Princess had been having a lot of trouble breathing the last couple of
weeks, and it was getting worse, so I took her into Julie’s vet on
Tuesday – I couldn’t get an appointment until August 13 with her
regular vet. On the way into the vet, a 10 minute trip, she collapsed
in the van. They took 200 cc of fluid out of her chest, and said that
it was either a fungal infection or lung cancer, judging from the
x-rays. She was on oxygen continuously for the last 2 days - when they
took the O2 off, she'd go into respiratory distress and collapse
within seconds. It took her lungs and chest just 2 days to re-fill
with fluid, and the vets said that she wouldn't survive another chest
tap. I did what I could to maintain her and treat her symptoms until
the lab results came back – no fungal infection. When I showed the
x-rays to a rad-tech who has 30 years of experience, he said that she
had end-stage lung cancer. Apparently cats are great at hiding illness
until the last second, and Princess was no exception – I guess she
wanted to spend every moment she could with me. Because I wasn’t home
during the day a lot, she was over at Julie’s, and Julie said that she
would disappear until I walked in the door, then she would come
running to greet me.

I was there, holding her and petting her and telling her that I loved
her when the end came on Saturday afternoon about 3 PM Pacific time.

I miss her a lot. I miss spoiling her, I miss her curling up with me
at night to sleep, I miss the way she’d sneak into my lap during car
trips, I miss her meow when I’d come in at the end of the day. I fell
in love with her the second I laid eyes on her 6 years ago, and I will
always love her and miss her terribly.

My life has been blessed with the love of a few precious tabbies and tigers, but never such a silver-lined cloud-cat as your beautiful Princess.  Thank you for giving her the life of her dreams.  May your heart heal with each loving, happy memory that whispurrs through your mind on mystical, magical, silent velvet paws.

Oh Ed, I am so very, very sorry that little Princess has gone, what a
terrible loss, she was indeed very beautiful!
I am always a little relieved to at least know that an animal leaves this
world for the next knowing such true love and Princess knew such wonderful
love for 6 years . . . . .
Please take gentle care.

May your heart join the song all creation is singing, sweet dreams little

Sandy, I'm so glad that you remain on PB.

IMO, some of the biggest animal lovers don't have pets -- not because they wouldn't love them, but because they will only have them if they can be the perfect parents to them and have enough energy.  I would never look down on anyone making that choice.

Rabbits are a huge responsibility -- yes, they are fairly easy if you leave them in a cage or hutch, but PB members are not like that.  We treat our bunnies as our kids and with that comes all the stress, worries, financial obligations, etc. Since I adopted Mopsy, I've given up a lot of the things I love.  (well, mostly, I had to give up most of my hobbies when I adopted Goldie & Queenie because having 4 bunnies in 2 separate rooms exponentially increased my time commitments).  I spend a huge amount of money, don't get to do all the travel I'd love to do, etc.  I work long, erratic hours so when I am off I believe my bunnies deserve most of my time. I love my bunnies more than anything in the world, and they have provided many more blessings than other sacrifices I've made.  But you never know what life will bring.  I'm fairly young and healthy and have a job.  When I'm no longer able to care for animals in the way I'd want, who knows how things would change.  (I'd NEVER give up my current crew).  I hope I always have animals in my life because they bring me so much happiness, but I would never question anyone else for making a different decision.

And a P.S. to Judith -- you need to be more careful in your emails --  typo said you were almost 70--- I don't believe it for a minute -- I've seen your pictures.  (-:

I will light our candle for her journey. May the Bridge be filled with catnip.

How very cool! They are very friendly because they have not had much experience with man. :-(

Our previous neighbor worked for NASA JPL and was designing a robotic drilling device to drill down through the ice to take core samples of the ice from millions of years ago. He also designed the electronics on the Mars Rover. Very smart man and a great neighbor, sadly he was also an alcoholic and passed away.

Hi Everyone,

I know you receive messages like this all the time and that every rabbit rescue always seem to be full.  But Bunny Buddies in Houston is in dire need of help right now.  It has been a terrible spring and summer for the bunnies.  We have been overwhelmed with surrender requests and the area shelters are all overflowing and asking us every day for help.  In the past 14 days alone we’ve had 60 surrender requests.  And just this morning, 9 rabbits (2 mothers with 7, 4-5 week old babies) were brought in to one of the shelters we work with.  They don’t have room to keep them.  Altogether we have around 15-20 rabbits in imminent danger of being euthanized at local shelters.  Perfectly healthy bunnies who just want a home.

