Hello All,

Galadriel, one of the moms of the 3 'oops' litters over 2 years ago, has passed
on. I saw that she was slowing down and just didn't look right. I found her at
the bottom of her cage looking like she was just resting. I've had her since
she was 4 weeks old and she was about 2 1/2 years old.

Farimir, her brother and 'husband', passed earlier this summer. Her two sisters
are still doing farily well for old gals.

Please don't send condolences - I know you all are wonderful about grieving with
those of us who have lost. Just give an extra treat and extra love to the rats
that you have in Galadriel's memory.

I'll miss you Galadriel - sweet girl.

Take Care, Rat Mama aka Janet

I am trying to help someone who has e-mailed me privately. I have never heard of
a "clitoral opening infection", which is what her vet has diagnosed her rat as
having. I'm stumped on that one. I'm trying to get her to tell her vet that I
think her rat has a uterine tumor (from what she describing). I don't think her
vet made the proper diagnosis.

You can contact her at casanovasmyhorse@...

shes on Orbax, and she gets 0.3 ml a day,and I dont mind having the question
posted,at first we thought she was just in heat, cause she acts completely
normal, same as she always has,but they dont bleed when theyre in heat so....

From: Kd J <casanovasmyhorse@...>
Subject: Re: hello again...

well, she said that she has an infection in the clitoral opening, she wasnt sure
exactly what it was so she went on a website (thats a veterinary site for them
to compare notes and findings) and found when they get puss out of there they
usually do antibiotics,I dont know how she would even have gotten the
infection...the puss comes out of the clitoral opening, not the vagina.the only
sign of a tumor that I have noted on the tumor list is that she bleeds, but its
not alot, its usually one or two days our of the week, and maybe 5-6 drops of
blood total, sometimes a little more, but puss comes out too.

I'm sure you prolly don't remember me,cause I haven't written for a few
months, but I was hoping you might have some kind of ideas for some kind of
holistic antibiotic,my rat is currently on meds for an infected uterus, but they
don't seem to be working (they never really work on her for some reason) but I
was wondering if maybe you had some ideas, cause the only other alternative is
spaying, which is very expensive, and dangerous,I don't know how often my vet
spays rats,so I'm kind of hesitant about that...any info would be much
appreciated,thanks!

I've come home late tonight to discover a large lump on Cammy's arm. I am amazed
at the size of this lump considering I only checked her over a few days
ago...just how quickly can these things grow? I feel terrible for not spotting
it sooner.
Based on Debbie Ducommun's guide, I'm pretty sure it's a mammary tumor - soft
and easy to move around - and Cammy's almost 2 and not spayed. Cammy seems her
normal self, apart from being a bit sneezy but she's on baytril for that. I'll
try and get her into the vet tomorrow morning. These things always happen at the
worst time - am broke at the moment from buying the rats a new cage. Ah well, I
guess that's what credit cards are for! Let's just hope that it's not something
more sinister.

This is old news. The ban was lifted by the FDA over a year ago. I
believe it was September 8th of '08. There are still some states who
have their own bans, such as Florida, but in other states they are now
legal again.

However, the CDC still has a ban on the importation of these animals so
no new breeding stock or pets can be brought in from breeders in the UK
or Canada.
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/monkeypox/animals.htm

For anyone like me who is interested in having one for a pet one day,
the bad news is that there seems to be so few of them left in captivity
that no one has enough left to breed. I personally only know of 5 people
who own them, and all but 2 are neutered/spayed. I heard rumors that
someone near me in Austin, TX had enough animals left to create a few
breeding pairs, but I haven't heard back in over 8 months.

Hi

Were trying to introduce our latest girl PoSh a 5 and a half month old
Burmese Dumbo to our resident girls Nidra my first ratty a Irish Blue from Pet
Smart ( Yes I Know ) and her cage mate a Sky Blue Dumbo Rex Shayla from a
breeder.
Nidra and Shayla our 20 months and 21 months and bonded Shayla seems to be ok
we have had the girls together briefly 2 times now and as I expected Nidra is
the more aggressive towards PoSh.
PoSh was the runt of the litter and is very passive with a nick in the ear
from her cage mates before we got her. She eventually will be a mom as were are
pairing here with our male Burmese Dumbo Brian .
Were are getting help from 2 local breeders and the pairing is to help improve
the blood lines and carry on the legacy of our mentor Brian Shafer who owned
Sleepy Hollow Fancy Rattery until his untimly death from a stroke earlier this
year.
If anyone is in the san diego calif area and can offer some help were open to
helping them get along. It may take more time and we haven't had a lot of
success in the past.

I don't know why they do it, just that they do. All of my boyz have been "latex
intolerant" and/or "latex substitute intolerant". Bandages and latex/vinyl
gloves must be destroyed at all costs! Henri and Navi are not as aggressive
toward the vinyl gloves as Acorn and Cashew were, but they still try to get them
off my hands.

