Or we could just boycott... I know. I know..... It's already been said
that we all depend on our vehicles..... But that's not entirely true.
Let's be realistic... Many of us could walk and/or bike. It may be a tad
inconvienent, but it wouldn't be too too bad for several of us. How
about this?...... We could all call for a boycott and exclude all of
those who work, or attend school, too far away to arrive at a reasonable
hour by commuting without a vehicle. Hell, for many people, commuting by
foot or bicycle would be faster... It all depends upon the area you're
in. So let's do this.... Let's park the vehicles and say no to gas until
prices drop drastically! I hope no one thinks I'm being a pain. I'm
proposing this as a way to help everyone....human and non-human alike.
I'll explain.... Rescue depends heavily upon the transports that
rescuers arrange. Transports would be almost halted during the boycott,
but the boycott would benefit rescue in the end.... Because, when prices
fall, transporters will be better capable of meeting the demand of
carrying companion animals from here to there....to their rescues,
fosters, and fur-ever homes. As things stand now, gas is so expensive
that I've heard of transporters "taking a break" or "cutting back".
Let's boycott gasoline.... A boycott will help us AND our non-human
friends!!! Nobody will blame you if you can't participate.....if you
can't participate then atleast follow the plan below, but, for all who
CAN participate.... LET'S DO IT! LET'S BOYCOTT!!!!!!!

I'm not suggesting a "gas out day". I'm suggesting a boycott until
prices fall.
I'm not basing my suggestion upon some kind of myth or urban legend.
Boycotts can work. It depends upon the level of participation involved
and how long the participation continues. Boycotts have been successful
in the past with regards to other issues. Why not this? Snopes is not
the end all be all of "factual information", and people who rely too
heavily upon snopes are in no different a place than those who rely upon
other sources for information. You can't just take any piece of
information and "run it past" snopes. If I suggested boycotting a
grocery store until they stopped purchasing product X from supplier X,
would you check snopes? Do you do that with each email alert you
receive? I called for a gas boycott. I didn't forward some off the wall
nonsense. I merely called for a boycott. People can do it or not do
it..... Their choice. It's not an urban legend any more than it would be
an urban legend for me to call for a boycott against a resturant, a
store, or some other company. It's just something I suggested.

Animal rights protesters will assemble for a 'Victory Gathering' after
news that a farm breeding guinea pigs for medical research is to
close.

Hundreds of campaigners will march through the streets of Burton on
Trent, Staffordshire later, to mark the announcement made by the
owners of Darley Oaks Farm.

Meanwhile, religious leaders are appealing to the protesters to return
the remains of Gladys Hammond which were stolen from a cemetery last
year.
...
Charles Clarke, the Home Secretary has banned an American animal
rights activist from entering the UK to speak at the event.

Dr Steve Best was denied a visa on the grounds that his presence was
"not conducive to the public good," according to the Home Office.

Sept. 3 - Pets now declared “family members!”

September 3, 2005 : 7:55 PM ET

As stranded people in New Orleans continue to be evacuated out of more
dangerous areas of the city into temporary housing in Jefferson Parish,
they are now allowed to take their pets with them on the buses.

The ban on pets was lifted Saturday, according to Bert Smith, director
of animal services for Jefferson Parish, which is just across the bridge
from the center of the city.

The change in policy comes too late for all of the people who have
already had to give up their pets as they were evacuated, but it will
help animal control officials to concentrate on rescuing those pets who
were left behind.

Smith had been prepared to accept animals from these evacuees at the
West Bank animal shelter in Marrero, Louisiana, near New Orleans.

Now that Smith no longer needs to do this, he will have more space to
continue to rescue animals found on the city streets, particularly in
those areas where the buses have been loading. He plans on resuming this
effort Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, Paul Berry, director of operations for Best Friends, is
trying to coordinate the reopening of the East Bank animal shelter, also
in Jefferson Parish. Berry has procured a generator to help power fans
to cool the facility down, and plans to transport water in for the
animals.

More space was made available at the West Bank shelter Saturday as Smith
was able to evacuate some of the animals to a temporary holding area at
the fairgrounds in Franklinton, Louisiana. A small team from Best
Friends in Atlanta is caring for the hundreds of animals at that
location, before they can be moved to the St. Francis Sanctuary in
Tylertown, Mississippi.

The St. Francis Sanctuary is currently full with 600 animals, but a Best
Friends team is due to arrive soon to build addition fencing to
accommodate more animals.

Best Friends is looking for experienced shelter workers to help staff
the above shelters and sanctuaries. If you are interested in
volunteering, please call 435.644.2001 x398.

In other news:

-- On Saturday, Smith rescued numerous animals – mostly birds and
pocket pets – from two Petco stores in the parish that had been
evacuated.

-- The North Shore Animal League is organizing an effort to transport
between 40 and 60 animals from the fairgrounds at Franklinton to go
north for adoption. The league is also working on mobilizing trucks to
help evacuate animals from New Orleans.

-- PAWS Chicago is planning on sending a fleet of adoption vans to the
St. Francis Sanctuary, to transport animals to foster homes near
Chicago.

Supplies for the St. Francis Sanctuary can be sent to:

Pet owners refusing to leave homes

Rescuers say efforts disorganized

By SANDY DAVIS

Advocate staff writer

NEW ORLEANS -- David Woodsum poked his head out the attic window of his
flooded house on Gladiolus Street on Tuesday and yelled at the men
sitting in the flat bottom boat.

"I'm not leaving," Woodsum said. "I won't leave my two cats."

Pets appeared to be the No. 1 reason many of the estimated 10,000
residents still holed up in their flooded homes are refusing to leave.

"I don't know why the government won't let us take these people's pets
out," said Steve Miller of Dutchtown, a volunteer who navigated his flat
bottom boat down the flooded streets trying to persuade residents to
leave.

"But FEMA has told us we cannot take the pets. They told that we could
not take one cat or dog in our boats," Miller said. "It's a stupid rule.
More people are going to die because of that."

Miller was one of about 40 other men from the Baton Rouge area who for
the past five days have been hauling boats to New Orleans daily to try
and help with the rescue effort in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
They were told Tuesday that search-and-rescue efforts would end in the
next few days.

"Please come with us," Duke Ramey, one of the men in Miller's boat,
yelled at Woodsum. "No one is going to bring you more food and water.
The boats and helicopters aren't coming back. This could be your last
chance to get out."

But Woodsum was steadfast.

"I'm not leaving my pets here to die," Woodsum yelled at the men in the
boat.

