentucky.
The survey is sponsored by Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health and Pfizer
Animal Health.
Those eligible to participate in the survey are men and women, 18 years of age
and older, who currently own, manage, or lease at least one horse and live in
the United States.
The survey closes January 15, 2010.
This study is anonymous; this means that no one, not even members of the
research team, will be able to associate information you give with responses.
When the survey results are tallied, only aggregated results will be presented.
“The AHP’s member publications, Web sites, and newsletters reach nearly 3
million people involved in the horse industry in the United States and around
the world,” said Kimberly S. Brown, current AHP president. It was Brown who
proposed the survey, which was backed unanimously by the AHP board.
“We have been through a rough year, and there are many stories out there of
unwanted horses and the decline of the horse industry,” noted Brown. “But I
think the real story is the wanted horses and their owners who are still strong
despite the economic downturn.
“We think this is a great opportunity for us to use our collective resources
and reach into the horse industry to get answers about how we are doing today,
how we think we’ll be doing in the near future, and what we are concerned
about in our industry.
“Let’s get 100,000 or more horse owners to participate in this survey!”
said Brown. “We have a wonderful chance to come together to gather information
that can benefit us all, so spread the word!”
“I especially want to thank Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health and
Pfizer Animal Health for sponsoring this survey,” said Brown. “Both of these
companies—and the people behind the companies—are supporters of the horse
industry because of their love of the horse, not just because it’s their
business. And I want to thank Dr. Stowe for being willing to contribute her time
and expertise to ensure we have a legitimate survey with accurate statistical
analysis.”

AHP is a non-profit association that promotes better understanding and
communications within the equine publishing industry; members include
equine-related publications, Web sites, professionals, students, organizations,
and businesses.

This blanket is too big for Jester. When I bought it, the bag said it was a 78.
I used it for 2 Winters before I realized the tag said it was an 81. Having
never used a blanket before I had no clue how it was supposed to fit! I never
did like the way it fit- I thought it was unsafe being so loose!

This was well cared for. There are two small patches that have held up very
well. All the straps and buckles are in good shape.

I have to buy Jester a new blanket as he does not grow much of a Winter coat, so
I have to try to sell this one as I am
BROKE! LOL! I have pictures.

Dividers between horses are half, and are removable. Four escape doors. Fully

I just noticed your co-op plan and thought I'd post, as you seem to be right in
our area. We have first cut currently available from our fields on Salmon Falls
Rd in Rochester NH. Pick up at the barn (Bernard Rd, Rochester) is $4 per bale.
Right now we just have that rather fine, first cut - and because of all the
rain, it was indeed cut a bit late. We expect to have 2cd underway... keep
fingers crossed for us! this week.
If interested, please call Kent 833-1736 - & you are welcome also to pop by to
check quality of hay available. We live in Milton, so, if nearer for you, We
can certainly show you a sample there.
Happy riding all, Nancy in NH

I just found a source (someone actually sent me an e-mail recommending them)
of hay that will deliver all over NH! The hay is stored in wood barns and he has
first and second cut available. Problem is his minimum for delivery is 50 bales!
I can only store about 30 bales and will only need 25 bales a month. Anyone out
there need 25 or more bales a month and want to do a hay co-op? I am pretty
flexible as to where the hay gets delivered- I have a truck and trailer to pick
up the hay.

The bales average 46 1/2 lbs (some bigger a few smaller) with first cut
costing $6.50 and second cut costing 8.50 per bale delivered and stacked in your
barn/storage area. He also has rounds. For those who feed by weight- if you are
paying $5.00 a bale for a 30 lb. bale (like we are) that equals $335.00 a ton.
Using 45 lbs as the bale weight- this guys hay works out to $288.88 per ton for
first cut. If most of his bales run closer to 50-55 lbs like he said- then it is
even less!

He is willing to bring me (us) a couple of sample bales and has a 100% money
back guarantee. He says he wants to bring the sample bales to the pickiest horse
available! He made 57,000 bales of hay last year (with only nine returned) and
he has his hay tested (his protein content runs between 13-13.5%). He also has
references.

His minimum is 50 bales and I was wondering if anyone in the Milton/Wakefield
NH area or East Lebanon, ME areas would be willing to do a monthly delivery
co-op?

I just found a source (someone actually sent me an e-mail recommending them) of
hay that will deliver all over NH! The hay is stored in wood barns and he has
first and second cut available. Problem is his minimum for delivery is 50 bales!
I can only store about 30 bales and will only need 25 bales a month. Anyone out
there need 25 or more bales a month and want to do a hay co-op? I am pretty
flexible as to where the hay gets delivered- I have a truck and trailer to pick
up the hay.

The bales average 46 1/2 lbs (some bigger a few smaller) with first cut costing
$6.50 and second cut costing 8.50 per bale delivered and stacked in your
barn/storage area.

My best tip to avoid deer flies is to not ride first in line. The first horse
in line gets the worst of it!

I haven't been out trail riding for quite sometime but when I did, I found
"Pine" forests to be less buggy. Also you can invest in a bug net for your horse
that goes part way down the neck as well as covering their head and I thought
there also used to be a bug net for humans as well. Good luck!

Hello everyone, I was wondering if anyone else is having troubles with deer
flies? Every time i go out to ride they are all over me and my horse. I put bug
stuff on us right before we go out but it does not work.

I live in Wakefield NH and was wondering if there were any trails near by? I
know there are a lot of horses on either side of me. Where do you all go to ride
or do you all ride in indoors?

I posted a few pictures of me and my horses. I have had Doc for almost 2 years
now and just got Kit the end of march.

Thank,

Candy
