rmca.org has some good info and
http://ratguide.com/care/ is also a good site incase you never
visitied those. Glad to hear your babies are doing better. I have
my two girls in the same cage now. They only power groomed each
other once. They don't seem to care alot for each other though.
One usually stays on one level and the other on the other level. I
am looking for one more girl. I am going to get a female hairless
dumbo (someday soon I hope). Have a great day!

The lice were feeding on my poor ratties, and the "Revolution" drops
seemed to work, but took a while.
I also washed them in a cat/kitten shampoo from Hartz, now at least
the smell pretty!
On two of my "Corsican sisters" (because they have big hairy feet,
like cheech and chong int the movie of the same name)...The lice eggs,
called "nits" were covering there fur, tiny small, silvery "things"
attached to each hair shaft! check your ratties for those silvery
looking "tiny clumps" on their fur.
The two Corsican sisters actually had gotten the horrible parasites in
their nasal passages, and all the other openings that a femal rat
has,...it was shocking to see it.
I think that the parasites almost killed them, because of the labored
breathing and blood from their poor little noses.
The other ratties all had terrible wounds, but are all healing after
extreme amounts of loving care, anti biotics, saline irrigation, etc.
The tea tree oil body wash seems to help their skin, and it makes them
smell nice too!
One of the cuties actually likes to get a bath! The little dumbo girls
looks so cute, all dripping wet, water running off her tail, those
little whiskers "whiskering" and those big eyes so trusting not to
hurt her, and keep here above the water!
I towel dry them first with paper towels, in case of the parasites,
then go to the pure white towel to catch any bugs that might still be
wandering around. I use a small blow dryer on low, to finish with.
They seem to enjoy the process, all except the Corsicans and the other
grey dumbo girl, ...she lost her sister recently, I came home to find
her just lying there on the bottom of the cage, with her eyes open,
but not moving....she was dead, and the same age as her twin sister.
No blood,no marks,or wounds. The wooden play house was turned over
next to her head, and I fear that the other ratties when they get
"playing with the wooden house,...they throw it across the cage
against the cage door. It looks as if the little dumbo girl got hit
with the flying house, perhaps breaking her neck.
The wooden house is now gone, and the web site said that you have to
be very careful about pet store playthings as someone reported getiing
lice from eggs that were on the wooden play house purchased in the pet
store! I now freeze everything I can, food treats, etc. for a few days
before the girls get them.
I went, (and they did) over a month over suffering because of these
parasites,...I am wrung out, but they are at least doing better now.
You all know how they look at you, as if saying "Hi daddy! we missed
you all day! lets us out so we can play and run around,...got any
treats?....lets have some!
God,...I love the little buggers.

Thanks for the freezing tip. I think the bedding is where the lice and mites on
my babies are coming from.

Hi again,

I agree with Candice that vets charge WAY too much for simple problems with
little animals.

Any parasite problems (I was going to write, "vermin problems" until I realized
some people actually regard rats as vermin--HORRORS!) I had with the rats (last
being at least 5 yrs ago) were brought in from other places. The mites came
from an infested rat from the SPCA. The lice came from a rat I bought from a
petstore. It was my fault that I didn't inspect their fur carefully enough
before I added them to my colony.

I had an idea last night as I pondered your lice problem while changing the
cages. It's been bugging me (pardon the pun) because in my experience, lice are
not difficult to get rid of, even in large colonies. Since they have a limited
life cycle, nearly anything you use will kill them ( I used bird spray), & if
you use the remedy at regular, frequent intervals you interrupt the life cycle &
you're done with the little buggers.

You say you use shredded newspapers as bedding---so do I. I was going over old
newpapers that were in the recycle box the other day which felt gritty. Upon
close inspection, I saw some little paper lice. I've seen these before
infesting very old books. Is it possible that you have paper lice?????
If so, they shouldn't bother the rats since they don't suck blood but eat paper
components.

So my question is, "Are these lice actually lunching on your rats? Are they
attached to the flesh? Do the rats scratch & have sores, or are the lice just
infesting the paper bedding"?