"But if you don't come with us, you might die," Ramey said.

Woodsum was undeterred by the arguments. He refused to leave and Miller
had no choice but to start the boat and move on.

"I just want to help," Miller said as his voice boomed out in the eerily
empty, flooded streets.

"Search and Rescue," he yelled at no one. "If you want to leave your
home, please come out."

Most of the people rescued Tuesday were men.

As the boats floated down the streets, bumping over elevated railroad
tracks and bobbing grocery carts, Miller said his experience as a
volunteer has been "100 percent frustrating."

"Everyone of these men have had enough of bureaucracy," Miller said.
"And that's saying it nicely."

Miller said he answered a call from the Louisiana Department of Health
and Hospitals on Friday to bring his boat and join the search-and-rescue
efforts in New Orleans.

"I called everybody I knew and so did a lot of other people," Miller
said.

They were all told to bring their boats and meet at Jimmy Swaggart
Ministries in Baton Rouge late Friday afternoon.

"We ended up with two miles worth of boats," said Leon Tarnto, one of
the Baton Rouge area volunteers. "We had 92 boats and more than 200 men
who volunteered."

And that's where the good news ended.

"This is one of the biggest fiascos I've ever seen," Tarnto said. "There
were no leaders, nobody knew what to do or where to go. We ended up
sitting on the sides of roads for hours."

Every day since they joined the effort, the men have met at one of
Swaggart Ministries' buildings at 2 a.m.

"I thought we were going to get an early start," Tarnto said. "Instead
we sit there for hours doing nothing, and then we sit on the side of the
road in New Orleans doing nothing. These people have no idea what
they're doing and that includes FEMA and DHH."

Each day, the number of Baton Rouge area boats and volunteers has
dwindled until there were only 22 boats Tuesday.

"Why should they waste their time," Miller said. "We want to help, but
these government people just don't get it. It's so frustrating."

Each day, the volunteers said they were turned away from the rescue
effort for one reason or another.

"We went over to Chalmette one day where they desperately needed help,
and we were turned away because some inmates escaped," Ramey said. "Who
cares? Why should that stop us from going in there? That parish (St.
Bernard) estimated there were 7,500 stranded in their homes. Nobody's
been able to talk to them, and we get turned away."

Miller said that one day he became so angry he broke away from the FEMA
sanctioned volunteers and, along with his brother, Mike Miller, searched
Orleans Street.

"We hooked up with the military," Steve Miller said. "They're the only
people that know what they're doing. We rescued about 25 people that
day."

And Tuesday, the volunteers were angry because they were sent into an
area that already had been searched.

"This has been the greatest waste of human resources I've ever seen,"
Ramey said.

"We've basically committed a mutiny," Tarnto said. "We've left DHH and
we're working with the military."

With soldiers and paramedics in the boats, the Baton Rouge area
volunteers continued scouring the flooded streets of northeast New
Orleans.

"We're glad to see you," said Thomas Richardson who has been at his
Verbena Street home since Katrina swept through the city.

"It's time to leave," Richardson said. "I have to say, I thought we were
better off at home than at one of those shelters."

Richardson and his brother, Gary Richardson, decided to leave once their
pets, including dogs, cats and a bird, were rescued.

"Some volunteer group showed up this morning and said they would take
our pets," Richardson said.

After the Richardsons were dropped off safely, Miller took his boat out
again.

The boat slipped past a skinny, brown-haired dog trapped on the flooded
roof of a small building. The thirsty dog lapped the polluted flood
waters.

"That dog won't live long," Ramey said, watching it drink.

As Miller yelled for residents to come out, sometimes the only answer
from the vacant homes was the yelp of a dog that had been left behind.

"Man, this is sad," Miller said.

As the men turned down Clover Street, Robert Jones sat on the front
porch of his flooded home.

"I'm not leaving," Jones said. "I'm doing just fine."

Two dogs played on the porch.

"There's no way I'm leaving my dogs," Jones said. "Thanks for stopping,
but I'm not leaving."

Telling these exasperated citizens of our country to abandon the animals
they care for so deeply is, in fact, illegal. Chapter 14, Section
102.1(A)(1)(d) of Louisiana’s Revised Statutes, for example, states
that anyone who abandons an animal is guilty of the crime of cruelty to
animals.

Please politely call on Michael Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland
Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response and head of FEMA, to
immediately order his subordinates and their brave volunteers to
evacuate animals with their human families, effective today, from areas
affected by Katrina. Tell Mr. Brown that in these United States, we can
and must do better for our citizens and their animals:

> Pet owners refusing to leave homes

> Rescuers say efforts disorganized

> By SANDY DAVIS

> Advocate staff writer

> NEW ORLEANS -- David Woodsum poked his head out the attic window of his
> flooded house on Gladiolus Street on Tuesday and yelled at the men
> sitting in the flat bottom boat.

> "I'm not leaving," Woodsum said. "I won't leave my two cats."

> Pets appeared to be the No. 1 reason many of the estimated 10,000
> residents still holed up in their flooded homes are refusing to leave.

> "I don't know why the government won't let us take these people's pets
> out," said Steve Miller of Dutchtown, a volunteer who navigated his
> flat
> bottom boat down the flooded streets trying to persuade residents to
> leave.

> "But FEMA has told us we cannot take the pets. They told that we could
> not take one cat or dog in our boats," Miller said. "It's a stupid
> rule.

> "I just want to help," Miller said as his voice boomed out in the
> eerily
> empty, flooded streets.

> Miller said he answered a call from the Louisiana Department of Health
> and Hospitals on Friday to bring his boat and join the
> search-and-rescue
> efforts in New Orleans.

"Instead
> we sit there for hours doing nothing, and then we sit on the side of
> the
> road in New Orleans doing nothing.

> Miller said that one day he became so angry he broke away from the FEMA
> sanctioned volunteers and, along with his brother, Mike Miller,
> searched

"I have to say, I thought we
> were
> better off at home than at one of those shelters."

> Richardson and his brother, Gary Richardson, decided to leave once
> their
> pets, including dogs, cats and a bird, were rescued.

Behind the smiling face of Ronald McDonald lies the
reality - McDonald's only interest is money, making profits from whoever and
whatever they can, demonstrating irresponsibility and lack of concern for public
health, human and animal rights, and the global environment.

--------------------------------------------------------

Short history: McDonald's Corporation, founded in 1955,
opened its first restaurants outside of the USA in 1967.

In 1993, McDonald's and Texaco opened a restaurant,
convenience store and fueling facilities on a single site for the the busy
consumer.

