New Puppies - the first few days   Message List

If you are looking at purchasing a Papillon or Pomeranian puppy, or
in fact any puppy of a small breed, there are certain Watch-Outs that
can save you headaches during the first days and may even save your
puppy from serious medical condition.

#1. Sugar Water!
Simple as it is, a little sugar in the water for the first few days
will help keep the energy level of your puppy up. This will help
avoid Hypoglycema - a condition arising from low bloodsugar which can
quickly go from shaking to coma and end in death.

#2. Mixing The Food
Try to be aware of what type of food the breeder was raising the
puppies on, and if you do not wish to feed the same food to your
puppy you should consider purchasing a small amount and mixing it in
with your own food. Start with a higher amount of the food that the
puppy is used to, and lessen it over a few days so that by the end of
the first week the puppy has been weaned entirely onto your food.
This will help to lessen the stress on the puppy's stomach, and you
may be rewarded with solid stools instead of the more runny kind.

#3. The Vet Visit
You should always take a new puppy in to see your veterinarian as
soon as possible. You want to be assured that the puppy you receive
is as healthy as the breeder claims, and that the stress of shipping
and changing homes does not lead to serious condition. Take
everything with a grain of salt, from the breeder and from your vet,
and always get a second opinion when it is serious.

Remember - YOU are the one who cares most about your puppy!