If I am insulting you with my question, I apologize since I know you did a lot
of research on this matter. I just had to ask since the possiblity of paper
lice would have a such a simple solution.
Good luck & let us know,
-Wildflower

i would just use bird mite & lice spray or lice spray for kittens. I
used the bird spray from wal mart on my mice for mites. for mites you
spray it in the bedding, for lice, on the mice themselves. none of my
rats has ever gotten lice. i don't know why vets have to be so
expensive! we only when once for a mouse that was sick. it was $30
just to look at him and $50 for his medicine! the medicine didn't
even help. (he was having seizures). i wouldnt get the stuff for
horses, its probably too strong for little ratties. you should
prbably just get the bird or kitten stuff, if the vet's doesn't work.
but i don't think i'd use them both at the same time, since it might
be too much. i hope it works out.

I feverishly searched for info on the net, and found a univesity site
that had photos of the lice and methods of getting rid of them.
I went to the best vet in the area, and they wanted to charge $40.00
per Rat (six of them) before they would do anything!
I had one of them in for teeth trimming just a few days earlier, and
no parasites were detected then?
They would not give me the Ivermectin, but sold me a topical
medication called "Revolution" for cats. One drop every two weeks at
the base of the neck per rattie. Three small tubes containing about
five drops each, at $40.00!
I don't know if the stuff Walmart sells which is by Hartz, would work
the same for under $5.00?
I got rid of all bedding material, toys etc.
I am using newspaper torn into strips for right now. I bathed all of
them in tea tree oil body wash, then treated them with the revolution.
So far, no improvement.
I also disinfected EVERYTHING I could find ariund the ratties.
I considered going to Agway and getting the stuff used for horses,
about the size of uncooked rice, per rattie, in conjuction with the
revolution stuff, ...but am afraid to overdose them with pesticides.
Thank you for your letters.

visited here often lately, thinking the group was prettymuch defunct but I see
it's still alive & posting.I have a large number of rats & remember the great
lice infestation.Worse yet was the horrible MITE infestation (that came from
aninfested SPCA rescue. Are you sure it's lice? I've never seen lice in bedding.
Lice aresmall beige enlongated critters attached to the skin of the infesteewith
accompanying transparent nits along the hair shaft.I've found using a spray
formulated for birds' lice & mites workswell if you repeat every 5 days.On the
other hand, if they're mites (the tropical rat mite), theylook like tiny red
moving dots on the skin mostly, rather than thefur. If they are mites, you will
see them everywhere-- in the cages,on the cages, near the cages, in the bedding,
on the surface holdingthe cages. But most of them won't be red since they
haven't had ablood meal yet. I had them on my bed, in my hair (I swear). They
bitme until I scratched myself raw.The No Pest Strip as mentioned in Suzie's
post worked for me,although I've heard Ivermectin is very effective if precisely
dosed. Good luck! -Wildflower

The second option on the page was flea powders. I

My first rat Milo passed away yesterday. He was 2 1/2 years old. I
will be having him cremated. I was hoping I would have time to get
over my father's passing before Milo left me but no such luck. Milo
had been such a comfort to me this past week since my dad's funeral
last Thursday. He would cuddle under the covers with me and just go
nuts licking me. I would give him scritches and hold him close. I
had started doing that before my father died as I knew Milo was
getting up there in age. I am so very glad I spent that extra time
with him. Milo was a very special boy. He was the alpha male but
very much loved by the other boys. Milo loved to play peek a boo and
couldn't get enough of sweets.

My original Milo is still with me. He is almost 2 1/2 years old. He
loves to cuddle in bed with me under the covers.

Some of my girls who are related have small lumps but they do not
require surgery at this time. They are all happy little terrors who
got hold of 3/4 of a roll of paper towels lastnight. How they
managed to get it all through their cage without waking me up is
beyond me. Their cage is right next to my side of the bed and I am
usually a very light sleeper. =D

Hello again,

I have one male that I allow freedom of the 2nd floor - Buckaroo. He is very
clean. I know where he lives, & clean his "nest" regularly. I find ratties that
have a life of their own are more interesting than those confined to a cage-
they develop interesting & quirky habits & personalities, eg. One giant hooded
male ( Omar) was a coin collector! He would pilfer coins from dressers,
pockets, purses, jars. He had a very nice collection, probably worth $50 or
more.