In 1996, McDonald's and Disney announced a deal giving
McDonald's exclusive rights to use characters from Disney films in its
promotions around the world for 10 years.

Activities: McDonald's now has over 30.000 stores in 119
countries. The company claims it serves 47 million people a day and that a new
store opens somewhere in the world every seven hours.

Bush donor: From 2000 till now, McDonald's has given
US$820,300 to the Republican Party.

Promoting unhealthy food: McDonald's spend over two
billion dollars each year on advertising its junk food - high in fat, sugar and
salt, and low in fibre and vitamins. A diet of this type is linked with a
greater risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes and other diseases. Their food
also contains many chemical additives, some of which may cause ill-health, and
hyperactivity in children.

Murdering animals: The menus of McDonald's are based on
the torture and murder of millions of animals. Most are intensively farmed, with
no access to fresh air and sunshine, and no freedom of movement. Their deaths
are barbaric. We have the choice to eat meat or not, but the billions of animals
massacred for food each year have no choice at all.

Aggravating the world famine: McDonald's continually
promote meat products, encouraging people to eat meat more often, which wastes
more and more food resources. Vast areas of land in poor countries are used for
cash crops or for cattle ranching, or to grow grain to feed animals to be eaten
in the West. This is at the expense of local food needs.

Damaging the environment: McDonald's use beef reared on
ex-rainforest land - vital for life- preventing its regeneration and forcing
local people to move on to other areas and cut down further trees. Every year
McDonald's use thousands of tons of unnecessary packaging, most of which ends up
littering our streets or polluting the land buried in landfill sites.

Exploiting workers: McDonald's have always been opposed
to Unions and exploit its more than one million mostly young employees around
the world making them work harder and faster in poor safety conditions and
paying them with low wages to keep profits high and wage costs low. Innovations
to increase the workers' speed constantly are installed. Computerised machinery
regulates the pace of work at each station to the precise second: each customer
should be served within 180 seconds...

Coca Cola stand accused of complicity in the
assassination of 8 Sinaltrainal trade union leaders in Colombia since 1990. Many
other leaders have been imprisoned, tortured, forcibly displaced and exiled. Of
course, Coca Cola deny any responsibility for the murders, pointing out that
100s of union leaders are killed every year in Colombia. However, many of
Sinaltrainal's victims were killed inside Coca Cola plants while negotiating
collective agreements. Coca Cola management were reported in the national press
as meeting and contracting members of the AUC death squads to "sort out their
labour problems".

                         Environmental damage in India:

Coca-Cola has illegally occupied a portion of the common
property resources of the village Mehdiganj (India) and was found guilty of
evading payment of land revenue by a local court. Protesters were met at
Coca-Cola's factory gates by about 200 police personnel, sent to "protect" the
plant along with 50 gun-toting private security guards. This was not all for
show-- the demonstrators were beaten up. In yet another community, this time in
Kudus village in Thane district, villagers are forced to travel long distances
in search of water which has dried up in their area as a result of Coca-Cola's
operations.

probably missed out on loads of fun. LOL.
Anyway, I won't be going into the archives in most of the groups....too
time consuming for GPRS.... So email me or re-post if I've missed out on

Today seven animal rights activists appeared in court, in Sweden. All
seven
were arrested on the 15th of September 2005 during three SHAC protests
in
Gothenburg and Malmö. One of the companies targeted by the SHAC
protests
was the infamous Genetic Modification company Bayer (the same company
who
wrongly and falsely who accused British ELP volunteers of being part of
the
ELF).

Following their appearance in court today all seven activists have been
remanded into custody. Five of the prisoners are Swedish, the other two
are
British. All welcome letters of support and therefore please send

International Action needed

What we need to do is show them that by arresting and imprisoning
fellow
activists they have stirred up a hornet's nest. We need AR groups
across
the world to do demos, make phone calls and send emails to customers
and
suppliers of Huntingdon Life Sciences especially during the week of
Sweden 7 Action week 26-30th September. We will not stand idly by
whilst
they keep our friends and colleagues in solitary confinement so please
organise yourselves and your groups and mobilise in support of the
Sweden 7. JUST DO IT!

LSR LISTING ON NYSE BLOCKED FOR NOW
THANKS TO THE NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE

On September 7th, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) made the
unprecedented decision to postpone the listing of Life Sciences Research
(LSR), otherwise know as Huntingdon Life Sciences, from trading on the
"big board".  Although the NYSE never once, either directly or
indirectly, referenced the "threat" of animal rights action as the
reason for their decision, that was exactly the way LSR and their
political and industry cronies chose to spin the story.  Within hours,
statements were broadcast and published worldwide, without an iota of
proof, that pressure from animal rights activists motivated the NYSE's
decision.

At the time of the announced listing, Win Animal Rights (WAR) welcomed
the attention that the potential listing brought to LSR/HLS, a company
that has not paid dividends in years and operates under a cloak of
secrecy and deception.  We know that the NYSE is supposed to guarantee
financial integrity and transparency to countless millions of
investors.  There are so many factors that make us question the
financial integrity and transparency of LSR that we believe it could
have been any one of a number of factors that caused the NYSE to
postpone the listing.

Was it the fact that no commercial bank or insurance company in the
world will deal with them?  Or perhaps the fact that their "Public
Accountant" is a mystery man who does not want to be identified? Or the
fact that their shareholder meetings are held at secret locations in
Panama and subject to cancellation with little or no notice?  Or that
some of their Board members are from third world countries with little
or no relevant industry experience?  Or maybe it is LSR's $79.5 million
debt load?  Any of the above might cause a potential investor to
question further. Is it any wonder that the NYSE wants to take another
look?

Or just maybe, the NYSE considered the very fact that LSR was the object
of a global campaign to shut them down, that caused them to want to take
another look at the listing before moving forward.  This willingness to
investigate further should have been applauded around the world by
thankful potential investors and by those who value our financial
stability and integrity.

Instead, the NYSE has become the object of an intense campaign of
intimidation and harassment that has included no less than a United
States Senate Subcommittee Chairman and no doubt the hard ball pressure
tactics of many of the giant pharmaceutical companies and their industry
lobbying groups.

Let's take a minute to thank members of the NYSE for having the courage
and integrity to stand up to corporate and government bullies.

Please call to thank the NYSE at: 212-656-3000

Contact Ray Pellecchia, Corporate Communications: 212-656-2001
e-mail: rpellecchia@... [mailto:rpellecchia @ nyse.com]

You can send thank you notes to NYSE's President, Catherine Kinney:

e-mail: ckinney@... [mailto:ckinney @ nyse.com]

As long as LSR is kept off of the board, WAR will refocus attention back
on the companies, investors and market makers that contribute to LSRI's
bottom line by continuing to deal in LSRI/HLS blood money.

