For the third year running, Animal Ark veterinary centre, in Goodmayes,
Essex, UK is holding a Rat healthcare event. The previous two years were hugely
successful, and this year promises to be even better.

Three guest speakers are now confirmed, as well as the main
talk of the day given by Lyndon Basha, MRCVS, watching a ultrasound scan of
a pregnant rat, a rat castration and much much more. Also don't forget that
this year there is a prize raffle and quite a lot of food and health
supplement companies have donated wonderful prizes (including a very large
bottle of
green mush all the way from USA).

Everything this year is going to be even bigger than the last year.. the
buffet, the talk is expanded to include a lot more info including diabetes,
msra,
bird flu etc, and the items on sale at the end of the day will be vastly
expanded as well, and there will be rat umbrellas, shopping bags, t-shirts
and
sweatshirts, plus we're trying to arrange for a small company who make
knitted rat accessories to come along and show you their range of items.

So if you've attended before - welcome back and if you've never attended..
you don't know what you're missing.. come along and join the fun, learn all
you
need to know about your rats and see behind the scenes at a busy veterinary
practise and view and learn things you never knew you didn't know (huh?).

Although based just outside London, UK, this event is not just limited to
those living in the immediate area. It's open to anybody who can get there
on
the day and we look forward to seeing you there.

The vets, speakers and organisers of this event give their time for free.
Ticket costs go towards the stationery and buffet costs, any monies left
over is donated to the Animal Ark stray fund to help care for injuried, sick
and
homeless pets/wildlife.

Come to the Rat Healthcare Day on May 27 2006 in Goodmayes, Essex (UK).

I haven't posted in ages, so I thought I would pop in and say hi and
give an update on my crew. Right now I have a hairless dumbo, Binky,
and a Siamese dumbo, Suey. Both are females and doing pretty good.
Binky does have a knot on her face, but I think it's from a scratch
and am watching it. Her and Suey fight sometimes, though nothing
major (since I don't see any scratch marks or anything other than the
spot on her face.) Hope everyone had a good new year and their
critters are diong great.

In the time I've been reading posts from various groups, I do read a
lot where people are complaining about their vets, either because of
their vet's prices, or because their vet won't treat rats, etc. This
has spurred me on to create a special page on my website, specifically
for vets that are good with our ratties.
I'd appreciate it if you would all pop in and enter the details of your
*good* rat vets, so that others might use them if needed.
This applies to vets all over the world, I want to have as many
recommendations as possible on my site, in order to help as many people
and their rats as I can, so your help would be invaluable.
Please make sure to enter which country the vet is in, alongside the
address.
Please crosspost this anywhere you feel it's appropriate.
Many thanks.

Posted on behalf of one of the organisers:

Following the success of last years Rat Healthcare Event at the
Animal Ark Veterinary Centre, another one will be held again this
year.

This event features general health information, emergency first aid
care, spotting illnesses, a section on herbal and natural treatments,
treating simple ailments yourself plus a question and answer session
with the vets and/or nurses at the practise.

Basically this course is designed to keep the need for an out-of-ours
emegency vet at bay and for you to be able to spot and treat problems
yourself until you can get to a vet during normal practise hours.
It's also designed to help you spot some problems very early on and
to treat simple things for yourself (cleaning abcesses and wounds
etc). You get shown how to clip teeth and nails, how to make up your
own saline and rehydration fluids, what to keep in your rat first aid
box and lots more.

The event this year will be held around June (final date to be
confirmed), the price of tickets will depend on how many people
attend (the money raised through the tickets pays for Animal Ark's
fee for holding the event, provision of light refreshments
(sandwiches, snacks, salads, drinks) plus stationery requirements
(printer ink, paper, folders). I do not make money from this
event). The event itself is run through the Estuary Rat Club but you
do not have to be a member to attend.

Animal Ark is located in Goodmayes, Essex and is easy to reach by car
and mainline train services, (two buses required from nearest
underground station).

Anybody interested in attending should send an email to me, Lora, at
FiloFox@.... You will be sent more details nearer the time
(contacting me is not a committment to attend) including date and
time of event, number of places available and ticket price.

Whilst people who attended last year are welcome to return, they
should take note that the talk will cover the same subjects and that
priority for places will be given to those who have not attended
before (any left over places will then be offered to people who came
last year).