Andrea would you be interested in the holistic approach to help Jarat with that
abscess? I use a combination of homeopathic products that can get rid of
abscesses without surgical intervention, but I've only talked about it at
Holistarat.

Jarat has a swollen mouth due to an abscess, he has been to the vet and had
it drained , he is on antibiotics and metacam. It has been two weeks almost
and it has not gone. He can still eat and drink as it is on the side of his
cheek and affects one corner of his mouth. The vet said if it didn't resolve
then we have to suspect a larger problem and the only way would to have it
surgically drained and examined. It is not his teeth this was checked first.

I have faith in this vet but I am at a quandary as to what to do. The
initial vets visit was horrific for him and to hold him while his mouth was
drained was horrible for him. If the cause is a cancer or a tumour my
question is , is it worth putting him through the pain of his mouth being so
sore after the operation or am I prolonging the inevitable only to put him
through misery to have him die anyway. Also where he was injected bleed
profusely afterward so that worries me.

Normally I would go for it and say well it is his best chance. But he is one
of the 4 minky brothers I rescued from the RSPCA ""my pick me boys"" they
have been my PR rats for nearly 2 years. I love them dearly but each one of
them has come down with strange afflictions. Zerox developed hind leg
paralysis after 1 year and then died cause his heart gave out. We suspect a
tumour was the cause of the paralysis.

Zilch died suddenly just over a week ago , his heart just gave out without
much warning. I was devastated. Then Jarat started the same day with this
lump on his face. Riley has had skin problems for nearly 18 months, he is
the one the honey medication helped but the cause of his skin problems is
still unknown and he still breaks out in rashes which the honey medication
just keeps the sores under control.

So my gut feeling is that these boys just have something in their genetics
that are causing these problems. And it is something very nasty.

I guess I am just asking for opinions. Rather than put him through a lot of
pain I would rather put him to sleep with no suffering. I hate watching them
die slowly or struggle to keep going when the end result is still the same.

Dang good question!! My boys seem to have this fierce determination to get to
any band aid. I too am curious as to why rats are so fascinated with band aids.
Can anyone answer this question for Veronica and I?

We're relatively new to rats, but having had dogs and cats for our
whole lives, the adjustment curve for damage (or mess) caused wasn't
very steep. The only difference is that the holes and chew marks are
smaller with the rats.
One dog ate the wallpaper off of the chimney. Another age part of a
window sill. Another chewed the leather wrap off of a car shifter knob
(and left teeth marks on the aluminum shift rod!). Bring it on, ratties!
When I took Sheldon to the Dr last Saturday (hopefully he comes home
today), he expressed his displeasure at being zipped up by chewing a
rat-head sized hole in the screen of their brand new bonding pouch.
Terriffic.

Have you tried your local freecycle web site for a new cage? Fish tank? It would
really be a shame for the rat, if she is old, to have her adjust to another new
home when she is completely adapted to you and your routine.

Sorry, missed the "important" details: Female, one black, one white,
both very friendly.

I just received an email from a good sam who picked up 2 rats that
were left in a park in their cage in NYC, Long Island/Metro. Anyone
by any chance willing to take them in long or short-term? If so, let
me know and I'll pass on the contact info of the good sam.

I, and the ratties, thank you!

Subject: (rats) Ratty Renovation

I cleaned the rat cage yesterday, and had rearranged all their toys as well as
put in new ones so they'd not get bored.

However, it seems that last night, the boys decided they'd rather have
everything either back where it used to be, or somewhere where /they/ wanted it.
Which resulted in the need to move /everything/ from the topmost level all the
way down to the bottom, and everything from the bottom, to a level in the
middle. And everything in the middle? Well, some can go to the top, some to the
bottom, and everything else, where ever it fits!

This, of course, resulted in tornado-hit chaos in the morning. They kicked their
small cardboard box down to the bottom, as well as the cardboard toothpaste box
I'd left in there for them. Their big cardboard tube (the kind you buy in
petstores that have that annoying yellow fluff inside them that I simply take
out) had been positioned so it was obvious they had tried to shove it down their
parrot ladder, but failed when it wouldn't fit through the hole from level three
to level two.

Once they had blocked level three off with the tube, they were unable to get
anything back up to the top. They flipped over their litterbox, probably trying
to move it, and their foodbowl was dragged across the cage (I'm guessing they'd
tried to bring it into their cardboard house with them, but it wouldn't fit
through the doorway). The only thing that hadn't moved was the brick that's
bigger than the both of them positioned under the waterbottle to keep the
bedding from getting wet.

Despite the new mess, however, I didn't have the heart to straighten it up this
morning. How could I mess up all their hard work? We'll see how long this
arrangement lasts before the ratty renovators return to "fix" the cage up again!