Again, our thanks to the NYSE.  We will of course be watching
developments as regards LSR with
great interest.

ESA Pombo

The war on the Endangered Species Act has begun. California
Congressman Richard Pombo introduced an "extinction bill" in the House earlier
this week -- and it's just as bad as we feared.

The bill is a nightmare for our threatened and endangered
species, and goes directly against the wishes of the nearly 90% of Americans who
care about protecting them. One provision would end the protection of critical
habitat necessary for the survival and recovery of animals and plants. Another
provision states that taxpayers must pay developers to comply with the
Endangered Species Act, setting up a dangerous precedent of paying people not to
break the law.

Click here to send a free message to your Representative to
let him or her know that you're opposed to this "extinction bill" that would
dismantle the Endangered Species Act.

The Endangered Species Act is a safety net that protects
wildlife, fish, and plants on the brink of extinction. When President Richard
Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act in 1973, he said "Nothing is more
priceless and more worthy of preservation than the rich array of animal life
with which our country has been blessed."

The Endangered Species Act works. Over the past three
decades, the Endangered Species Act has saved species like the bald eagle,
Florida manatee, and key deer from extinction. If Representative Pombo's bill
had been law 31 years ago, not even the bald eagle would have qualified for
listing.

Click here to tell your Representative to stand up for our
endangered animals by voting against the so-called "Threatened and Endangered
Species Recovery Act of 2005."

We owe it to future generations to protect threatened and
endangered species and the places they call home.

We need your help to stop this bill in its tracks! Please
forward this message to at least ten friends, family members and co-workers and
urge them to take action.

Thanks so much for your help,

As amazing as it may sound many people do not realize how easy it is
to LEGALLY stop paying for their groceries! This is how the one hour
television show began for the company whose website is at:
http://www.wrldofproduct.com I thought it was very interesting and
decided to check it out. I am very skeptical by nature so the first
thing I did was check out the company. I contacted the Better
Business Bureau and found that the company has had no complaints
lodged against them, I also contacted Paypal who has verified this
company. They told me that they verified the company's licenses,
bank accounts and other paperwork indicating to them that the
company is legitimate. Then I started asking co-workers and friends
about this program and to my surprise 6 out of the 10 people that I
spoke with were already using this program. They told me how pleased
they were with it and how much money they had saved and are
currently saving. So I decided to sign up for this program on
9/15/05. On 9/22/05 I received my complete membership package and
the fun began. Using their program and the free lifetime membership
that it includes I went to the supermarket ready to make a killing.
The cashier rang up my grocery bill and it came out to $239.87 then
I presented her with the coupons I received from this program and I
saved $223.38 - my final bill was only $16.49! The cashier wasn't
the only one shocked. This program has changed my life!

Dear NRDC BioGems Defender,

The House of Representatives will vote this week on a dangerous bill
that would
strip America's endangered wildlife of many crucial safeguards.

Please make sure that your Representative votes against this disastrous
proposal.

http://www.nrdcactionfund.org/esa/action.asp?step=2&item=53041

If it passes, this legislation would abolish critical habitat
protections for
threatened and endangered species -- a vital part of wildlife recovery
efforts
in our U.S. BioGems and elsewhere around the country -- and exempt the
pesticide industry from key regulations. Large-scale land developers, as
well
as the mining and oil industries, would profit at the expense of our
most
vulnerable wildlife.

Tell your Representative that you oppose this reckless overhaul of the
32-year-
old Endangered Species Act, which has been a life-saving force for
wolves,
grizzly bears, Florida panthers and other imperiled wildlife.

Please go to
http://www.nrdcactionfund.org/esa/action.asp?step=2&item=53041
and send an email or fax letting your Representative know where you
stand on
H.R. 3824.

Thank you for defending endangered wildlife.

Sincerely,

John H. Adams

                               1. Call Your Member of Congress Now. Use our phone

                               2. Ask Five (5) Friends to Help Us Save the
Endangered Species Act. We need 200,000 wildlife supporters to e-mail their
Representatives. More than 155,000 have sent messages so far. Speak up for
wildlife and help us reach our goal!

Forward this message to a friend...

In just 24 hours, the House of Representatives could
vote to gut the Endangered Species Act. Together, we can make sure that doesn't
happen.

Please call your Representative! You may have already
taken action on our website, but your personal call is needed today to send a
powerful message to your Member of Congress about the importance of protecting
endangered species.

Thanks to wildlife supporters like you, more than
155,000 messages in support of the Endangered Species Act have been sent to
Members of Congress. Now we're coming down to the wire, and we need your help.

As you may know, the House Resources Committee passed
Representative Richard Pombo's "Wildlife Extinction" bill late last week (H.R.
3824). The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on the bill tomorrow.

Help save sea otters, black bears and other imperiled
wildlife. Please use our phone action center to call your Representative now.

If passed, the Pombo legislation would carve out huge
loopholes in the Endangered Species Act for greedy developers and pave the way
for more plant and animal extinctions. It would dramatically undermine crucial
protections for the plants, animals and special places that you and I care
about.

Let me tell you about just one of the legislation's
outrageous provisions...

Under a last-minute addition to the bill last Thursday,
endangered species would no longer be protected from the harmful effects of
pesticides under the Endangered Species Act. Under the amendment, the
Environmental Protection Agency would no longer be required to consult with
federal wildlife agencies on approval of pesticides. Pesticide users would also
be exempted from responsibility if the use of a pesticide harms threatened or
endangered species.

Pesticides like DDT played a major role in the decline
of the bald eagle and peregrine falcon. It is estimated that pesticides kill
over 67 million birds in the U.S. every year.

The effects of this provision on wildlife could be
devastating, and humans could be hurt too, as pesticides make their way into our
nation's streams and rivers. Help us preserve environmental protections that
benefit wildlife and people by calling your Representative now.

In the last week alone, more than 15,000 Defenders
supporters like you have sent messages to their Representatives urging them to
vote against Representative Pombo's bill to undermine the Endangered Species
Act.

Overall, more than 155,000 advocates have sent messages
so far. We need your help to reach 200,000! Please take a moment to ask your
friends and family to help save our endangered species -- forward this message
or send a free e-card now.