I was very excited to see themwith their eyes open, and running all
over the place. As of two days ago there was eight health babies, and
a stressed out Mom. I give the best of care I can to all my ratties,
including vet visits,...just for the record. When I was changing the
bedding I counted the babies,.....only six!...They were too big to
get through the cage bars,...could Sarah have killed and eaten them?
This whole experience is getting very stressful to me.
I don't want peopl;;e thinking that I am not taking proper care of my
pets/family.
ipscman45
PS the pet store did not want them back, except as snake food.
They were going to put the babies in the freezer as snake snacks.
NO WAY!!!!!!

I of course think you should have taken her to the
vet. Any rat with that much damage should see a vet.
I was also wondering how long the two rats lived
together? I'm hoping you don't get anymore rats, at
least for a while since you do have the babies and
maybe can't afford vet care(?). Also hoping you do
not get anymore rats from the place you got your
newest rats. Sorry to hear about your rattie. That
is truly horrible what happened to her. I've never
had a female act like that to a rat that had babies,
though I haven't had many litters at my house (I'd do
not plan to ever have another litter, just for those
of you who don't know.) Had they got along fine
before? I have heard about rats getting hormonal when
and shortly after pregnancy. I haven't heard about
another attacking a cage mate though.

I can't believe this, but after Sarah had her babies, "Sandy" a very
calm female rat, purchased to keep my old girl Daisy company, as she
was alone and sad, suddenly attacked Daisy, ripped both of her eyes
out!!!!!! I was horrified to find this after hearing the screams from
the cages. Sandy had given birth to eight babies, (I did not know
she was pregnant either) I would surmise she went after poor little
Daisy because of this.
I gave medical attention to Daisy, as she had been beaten up as well,
and put her in a smaller cage by her self. When I came home much
later that day(in the evening) I came to the small cage to get her to
stay with me as we always did every night. Daisy had her head
resting on her food bowl, but when she heard me, and smelled my
hands, with all the effort she had left, scampered onto my hands,
then as high as she could climb up my arm to "whisker kiss" me under
the chin,....then she dropped her head as her body went limp and died.
.....She waited for me to come home to say "goodbye" in her rattie
way.
Again, I was in tears, as I put another loving family member to rest.
For the score,...my last two female ratties went to the Rainbow
Bridge, Two new females had eight babies each, and for all I know,
the last female purchase to keep Sarah company might be pregnant as
well.
I have had it, my nerves are shot. And some people don't understand
to details of how all of this happened. The pet store manager is
irresponsible.

If you have a good vet you could get them spayed if
the babies aren't real old yet. Or you could take
them back to the pet store you got them from. I know
how hard that would be, but if you are unable to care
for that many rats it's an idea. After these rats I'd
either stick to males or only get females from someone
you can trust that hasn't had them in with a male.

To whom it may concern:

I have decided to leave this group for three reasons.

1. This group is not very active anymore. I do appreciate the wealth
of knowledge and kindness some of you have provided.

2. Someone on this group had me take in 10 rats because this person
is "disabled" and could not care for them anymore (I will not even
comment on the shape the rats were in when I got them) and now one
of
their rats has had babies? This sickens me.

3. A rat murderer who has been banned from many rat lists and groups
continues to run a "shelter" of horrors where he (untrained)
continues to perform horrible surgeries on the rats himself. He has
stated on many lists that he kills some of the rats when he is
overwhelmed.

Proof of #3 can be found in many archives of many of the other rat
lists and groups. I have also had conversations with this person
over the phone and was privy to certain information so in no way is
this just a rumor.

Give me a call if you can and I will help you out. This group is not

In my experience I kept the females together. They never hurt each
other. If they are fighting though it would be best to seperate
them, of course. Make sure mom has plenty of protien and try
putting something soft for her to make a nest with. Avoid cotton

sure the spacing is very small, don't want a baby to fall through or
get hung. A tank would be good to keep the mother and babies in if
possible. Also try to hold the babies a little bit everyday. Might
want to wait a couple days for the mom to calm down a bit though.
If you need anything feel free to post it or mail me. Congrats on

How to treat a tumour!

Apologies for the extensive crosspost, I'm posting this to every rat
group and newsgroup that I know, just to try and get the message
across, I hope you understand my reasons.

How many times have you read on a group that someone's rat has been
put to sleep because of a tumour? Upsetting isn't it. Not only is it
disgusting that a vet would put an otherwise healthy animal to sleep,
but it's infuriating to read when you know something can be done.