Bunny Buddies does not have a physical shelter.  We are a network of foster homes and all have taken in extra bunnies over and over again, especially in the last few months.  There is no more room at the inn!

If you or anyone you know could help by taking even one bunny, or if you volunteer for a rabbit rescue that might be able to offer space for one or more bunnies, please let me know ASAP.  We are likely down to a matter of a few days.  We will do everything possible to take care of costs and transport.  We just need to find some homes or rescue spaces.

Unfortunately I’m in Canada visiting family right now and I will only have internet access until Tuesday morning.  Then I won’t be able to access email again until Friday evening.  So if you might be able to help, either email me or if it is after early Tuesday morning please email Bunny Buddies president, Les Wood, at lesrwood@... .  If you are interested in learning about Bunny Buddies (a registered non-profit started by Petbunny’s very own Helen Swann in 1996 along with three others) go to the website at: www.bunnybuddies.org

Thank you, thank you, thank you in advance!  I hope everyone and every bun on PB is doing well.

Having recently moved we have a lot of boxes now but unfortunately Olivia is a little too “hefty” to sit on them.  They are like a single layer cardboard.  Something reinforced like these one you’re talking about at Costco sound perfect.  I’ll have to keep my eye out for them.  Thanks for the suggestion.

Olivia has a plywood 2nd level – I think it is ¼” thick.  It hooks on to one panel of her condo and has two legs made of 2”x2” wood.  It has worked for years for my little bunnies but under Olivia it is bowing considerably! J  I’m going to have to put support bars under it soon.  But I do LOVE my big girl!

If your bunny is a bit too generously endowed to make safe/comfy use of the wonderful Cottontail Cottage and similarly constructed cardboard playbox pieces, keep your eyes open at stores such as Costco.  They offer packing and display cartons for customers to use instead of bags, and some of these cartons are perfectly adaptable.  This morning's addition to my outdoor play-yard disposable pieces is double walled corrugated cardboard throughout, even the floor (which I invert to become the roof), it measures 12 inches high, 16 wide and 24 inches long, and was formerly used to display packs of organic sweet apple slices.  It has lovely doors and windows already cut and sized nicely for the larger than average bunbod.

Happy recycling!

Princess had been having a lot of trouble breathing the last couple of
weeks, and it was getting worse, so I took her into Julie's vet on
Tuesday - I couldn't get an appointment until August 13 with her
regular vet.
It took her lungs and chest just 2 days to re-fill
with fluid, and the vets said that she wouldn't survive another chest
tap. I did what I could to maintain her and treat her symptoms until
the lab results came back - no fungal infection. When I showed the
x-rays to a rad-tech who has 30 years of experience, he said that she
had end-stage lung cancer. Apparently cats are great at hiding illness
until the last second, and Princess was no exception - I guess she
wanted to spend every moment she could with me. Because I wasn't home
during the day a lot, she was over at Julie's, and Julie said that she
would disappear until I walked in the door, then she would come
running to greet me.

I was there, holding her and petting her and telling her that I loved
her when the end came on Saturday afternoon about 3 PM Pacific time.

I fell

Check out their promise to you America, in large letters on the home page: "Food and Nutrition Information You Can Trust."  Of course, we are talking about an association that already lists among its corporate sponsors the likes of Coca-Cola, candy maker Mars, and Pepsi.  I expect that the next step in Obamacare will be the prez tapping Willy Wonka for Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
Good grief :(

LOL! Our lawnmower just so happens to need repair or replacement ... But the last time the lawn got long, I tried finding people with horses or goats to come "trim" the excess. The bunnies barely made a dent.

Folks around here with hobby herds of goats make good bucks renting them out to clear hillsides and areas that for whatever reason (including recalcitrant mower operators) don't mow easily.  Whoever you have come to munch the meadow, watch the height.  Once grass crops are grazed to about one third their height they may die out, so keep those "doggies" movin' ... (head 'em up, move 'em out, from the ancient TV series, Rawhide)