I want you to know that Defenders of Wildlife is
fighting tooth and nail to protect our endangered species. Because the
Endangered Species Act represents America's commitment to the natural legacy we
leave our children and grandchildren, we've never stopped working to preserve
and improve this critical law and we never will.

Please do what you can to stop the Pombo bill. For over
30 years, the Endangered Species Act has been incredibly successful in
preventing plants and animals from going extinct. If you are a wildlife
supporter, there is no more important message than the one you will send to
protect the Endangered Species Act.

Thank you for all you do to protect our nation's
precious wildlife and special wild places.

                         Best Regards,

The following information comes from an interview with trapper Ardell
Grawe featured on page 32 of the October 2005 edition of Trapper &
Predator Caller magazine. Mr. Grawe’s comments demonstrate that
trappers find animal cruelty to be entertaining. Mr. Grawe then goes on
to explain what his captive wolves would do to animals that walked near
their pen.

THE TRAPPER: Tell us about the badger contest (at a trapper’s
gathering – JM).

GRAWE: It was a big event. Everyone showed up to watch. We'd put a live
badger in a 55-gallon drum cut in half, and put a plywood cover on.
Contestants had to take the cover off, grab the badger, and carry it to
another barrel about 10 feet away.

I always went first. A badger will hunker down, and I'd grab it by the
scruff of the neck and run like hell. I never got bit because the badger
didn't know what was coming. It was in the other barrel before it knew
what hit it. But they wised up after that first time, they knew that
hand was coming in when the plywood came off. The trick was to keep
shaking the badger to keep it disoriented. You had to have strong hands
to keep your grip and shake like mad, holding it out away from your body
at the same time.

THE TRAPPER: Did anyone get bit?

GRAWE: You bet! We wore heavy leather welder's gloves, but the badgers
could bite right through them. One guy had over 60 holes in his hand.
Another guy held the badger against his stomach by mistake. Of course
some guys dropped the badger. There was always a crowd of spectators
around the barrels, about 10 feet out, and you should have seen that
solid wall of people fall back when a dropped badger hit the ground!
They parted like the Red Sea when the badger ran through.

One lady fell, and her grandson ran right over her getting away from the
badger. Sometimes we didn't have a badger, so we'd use a raccoon. Those
things are nasty! You put two hands in, and when the raccoon attacked
one hand, you grabbed it with the other. I'd rather grab a badger any
day.

THE TRAPPER: You raised mountain lions and wolves?

GRAWE: I had four lions, and a pair of wolves raising a litter every
year. I loved those cats, and I was fascinated with the wolves because
of their behavior. The wolf pen was built around a root cellar and went
out into the lake. The fence was 12 feet high because of the deep snow.
The cat pen had a top because they climb. I had another fence 12 feet
away, to keep people back.

THE TRAPPER: How did you feed them?

GRAWE: We had unbelievable jackrabbit populations. After December, we'd
snowmobile out and find herds of from 200 to 1,000 jackrabbits. We'd
rest the .22 over the snowmobile and shoot a pile of them. I used to buy
pickup loads of

jackrabbits from hunters. I would also drag fresh, dead livestock home
behind the pickup with a chain, and a livestock company would deliver
"canker eye" cattle that they couldn't butcher. I'd walk those cattle
into the wolf or lion pen, shoot them and cut them open. You can't
believe the strength of lions and wolves. The wolves can crack cow ribs
with ease. Sometimes I'd find the head, tail and feet of stray dogs in
the wolf pen. The wolves would whine and plead to get the dog up against
the fence, then they'd literally pull the dog through the wire and eat
it. But they never bothered my dogs. In fact, my old female dog would
boss the wolves around. I sometimes put a dead kit beaver in the wolf
pen. They'd eat everything but the pelt, it would look like the beaver
had been skinned by a trapper.

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVE GUTS ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT
Party Line Vote Will Result in Hundreds of Extinctions
Moderate Republicans Rebuffed

In a 229 to 193 vote, falling largely along party lines, the U.S. House
of
Representative passed a bill today undermining the U.S. Endangered
Species
Act. 34 Republicans voted against the bill, 36 Democrats voted for it.

The Endangered Species Act protects 1,300 of America's most endangered
plants and animals. Originally created in 1973, it has a saved over 99%
of
these species from extinction including the Bald Eagle, Grizzly Bear,
Gray
Wolf, Sea Otter, and Grizzly Bear. It has also lived up to its mission
to
"protect the ecosystems upon which endangered species depend" by
preserving
over 200 million acres of essential wildlife habitat from Hawaii to
Maine.

Cynically entitled the "Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act
of
2005" by it author, Richard Pombo (R-CA), the bill systematically
removes
every proven recovery tool from the Endangered Species Act.

"This bill takes a wrecking ball to our nation's most important
wildlife
protection law," said Kieran Suckling, policy director of the Center
for
Biological Diversity. "The Endangered Species Act is the safety net for
America's imperiled plants and animals. The Republican dominated House
of
Representatives have ripped it apart, consigning God's creation to
extinction."

A valiant effort to save the Endangered Species Act was fought by both
Democrats and Republicans. The Center for Biological Diversity
especially
thanks: Jim Saxton (R-NJ), Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD), Sherwood Boehlert
(R-NY),
George Miller (D-CA), Nick Rahall (D-WV), Tom Udall, (D-NM), Jay Inslee
(D-WA), Ed Markey (D-MA), and Raul Grijalva (D-AZ).

Summary of the Bill

- Undermines Species Recovery. Richard Pombo (R-CA) garnered involvement
by
some environmental groups and Democrats by promising to strengthen
protection and recovery standards. At each step in the process of
finalizing
the bill, however, he reduced protections. The day of the final vote,
he
pushed through an amendment to completely eliminate the nominal
protections
he had offered in earlier versions.

"Pombo played a cynical game of bait-and-switch," said Suckling. "He
brought
people in with false promises, announced the support of environmental
groups
to the nation, and then systematically stripped every protection clause
from
his bill."

- Eliminates Habitat Protection. It eliminates all existing and future
critical habitat protections--over 200 million acres of habitat
protections
for species such as the Northern spotted owl, Right whale, Peninsular
big
horn sheep, Steller sea lion, and desert tortoise. Critical habitat is
one
of the most successful provisions of the Endangered Species Act:
species
with critical habitat are recovering twice as fast as species without
it.

"Habitat destruction is the main cause of extinction," said Suckling.
"This
bill sends conservation back to the stone age. It eliminates the most
important, most scientifically-based, most successful approach to
protecting
ecosystems."

- Exempts Pesticides from Environmental Review. In a stunning blow to
America's system of checks and balances, the bill exempts the production
and
spraying of pesticides from review under the Endangered Species Act.

