Its been about 20 years ago now but if I remember correctly our neighbors
had two pet rats and my sons would go over to play with them. My youngest
son decided at that time he really wanted a pet rat. I did some
investigating on their care, or what was available at the time, and we obtained
our
first rat. We all fell in love with the little girl and it just took off from
there...LOL We have not been ratless since.
It was a bit frustrating in the beginning because there wasn't enough
centrally located information on health care for them, and vets did not have
much to go on. Being in health care I had access to individuals in
comparative medicine and other areas and learned that many of the disease
processes
and treatments were like those for humans. So some of my peers and myself
started discussing the feasibility of putting together a preventative
health care site focusing on just pet rats that would be easily accessible to
the pet community. We had the support of some very wonderful vets, and
researchers who agreed to consult with us, and pet owners willing to submit
case
histories, and voila! in 2003 the result was the Rat Guide.
