In memory of Okie Allison May 8, 1995 - July 2, 2008
www.renewedlife.org/ebay
Okie Allison raced six times, her maidens, in 1996 at the Dubuque Iowa
track. Allison was adopted and twelve years later surrendered to the
humane society. Renewed Life received a call and Allison was sprung from
the kennel.
She was running a fever probably from the massive infection in her mouth -
her teeth were awful and oozing blood, even her eyes had pus in them. Her
nails were long. She was emaciated to the extreme, not eating, had
diarrhea, and then the vet found a hard mass in her stomach. So the hardest
decision was the kindest. We will never be able to understand people who
have a pet for 12 years, let her live in such poor condition, and then leave
her in a humane society kennel to live in fear for the last days of her
life.
Renewed Life for Greyhounds is running an Ebay auction where 100% of the
money will go to pay Allison's expenses and to help other greyhounds in
need, in memory of Okie Allison. The items in the auction are
FABULOUS....Sarah Snavely art work, unique jewelry - for both human and
hound, a raised feeder from Trendy Pet (featured on ABC's Extreme Home
Makeover) - here is the link again www.renewedlife.org/ebay
Or will you make a donation to help with Allison's vet work and cremation?
Please use the PayPal link on the Renewed Life web site www.renewedlife.org
or mail a check to Renewed Life for Greyhounds, 16245 Van Buren St, West
Olive MI 49460.
Okie Allison, a beautiful brindle girl with a white tipped tail, who raced 6
times, is now a Renewed Life greyhound forever. Please light a candle for
Allison!

Hello Renewed Life Friends,
Every year, Barnes & Noble invites our group to volunteer to gift wrap
purchases for donations at the holidays. Barnes & Noble provides
pretty much everything you would need, such as the paper and tape. The
Rivertown Crossings mall location in Grandville requires that we have
at least four volunteers (two at each exit,) and we could use the help
of anyone willing to donate some time. If you could help us out and
pencil in some time on the dates of December 14 & 15, we would
appreciate it. You'd be working with other greyhound people, and
helping us to raise money to help greyhounds in need.
December 14 is a Sunday, and we will be there all day. December 15,
Monday, we will only be there during the evening hours from 5 to close.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask any of the Renewed
Life board memebers.
Thanks,
Kattie Ronis
Because there are so many retired racing greyhounds in need -
the Woodlands track in Kansas City closed in August leaving many hounds to
move into adoption and a group in Michigan has disbanded leaving many hounds

Maggie a therapy dog ( and others) were taken last week, Maggie was
found but seems this "ring" is working in IL, WI, MI at least for now
STOLEN THERAPY DOG:
*Story on Maggie's Theft and Recovery*
Good Morning ,
Yes she was found on Sunday, 6 days after she was taken. Law
enforcement believe it is a ring of dog thieves that have been
working the Midwest for quite awhile and seem to be very exclusive.
Police were able to link her disappearance to a complaint in southern
Wisconsin of barking dogs and a lot of "night time" activity. From
that complaint they were able to discover the identities of the two people
who matched the description of the ones who took her.
They also got a description of the van.. A dark blue panel van -late
90's Ford Econoline. The tag was only a partial IL tag 598-1 ???
From there the trail led to a Flea Market / Swap meet where a
different police agency had been gathering info that stolen dogs were
being sold..that lead then developed into some background that the
dogs being sold were distributed from a location in the UP of
Michigan.
Yet another police agency involved , and located and abandoned barn
with about 200 dog kennels. There was evidence of recent activity in
the barn.
From there my husband and I took it upon ourselves to canvas the area
which is pretty darn remote. We spent over 18 hours Saturday
afternoon, evening and on into Sunday driving up and down dirt roads,
back into fields you name it we looked there.
Call it Divine providence or intervention but we happened down a very
remote road through a stand of trees and found a dump site piled with
kennels. Our Maggie was there, cold, soaking wet and with some minor
injuries. There was evidence that this location has been used many
times before.. Bodies etc in various states of decay.
This is an on going investigation so I can't be more specific then
that until the police wrap things up , hopefully with some arrests.
A little background on the ring itself: It is believed to be a
supplier of dogs to bunchers who sell to Class B dealers for medical
research.
They also are believed to supply bait dogs for dog fighting rings and
Pit Bull pups as well. The frequently use vans, pick up trucks and
small livestock trailers to transport animals from state to state.
Vans and pickups with camper tops often have the words "ANIMAL
RESCUE" "PET RESCUE" or ANIMAL MANAGEMENT - be aware of these
vehicles in neighborhoods cruising looking for dogs. They frequently
work in teams, man & woman, or two men.
They also change locations frequently and will use abandoned barns,
farms etc to house dogs prior to distribution.
Dr. Eric Heitman in his Holland Sentinel newspaper column last week wrote
about a new specialist veterinary clinic that just opened in Grand Rapids -
"we will now have local access to oncologists, ophthalmologists,
dermatologists, internists, and boarded surgeons"

Dear Friends and Family,
Twenty-two years ago, we adopted our first greyhound, Spinoff, from REGAP of
Connecticut, with the help of Eileen McCaughern.
Eileen has continued adopting out greyhounds for all these years - one at a
time, through thick and thin, she just keeps going. She is in the finals
for Animal Planet Hero of the Year - please vote for her and help greyhounds
everywhere find forever homes!