I thought I should write something about my personal experience with
tumour removal, and what I know of non-surgical treatment in the hope
that it could help someone else's rat. I'm NOT a vet, and it's always
best to seek the advice of your vet before acting on anyone's advice.

First of all, you should know that a tumour is NOT an instant death
sentence for a rat. Most lumps that rats develop are benign (not
cancerous) and can easily be removed.

The first piece of advice that I would like to offer is that you
should ALWAYS make a point of having them removed when the lump is
still small if at all possible. The larger they get, the longer the
rat may have to stay under the anaesthetic meaning more danger to the
rat, and the larger the incision would be, meaning more stitches and
more discomfort for the rat. It's just best to have them out sooner
rather than later. Also, never attempt the surgery yourself, this can
lead to infection which can become very deep and kill.

When you find a lump on your rat, can you be sure it's a tumour?
Could it be an abscess? You need to work that out for starters.
Abscesses can occur anywhere. They're usually but not always caused
by an opening of the skin, through a scratch or bite, that bacteria
has got into, then the wound has closed over it, so the bacteria
festers and creates pus, which causes a swelling under the skin.
These should ideally be treated by a vet, opened, kept open and
cleaned with saline solution (NOT Hydrogen peroxide), and antibiotics
should be given. But I digress.....

Once you're sure your rat does have a tumour, where do you go from
there? Well, as long as your vet is experienced in rat surgery, then
it's quite a straightforward procedure to remove a tumour. As I said
before, most are benign and without much of a blood supply, so it can
be as easy as making a small incision (as long as the tumour is still
small) and popping the lump straight out, then closing with a couple
of stitches. Voila, your rat is delumped!

Complications are rare and the vet will usually know if they are
likely before surgery, although there is always a risk when putting
any animal under anaesthetic. Thankfully most tumour removals take
only a matter of a few minutes.

Complications that can arise are things like the tumour having grown
around an organ, being attached to an organ, or being caused by bone
cancer. Even in those extreme cases, if your vet is good enough,
something can be done.

If your rat is elderly, or has respiratory problems, the vet will
probably not want to operate which leaves you with the idea that
nothing can be done and your beloved pet will eventually have to be
put to sleep. This is NOT the case.

My vet introduced me to a wonderful natural treatment called Mycoplex
Coriolus, which is made from the Coriolus (also known as Turkey Tail)
mushroom. I've used this many times and have had excellent results
with it. It can either slow growth of the tumour, buying time for
recovery from, say, a respiratory infection, so that surgery is
possible, it can stop growth completely, or it has been known to
force the tumour into remission. Nobody is quite sure why it works,
but the way it works is by starving the tumour of it's blood supply,
thereby killing it. Needless to say, the less of a rich blood supply
the tumour has, the less effective Mycoplex will be. In some cases
when there is no blood supply, Mycoplex will not work at all, but
these cases are less frequent. Mycoplex has usually done something
for my rats, however small the effect, and can work against both
benign and malignant tumours. It can work of both benign and
malignant tumours and although it won't actually shrink existing
fatty lumps, it can slow their growth.

Although I've never used it myself, Mycoplex Coriolus can be used in
conjunction with Maxigen 2, (sometimes called Maxigen II) which is
shark cartilage, it works by boosting the effects of the Mycoplex.

Both of these are natural treatments, and cannot be overdosed on, so
are completely safe for your rat. In fact Mycoplex is also used to
boost the body's natural immunity, so is beneficial in other ways as
well.

Mycoplex is also very good to use after the tumour has been
surgically removed, to prevent regrowth. Ideally the Mycoplex should
be started while the tumour is still small for the best effects to be
possible, although I have had some positive results on reasonably
large tumours.

Mycoplex Coriolus can be bought online from here:

http://www.aneid.pt/mrl/products01.html

Further information about Mycoplex can be found here:

http://www.vetsonline.com/html/veterinary_news_article.asp?
ID=786&DType=Veterinary

And here:

http://www.jhsnp.com/store/about_coriolus.html

Maxigen 2 (or II), also known as Shark Cartilage, can be bought here:

http://www.thomasveterinarydrug.com/mailorder/catalog/advanced_search_
result.php?keywords=shark+cartilage

http://www.auravita.com/products/aura/PHAR16645.asp?RefId=800

http://www.solgar.co.uk/modules/shop/view.asp?catid=18&Prodcode=E2600

In the UK, it is sold at the health food shop, Holland and Barrett.