On the other hand, I had a cage of females escape a few months ago (1st time
ever!). I was "lucky" to catch all but one within a few days. Unfortunately,
Bucky was quicker than I was! Now I have 57 babies in a rainbow of color
combos.

The remaining female ended up in the basement where I hear the pitter patter of
MANY small feet.

Does anyone have any suggestions on rounding up the escapee mom & brood? I'm
having nightmares about what could be If I don't catch them soon (I did catch
5).

PS. I already feel irresponsible for this situation. But honestly, it's never
happened before in the decade & a half that I've had rats. Havahart traps work
once & then the rats are just too smart to try it again.

I KNOW this must have happened with other rat lovers! Desperately need advice!
HELP!!!!

--------------------------------- Hi,
I last asked about corn in the rattie's diet.
I'd like to share my experience with rattie lumps.I've had many females that had
mammary lumps throughout the years. These usually present in rattie middle-age.
Luckily, all of the lumps were benign, fatty tumors (which will get enormous, &
in one case weighed more than the rat herself.) I had them all surgically
removed and in all cases the rat survived & healed well. The surgery is
expensive for such a small beastie, however! The vets will tell you that surgery
on a small animal is more difficult than on a larger one, eg. a dog or cat.

All of my girls survived 6 months post- surgery. That's a nice life extension,
I think. The problem was that ALL tumors returned within 3 months (despite the
vet thinking he'd removed it entirely). It took another 3 months before the
tumor got very large again. By that time, the little rattie was elderly & not a
good candidate for another surgery.

Right now, my colony is healthy & I have no girls with tumors, but I'd do it
again ( surgery, that is) in a heartbeat if they do get them & I can afford it.

PS I also have ferrets & a black lab named Kazoo. :) Kate aka Wildflower

My Cowbaby had an ulcerated tumor removed a couple months ago. She has healed
nicely and is back to her old self. The spoiled brat gets baby food almost every
night in addition to her regular food.

Maria passed away a couple of months ago. My sweet little gal. She had gone
blind during surgery (vet's fault. I'll never use him again). After that she
just became very sickly and there was nothing my other vet could do to help her.

I now have three that have lumps. Lily my gorgeous Himalayan has a tiny lump.
Kazoo has a teeny tiny lump that is hard (not the usual squishy kind and it has
showed no signs of growth), and Suzy has a lump. None require removal at this
time (meaning the rats are not in pain or are uncomfortable).

Other than that and a ferret with adrenal everyone else is doing pretty good.
They keep me on my toes.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Me and my fuzzies are. =D

Hi everybody,...been away for a long time,...alot of things have
happened since I last posted.
Blizzard is my white albino,...a real sweetheart I rescued from a
shelter a year ago. She has a medium size lump in her reproductive
area.
She seems happy, but is sleeping alot more.
Why does it seem when you take the chance of really loving
something/someone/some little animal,...something not so nice happens?
I feel bad for my little white Blizzy.
Take care all,....the other Ratties are doing ok, Buttercup my female
butterscotch hooded dumbo(soooo cute) has her
hair thinning out, and a little wheezing/staining around one of her
eyes,...but she is happy too.

Foods to Feed with Caution
carbonated beverages—rats can’t burp (but they can fart!)
chocolate—contains stimulants that can cause heart failure or neurological
poisoning

Dried corn can contain high levels of fungal contaminates which has been shown
to cause liver cancer in rats. Corn also contains high levels of both nitrates
and amines. These two compounds can combine in the stomach to form nitrosamines
which are carcinogenic. Other foods high in nitrates include beets, celery,
eggplant, lettuce, cucumber, radishes, spinach, collards and turnip greens.
Therefore, I suggest you limit the amount of these foods in your rat’s diet.
Some fresh corn is fine, but if you feed your rats blocks, try to avoid brands
which have corn as the first ingredient.

Lots of Scritches,

~Susie and Brood~

Links to info about corn

http://www.rmca.org/Articles/corn.htm

http://www.rmca.org/Articles/ethoxyquin.htm

Look under foods to feed with caution here:
http://ratfanclub.org/diet.html

Those are the only links I could think of off the top of my head. I bet if you
do a google search for corn and rat diet you could find more.

Are you part of the problem? There are too many dogs and cats out there without
homes. Spay or neuter your pets.