"At a time when deformed frogs are being found in lakes and rivers
across
the nation, it is a dangerous travesty to exempt pesticides from
environmental review," said Suckling.

- Politicizes Science. The bill replaces the Endangered Species Act
focus on
using only the "best available science" and relying on scientists to
define
what is best, with a completely political system: it allows the
Secretary of
Interior, a political appointee, to define what science should and
should
not be used.

- Diverts the Nation's Environmental Budget to Corporations. Pombo's
bill
takes the Fish and Wildlife Service's budget hostage by allowing
corporations to reap hundreds of millions of dollars by simply
asserting
that they have been harmed by endangered species protections. The
Department
of Interior will then have to pay the corporations for their
speculative
"foregone" profits out of the budget established for America's national
parks, wildlife refuges, and endangered species.

"The takings provision of the bill is litigation magnet," said
Suckling,
"even the White House budget office concluded that it will dramatically
increase corporate lawsuits against the Department of Interior at an
enormous cost to the American tax payer."

ACTION:
Today's vote in the House takes direct aim at our endangered species
protections. It complicates both listing new species and implementing
recovery plans for species already on the list. Unfortunately, the
losers are the nation's bald eagles, ocelots, grizzly bears,
ivory-billed woodpeckers and other endangered species.
The debate on this legislation will now move to the Senate.
The Senate has an opportunity to act more responsibly: urge YOURS to do
so.

Hastily-Approved House Bill Would Cripple Landmark Wildlife Protections

> The grey wolf is one of many endangered species that has benefited from
> the Endangered Species Act.

Thursday afternoon, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that
would cripple the Endangered Species Act (ESA), the 30-year-old safety
net that has saved the bald eagle, the grey wolf and other rare
species.

"We knew there was a good chance this bad legislation would pass the
House. Our focus is now on the Senate, where we hope to find more
reasonable and responsible solutions to address species protection,"
says Michael Bean, chair of Environmental Defense's Wildlife program and
an expert on species law. (Read Environmental Defense statement on House
passage
<http://www.environmentaldefense.org/pressrelease.cfm?ContentID=4807> of
"Threatened and Endangered Species Act.")

Today's vote in the House would complicate both listing new species and
implementing recovery plans for species already on the list. The losers
are the nationčs bald eagles, ocelots, grizzly bears, ivory-billed
woodpeckers and other endangered species.

The Senate can act more responsibly and show that conservation and
development need not be at odds (see sidebar). The Senate stood between
the overly-hasty House and rare plants and animals once before.

A Cautious Approach Needed in Senate

> Modernizing the ESA Through Partnership
> The majority of endangered species live on private land, so farmers,
> ranchers, foresters and others are key to their recovery. The Safe
> Harbor program is one of ESA's best incentives for landowners to
> restore species. Pioneered by Environmental Defense, Safe Harbor
> agreements benefit imperiled wildlife while protecting landowners from
> added regulations.

> The Safe Harbor program was introduced 10 years ago in North Carolina
> to restore red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. Landowners agreed to
> protect old pine forests, where the woodpeckers dwell, and create nest
> sites. In return, the government agreed not to impose new regulations.
> Today, more than 325 landowners are participating in this innovative
> ESA program to protect the nationčs cherished wildlife.

> Read more about how private landowners are helping endangered species
> and just how important private land is to species recovery.

In 1978, the Supreme Court halted construction of a pork-barrel dam
project in Tennessee because it would harm endangered fish. Angry
members of the House passed a bevy of crippling amendments to the ESA by
a vote of 384 to 12.  The Senate insisted on a focused effort to fix the
few problems that really existed. It rejected virtually everything the
House had done. The Endangered Species Act emerged largely unscathed.

Because the Senate stood strong, whooping crane numbers have increased
ten-fold, California condors soar in the Grand Canyon, wolves roam in
Yellowstone, and black-footed ferrets populate the Great Plains. Bald
eagles have increased from a few hundred pairs to over 8,000 pairs in
the continental United States.  If successes such as these are to
continue, the Senate must again reject the hasty overreaching of the
House.

Ignoring successes, which take time and sustained effort

Opponents of the ESA claim it fails to help species -- claims not
supported by facts. When President Nixon signed the ESA into law in
1973, the government understood that severely depleted species cannot
recover overnight. It requires sustained efforts over prolonged periods.
The whooping crane, one of the best-known endangered creatures then and
now, shows that time is needed for recovery.

The whooping crane's population hit rock bottom in 1941 with only 15
birds. Between 1941 and 1973 concerted conservation efforts involving
U.S. and Canadian cooperation, state and federal governments, captive
breeding, a breeding-ground refuge in Texas and a sustained advocacy
campaign by the National Audubon Society helped boost its population to
48. Since the passage of the ESA in 1973, the whooping crane population
has grown nearly tenfold, to 468 birds.

In 1973, those in Congress familiar with the crane's story understood
that ensuring the birdčs future would require more decades of sustained
effort. The dramatic recovery since the ESA took effect demonstrates its
effectiveness and the need for sustained efforts. Though still
endangered, the ESA is helping it survive so it can eventually thrive.
(Read about other species whose restoration is an ongoing success.

Adopt a species You can help show that recovery is possible without
overhauling the ESA. Your support can help bring 15 endangered species
back from the brink of extinction. See the recovery plans and pitch in.

House mulls Endangered Species Act rewrite

Thursday, September 29, 2005; Posted: 6:19 p.m. EDT (22:19 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The environmental law credited with helping keep the
bald eagle from extinction but also provoking bitter fighting faces
revisions that could greatly expand private property rights.

The House was to vote Thursday on a top-to-bottom overhaul of the 1973
Endangered Species Act, perhaps the nation's most powerful environmental
law. The law has led to contentious battles over species such as the
spotted owl, the snail darter and the red-legged frog.

The bill would require the government to compensate property owners if
steps to protect species thwarted development plans. It also would make
political appointees responsible for some scientific determinations and
would stop the government from designating "critical habitat," which
limits development.

The changes come from the chairman of the House Resources Committee, GOP
Rep. Chairman Richard Pombo. The California rancher contends the current
rules unduly burden landowners and lead to costly lawsuits while doing
too little to save plants and animals.

"You've got to pay when you take away somebody's private property. That
is what we have to do," Pombo told House colleagues. "The only way this
is going to work is if we bring in property owners to be part of the
solution and to be part of recovering those species."