Doseages are as follows:

Mycoplex:

Initially, for the first two weeks of treatment to give a boost, one
quarter of a tablet should be given twice a day, reducing to one
quarter or one fifth of a tablet once a day for the life of the
tumour or rat.

Maxigen:
Should be given alongside the Mycoplex, at a dose of one seventh of a
740mg capsule once a day.

Once the tumour has died, the Maxigen can be stopped completely, and
the dosage of Mycoplex can be reduced to a maintenance dose of one
tenth of a tablet once a day. If the tumour has been surgically
removed, this is also the dose of Mycoplex to help prevent regrowth.
If regrowth or new growth in a different area occurs, then the dose
of Mycoplex is returned to one fifth once a day, and the Maxigen is
restarted at one seventh of a capsule once a day.

The Mycoplex should be crushed into powder, and divided into doses,
each dose then mixed along with the Maxigen (if you're going to give
that as well), into something tasty for the rat. I've used the
following which have all been readily yummed up by my rats:

Strawberry milkshake
Strawberry syrup
Chocolate syrup
Melted ice cream
Chocolate spread

You get the idea. If it's something that they'd consider a huge
treat, then you only need a small amount on the tip of a spoon, just
enough to disguise the powder in, and they'll fall upon it with great
relish.

The only downside to the use of Mycoplex, is that if a tumour dies,
sometimes an abscess will form in it's place, but these are easily
cared for at home, as I indicated at the beginning of this document,
or can easily and cheaply be treated by your vet. Plus the fact that
they're a lot easier to deal with at home than tumours!

I hope you've found this document helpful, I've also uploaded it to
the files section of this group in the hope that it will save
someone`s rat from an unnecessary death. Please save it to your hard
drive if you like, redistribute it as much as you like, I'm all for
spreading the word, as these inexpensive products can save your rat's
life, or certainly extend it.

I have a website which shows tumours after removal, it contains very
graphic images of tumours, and other such things that I've had
removed from my rats, or my friends' rats, but could help you better
understand what it is you're dealing with.

This site can be found at:

Many thanks for reading this, and remember, these animals rely on us
to give them the best care possible, don't give up on them!

It's called "Monoject 412". It is fairly big- at least a 1/2" in
diameter but with a long, curved tip that is so fine on the end it can
EASILY fit into a baby's mouth.

Perhaps a hobby supply shop, online or in a mall. People use the mono
ject for glue dispensing,....good luck Wildflower.

Thank you,...it was an ordeal for all of us! But knowing about one
more thing to watch for, in protecting the little ones, helps.

They have been living in the same cage for a bit now
and finally I saw them cuddling. I hadn't seen them
sleep together or groom each other the whole time they
lived together until a couple days ago. I am so glad.
They used to sleep on different levels. Now both
sleep all cuddled up and I saw them grooming each
other. I was beginning to worry that they didn't like
each other. They didn't fight, they just ignored each
other for the longest time.

I hope everyone's ratties are doing great!

Are you part of the problem? There are too many dogs and cats out there without
homes. Spay or neuter your pets.

Hi,
I found a really good syringe for feeding orphans, from newborns on. It's called
"Monoject 412". It is fairly big- at least a 1/2" in diameter but with a long,
curved tip that is so fine on the end it can EASILY fit into a baby's mouth.

A wildlife rehabber at the SPCA gave me a few when I was struggling to find
something suitable to use to feed the last litter of orphans (actually the
mother abandoned them).

I wouldn't know where to find more of these though. If anybody's interested,
I'll contact the SPCA wildlife person to ask for a source unless someone here
knows where to get them..???

Then I found another very unlikely but excellent "dispenser"--the syringe you
use to shoot air into printer ink cartridges when you refill them. The syringe
comes with the inkjet refill kit. Again, the tip is tiny (but short) & of
course, no ink gets on or in the "thing".

rmca.org has some good info and
http://ratguide.com/care/ is also a good site incase you never
visitied those. Glad to hear your babies are doing better. I have
my two girls in the same cage now. They only power groomed each
other once. They don't seem to care alot for each other though.
One usually stays on one level and the other on the other level. I
am looking for one more girl. I am going to get a female hairless
dumbo (someday soon I hope). Have a great day!
