Hi,
I live in Sydney, I have never seen the penguins, however know of their
existence :)
It is a very small colony and the last one on mainland NSW (just happens to
be in Australia's biggest city...) and its exact location is kept as secret
as possible to try and protect them. Tragedy still occurs, about a year ago
a sizable proprtion of the colony was killed by some dogs...
They are protected by State law as an 'endangered population' and there was
talk of making a no boating/no jet skiing zone around them, not sure if it
went ahead. There was some sort of problem with a sea wall too....
The national park is probably the Royal National Park(?) I think some of the
colony sometimes swim down there.
Personally I saw adorable wild Fairy Penguins at Port Stevens which is a few
hours north of Sydney. There are dolphins there too, I saw them on a dolphin
cruise. Their colony is on an offshore island which I think there are tours
to (it's some kind of nature reserve) maybe you could try that. It's more
than a day trip from Sydney though.
In terms of captive penguins, Sydney has Fairy penguins at most large
wildlife parks, there are a big colony at Taronga Zoo as well as some
Fiordland Penguins which washed up and couldn't be released. (Those injured
penguins from the Manly colony end up here too.)
There's a fairly famous 'penguin parade' on Phillip Island in Victoria.
Tasmania should have various penguin viewing opportunities too..

Subject: [Penguins paradise] Ever been to Australia and seen the penguins?
Hello "mates" ;)
I'm thinking of going to Australia on a nice, long holiday in October
or November. My base will be Sydney as I have friends and family
nearby.
I recently read that you're able to see PENGUINS at Manly Point in
Sydneys northern harbour, but when I ask people from nearby Sydney
they've never heard about them :(
Instead there's supposed to be a big nationalpark south of Sydney
where you can find penguins as well.
I thought I'd ask here to see if any of you have either been to
Australia and seen penguins, or just know some thing about penguins
in Australia...?
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Pernille :)
