Q: Does anyone know what the max size bug a small tree frog would
eat: they've just metamorphed from tads and some still have their
tails, they're about 1/2" long at best without the tail.
I see them hopping around looking or waiting but have never seen them
eat anything. I have seen things eat them (blue jays, coyotes, every
imaginable predator is out to get them!).
I try to find bugs to drop near them but it's been dry here and I
haven't seen many small insects, it seems like the insect pop as well
as the frog pop suffers when there's a drought. Not many weeds, so I
figure the bugs that depend on the weeds for mating or larva food
never evolved. I see larger bugs but very few that a tiny frog could
eat. Ladybug larva sometimes crawling around looking for bugs but no
aphids at all, and very few black ants but tons of red ants that
bite. I think those might be too mean for baby frogs, one of those
bit an adult and it squeaked like a mouse in pain.
And Q: how many bugs does a frog need in a day to survive without
starving? Particularly newly metamorphed frogs (they began leaving
the water on Mother's Day).
If anyone can answer this, thanks in advance. I'm not online often
but will try to check back.
