Hi...I am new to this group. I joined yesterday to get some answers about my
two. I have a fire belly newt and an oregan salamander. The salamander is 3
times the size of the newt. They have lived together for 2 years in a land
water mix..10 gallon tank. In the summer I feed the salamander live bugs. So
the other day I noticed the salamander grabbing and bear hugging the newt. They
were not rolling around or trying to bite but he was squeezing the He!! out of
the newt. I pulled him off. So, he did this a couple of more times, they are
now in two different settings. What were they doing? I am thinking of putting
a female salamander in there for Romeo. They might have just been socializing or
trying to kill each other I do not know...any ideas?

The Roughskinned newt (I guess that's what you mean by oregan salamander?) was trying to mate with the fire bellied newt. It was good that you separated them,...