Many Democrats and moderate Republicans said Pombo's bill would
eliminate important protections for species and clear the way for large
handouts from the government to property owners.

The bill sets a "dangerous precedent that private individuals must be
paid to comply with an environmental law," said Rep. Nick Rahall of West
Virginia, the committee's top Democrat.

"What's next? Paying citizens to wear seat belts? ... This bill will not
improve species' ability to recover," he said.

A White House statement on Thursday supported the bill. But it noted
that payments to private property owners could have a "significant"
impact on the budget.

The Congressional Budget Office estimated that those payments would run
less than $20 million a year. The bill's opponents predicted a much
higher total.

The Fish and Wildlife Service says there are 1,268 threatened and
endangered plants and animals in the United States. About a dozen have
gone off the list over the years after they were determined to have
recovered; nine have become extinct.

Pombo's bill would:

> * Eliminate critical habitat. That is area now required to be
> designated when a species is listed and is protected from adverse
> actions by federal agencies. Instead, "recovery plans" for species,
> including designation of habitat, would have to be developed within two
> years. The recovery plans would not have regulatory force and the
> habitat would not be protected from federal actions.

> * Specify that landowners with development plans are due answers from
> the interior secretary within 180 days, with a 180-day extension
> possible, about whether the development would harm protected species.
> If the government fails to respond in time, the development could go
> forward. If the government blocks the development, the landowner would
> be paid the fair market value of the proposed development.

> * Give the interior secretary the job of determining what constitutes
> appropriate scientific data for decision-making under the law.

An alternative from a group of Democrats and moderate Republicans would
strengthen the recovery plans, eliminate the payments to landowners for
blocked developments and create a scientific advisory board to assist
the interior secretary.

Pombo's last attempt to rewrite the Endangered Species Act failed to
make it through the House in the mid-1990s.

The senator who heads the Senate Environment and Public Works
subcommittee with jurisdiction over the law has said he has concerns
about Pombo's bill.

Sen. Lincoln Chafee, a moderate Republican from Rhode Island, has not
decided whether to go ahead with a bill of his own.

Tonight, Thursday September 29, CNN's Anderson Cooper covered, on
NewsNight with Aaron Brown, the story of dogs that rescuers found shot
to death, apparently killed by police officers. The dogs had been left
on the third floor of Beauregard School Middle in St Bernard Parish,
with plenty of food and water, when their human families were forced to
evacuate without them. You can find out more about the issue at

DELTONA -- Janet Godfrey was stunned to hear her dog groomer was
living in squalid conditions among 70 animals.

At least once a month, Linda Castillo , 63, was welcomed into
Godfrey's Orange City home to care for her Shih Tzu and toy poodle.
Her arrest Wednesday on charges of animal cruelty just doesn't fit
with Godfrey's mental image of the clean, reliable and kind woman
she's known for two years.

Yet sad scenes of people hoarding dogs, cats and even farm animals and
vermin aren't rare. Each year up to 250,000 pets are held by animal
hoarders, estimates the Hoarding of Animals Research Consortium, a
Boston-based group of animal and human behavioral experts studying the
phenomenon.

Deltona Animal Control officers, wearing respirators to avoid the
fetid stench of feces and urine, rounded up 49 cats, 18 dogs and a
bird from Castillo's home Wednesday.

"I was just dumbfounded," said Godfrey.

In another recent case, a woman in the Washington, D.C., area was
found living with 266 live cats and 222 dead cats, with many of the
dead ones sealed in plastic containers, the Washington Post reported
in July.

A hoarder is usually defined as someone who holds more than a typical
number of animals without providing for their basic nutrition,
sanitation and veterinary care. The level of animal neglect is severe
enough to result in the animals' starvation, illness or death, but the
hoarder doesn't recognize the depth of the problem, according to the
research consortium.

A Ugandan was arrested after being caught roasting his neigbour's dog
in order to eat it, local media reported on Thursday.

Police arrested Hakim Abale Asega on a tip-off from neighbours who
said they found him barbecueing "a fat brown dog". They suspected he
had earlier clubbed it to death.

"Dog meat is similar to goat meat, if not better," the 30-year-old
casual worker from Nakiju village was quoted as saying.

PRESS COMMUNIQUE

Affidavit made by a process server : Dogs’ and cats’
fur sold by French furriers.

PARIS – The French and International Association for
the Protection of Animals (AFIPA) refered to the Paris
District Court to establish an affidavit against
several French furriers who were suspected to sell
cats’ and dogs’ fur.

After several months of investigations, Nicolas
BISCAYE, The Chairman of the AFIPA, accompanied by a
Parisian process server, Maitre Jean-Louis HAUGUEL,
has thus been able to prove that despite their denial,
French furriers are selling cats’ and dogs’ fur
imported from Asian countries (official visits and
reports made at furriers’ firms).

Investigations led by the AFIPA were a success, as
cats’ and dogs’ furs, but also Lynxes’ and wolves’
furs (those species are protected by the Washington
Agreement) have been found at several French
furriers-designers’ houses.

The AFIPA is asking the French government to forbid
the importation, the production and the selling of
dogs’ and cats’ fur.

According to Nicolas BISCAYE, ‘it would be easy to
obtain. First, the totally unenforcable decree made by
Hervé GAYMARD on November 5, 2003, should be modified.
Then a French bill should be voted.’

The AFIPA also asks for the French retailers to be
legally obliged to mention on their products the
commercial name, the scientific name, the slaughtering
method used to kill the animals, and the country the
animal slaughtered for his fur comes from.

The Association reserves the right to sue the furriers
who sell furs coming from protected species.

Romford Pet Shop Update

Changed hands?

It would now appear, that although the pet shop has had a change of name
(now Pet Shop Girls) and a 'lick' of paint, it is still owned by the
evil Doreen Pemberton.  Pemberton is due to appear at Havering
Magistrates' Court, together with her son, Dean Hood, to answer several
charges of animal cruelty.  A new 'manager' has been placed in the shop,
although Pemberton is there on most days (just to help out we
presume!!).

No Licence!

Officially, the shop is not selling the animals that it still has on the
premises (birds, kittens, etc. but no puppies).  However, we are led to
believe that some trading of animals still takes place - this is being
looked at.  They do not have a licence to trade in animals.

Court

Re-homing application

On 19th Sep, magistrates in Havering rejected an application from the
RSPCA, to re-home 30 animals taken from the pet shop last September,
including 25 dogs and 3 cats (some dogs had been euthanised due to
parvo-virus).  Housing the animals, has cost the RSPCA Ł70,000 so far.
The RSPCA wanted to re-home the dogs to prevent them becoming
institutionalised.

Witness William Cartmell said that institutionalising damage had already
been done and that the animals would not suffer by having to wait a
further 6 weeks before the cruelty charges were heard. William Cartmell
is a vet and a director of infamous Wickham Laboratory in Hampshire, a
contract vivisection facility, which tortures and murders thousands of
animals each year.  Cartmell is well known for his support of animal
abuse.  Further details of Wickham Lab:

www.swatonline.co.uk [http://www.swatonline.co.uk/]

www.buav.org/undercover/wickham.html

Cruelty charges

The charges relating to general cruelty are scheduled to be heard from
Monday 31st October to Tuesday 8th November at Havering Magistrates'
Court.  The case will be heard by a district judge.

A further charge of cruelty to a kitten, found hidden behind shelving in
the pet shop on Christmas Eve last year and suffering from dehydration,
mouth ulcers and other ailments, will be heard on 14th and 15th November
at the same court.

Other charges

A Crown Court appearance for Pemberton, is due sometime this month.  She
faces charges of displaying endangered species for sale, without an
article 10 licence.

A demo is being organised for Monday 31st October, at Havering
Magistrates' Court, to coincide with the first day of the case.  The
meet time will be 9.30 a.m. near to the court - further details will be
circulated nearer the time - please make a note of this!

We need to make sure that these scummy pet shop people, Pemberton and
Hood, are reminded that we haven't forgotten their crimes against
animals.

We need to make sure that Pemberton and Hood are aware we are keeping an
eye on them and their evil trade in innocent animals.

PLEASE CROSSPOST - I HOPE THAT AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE SEE THIS
SEGMENT ON CNN TONIGHT IN THE HOPES OF PREVENTING ANYTHING LIKE
THIS
FROM EVER, EVER HAPPENING AGAIN.  THIS STORY IS GRUESOME AND
DISTURBING, SO PLEASE DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF THIS MAY OFFEND
YOU.

Yesterday, while working with an animal rescue group in New
we went to the scene of what I can only describe as a dog
massacre.
This beautiful historic three-story building in St. Bernard Parish
was the evacuation center for that area.  The building's grand and
elegant facade hides a horribly gruesome scene inside - that of
evacuee-owned dogs who were literally slain ..... brutally
murdered.
I will never forget the horrendous scene for the rest of my life -
there were three floors of horror inside - dogs abused and then
killed. One of the CNN reporters arrived while we were there. I
believe that their website (cnn.com) reports 14 dogs massacred,
but
there were actually 15 plus at least 3 newborn puppies.  Again,
I'm
sure this will be graphic and horrible to view, but public
attention
needs to be drawn to horrors such as this. There are allegations
that police officers were responsible for the shootings, but those
are only allegations and I do not want to spread rumors. I hope
that this national exposure will force an investigation.  The only
thing I can say factually is that these poor innocent souls were
NOT
humanely destroyed and I have photos to prove it.

The story is running on CNN tonight - at 8 p.m. from what I've
heard, but, but I don't know if that's PT, CDT or ET - we have no
t.v. here - New Orleans is still 90% without power of any kind.

Please spread the word.  Thanks,

Guide sentenced for illegal wolf killings

MCGRATH: David Haeg will appeal, forfeits license.

By TATABOLINE BRANT
Anchorage Daily News

Published: October 1, 2005

A Soldotna big-game guide convicted of illegally killing wolves while
working with the state on a predator control program near McGrath has
been ordered to forfeit his guiding license for five years, officials
said Friday.

David Haeg, 39, was also sentenced to 35 days in jail, fined $6,000 and
ordered to forfeit his plane to the government. But those and other
penalties -- everything but the loss of his license -- have been put on
hold by the court pending an appeal, according to Mark Morones, a
spokesman for the state Department of Law.

The sentence, handed down Thursday in McGrath, stems from a March 2004
investigation in the areas of the Swift, Stony and Big rivers. The
Alaska State Troopers found that Haeg killed nine wolves in the area by
shooting them from his aircraft and then falsely reported the location
of the killings to state wildlife officials who had hired him to kill
the animals only within a prescribed zone.

A McGrath jury in July found Haeg guilty of five counts of knowingly
taking nine wolves the same day he was airborne, two counts of unlawful
possession of illegally taken game, one count of unsworn falsification
and one count of trapping wolverines during a closed season.

The total sentence handed down this week was 570 days with 535
suspended
and a $19,500 fine with $13,500 suspended, Morones said.

Haeg was also placed on probation for seven years and ordered to pay
restitution of $4,500 for the illegally taken wolves. The court said he
had to turn over the hides of the animals, the guns used to kill them
and the airplane involved -- a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, according to
Morones.

Efforts to contact Haeg on Friday for comment were unsuccessful.

In an unrelated case, Haeg's guiding service, Dave Haeg's Alaskan
Hunts,
was also involved in a fatal hunting accident in August near Anchorage
that killed a Pennsylvania man.

According to troopers, Haeg and an assistant took the East Coast client
on a bear hunt across Cook Inlet. The Pennsylvania man shot and wounded
a bear, troopers said, but did not kill it. Haeg told his assistant to
shoot the animal again. But just as the assistant fired, the
Pennsylvania man stood up in the path of the bullet. He was shot in the
head and died at the scene.

The shooting was deemed an accident and no charges were filed, troopers
spokesman Tim DeSpain said Friday.

*** Animal Voices is Toronto's animal advocacy and veggie radio show. We
air live every Tuesday 11 am-12 pm EDT. Catch us at http://www.ciut.fm,
or in the area at CIUT 89.5 FM. Archived shows and additional info are
available at http://www.animalvoices.ca - Podcasting now available! ***

Please join us tomorrow, Oct. 4th, for our (Canadian) Thanksgiving show.
Richard O'Barry, Marine Mammal Specialist with One Voice-France, will
start us off with a reminder about the Oct. 8th international protest of
Japan's dolphin slaughter. Then, in recognition of Canadian
Thanksgiving, bestselling author Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson will speak on
the emotional lives of turkeys and their plight on factory farms.
Lastly, as some of us prepare to gorge on mashed potatoes and tofu loaf,
we'll be joined by representatives from freegan.info who will talk about
the politics of consumption, waste, and the practical side of being
freegan.

Recently archived Animal Voices' shows include:

- Animal Rights in Brazil / Walk for Farm Animals
- Canadian electoral politics and animal issues
- Authors of _Vegan Freak_
- Helping animal victims of Hurricane Katrina