Meet Eileen McCaughern
Nominated by: Pam Hollifield
She huddled alone in a borrowed tent, tears, mingled with soot, streamed
down her face. The smoke-filled air burned her eyes and lungs. She had
just watched her home completely burn; yet she was thankful because she
saved her 15 cherished greyhounds. Saving greyhounds isn't new to Eileen
McCaughern. She's rescued over 5,000 greyhounds, one at a time.
Eileen pioneered greyhound rescue. In 1973, greyhounds were routinely
destroyed because there were no greyhound rescue groups yet in existence.
Eileen formed REGAP of CT and established this nation's first matching funds
greyhound retirement home. Eileen's efforts gained the attention of
national and local television networks, magazines, newspapers and radio.
Most times, REGAP had more greyhounds than finances, but Eileen persevered,
even when she lost her job. Eileen lobbied for, and received, state grants.
Her home was rebuilt and she found new employment. Things were improving,
or so she thought.
In 2005, the Plainfield Connecticut Greyhound Park announced it would close
forever. Approximately 800 greyhounds had nowhere to go-an almost
insurmountable challenge until Eileen became involved. Eileen, with support
from volunteers and the media, found homes for 200 of the approximately 800
dogs. State grants, funds from the American Greyhound Council, assistance
from businesses and individuals recently enabled Eileen to open a kennel.
Eileen works a full-time job and two part-time jobs to help defray the costs
incurred in rescuing greyhounds.
For anyone searching for a Christmas gift for that hard-to-shop-for
person, boss, neighbors or in-laws, please consider Renewed Life for
Greyhounds' Koeze fundraiser. There are many dogs currently in need of
homes and medical care, and combined with the sluggish economy and
tracks closing, now is a crucial time for greyhounds in need. Koeze
gourmet nuts and fine chocolates are an excellent gift and are helping
Renewed Life raise money when you order products through one of our
board members. Items available for purchase can be found at
http://koeze.com or talk to a Renewed Life board member to see a
catalog. For more information, please contact Kim Sommer at 616-786-

or Deb Myers at 269-637-3657. We will be ending this fundraiser on
November 14th. Products will be delivered starting November 29th.
Thank you from the greyhounds looking for forever homes, and have a
wonderful holiday season.
Just a quick reminder for all friends of Renewed Life for Greyhounds.
Renewed Life continues to raise money in these poor economic times, because
it is in poor economic times that the hounds need us even more. There are
appeals to help hounds often right now - track and farm closings, greyhounds
returned because their families have fallen on hard times, and Massachusetts
just banned greyhound racing which will mean more hounds in the next year
will have to absorbed by other tracks and/or adoption groups, so if you can
help the greyhounds in any way in any of the following fundraisers, you
will be making our world a better place for retired racing greyhounds!

Attempted Dog-knapping in Grand Rapids this week !!!

Date: Wed May 20, 2009 8:20 pm ((PDT))
Permission to forward / cross post. Please share this with any pet owners
you know in the Grand Rapids area.
This was received tonight, Wed, May 20th. Thank you, Laurel
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laurel
I teach dog obedience classes in East Grand Rapids even though I now
live in Ionia. My cousin who lives across from Ottawa Hills (The old one
just outside EGR, that is being torn down) has a dog in my class, and she
had a scary story she told the class tonight.
She was out in her front yard doing some gardening work, and had her
dog clipped on a chain on her front porch (only because she was right out
there with her). She saw a van going slowy up & down the street, stopping
from time to time - she did not pay too much attention as she thought he was
delivering newspapers, magazines, phone books, etc.- something of the sort.
Then he stopped in front of her house, opened the side door, and then
walked up to her dog, not realizing her owner was only a few feet away. He
had dog biscuits, and petted her. Then, after making sure she was friendly,
he leaned over to unclip her collar.
At that point Mary stood up and yelled "What the hell do you think you
are doing!?!" He ran back to his van, took off very fast, side door still
open, and blew the stop sign at the corner! She was unable to get the plate
number but did make a police report. She said the van was a red color,
and she thought a Voyager or Caravan.
SO - PLEASE SPREAD THIS WORD TO ALL IN GR, ESPECIALLY THE SOUTH EAST
SIDE - IF YOU SEE A RED MINIVAN CHECKING THINGS OUT IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD,
GET THE PLATE NUMBER AND WATCH HIM - ESPECIALLY IF ANYONE HAS A DOG LOOSE OR
ACCESSIBLE TO HIM! PLEASE KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN & STAY ALERT - WE DONT WANT
SOMEONE'S PRECIOUS PET STOLEN & SOLD.

Warning: AFRIN Nasal Spray (Oxymetazoline HCl) Toxic to Pets
Date: Mon Jun 29, 2009 9:53 am ((PDT))
Received the following email from a friend. Hope the information can keep
another pet from having a similar experience.
Pam and The Pups
I had a very close call with one of my whippets recently, and wanted to
put out a warning about the toxicity of Oxymetazoline HCl, the active
ingredient in AFRIN and some other over-the-counter nasal decongestant
sprays.
Even a small amount in their mouth (it is absorbed through mucous
membranes,
they do not even need to swallow any!) can cause a *lethal* drop in blood
pressure and heart rate in just a very few hours. Nausea usually is the
first
symptom.
I found my dog (Whippet) chewing on a bottle of Afrin just before bedtime
- there was a wet spot where most of the liquid had leaked onto the bed.
She started vomiting about 20 minutes later, and about an hour after that
her
gums suddenly went almost white. I got her to an emergency clinic ASAP,
where her blood pressure was so low, they were unable to get a reading.
Fortunately, there is an antidote - Antisedan - which most vet hospitals
have. That plus IV fluids and medication for the nausea stabilized my dog
fairly quickly.
And fortunately, if they survive the immediate crisis, the Oxymetazoline
HCl only lasts in their system about 24 hours (they may need repeated doses
of the antidote throughout that period), and it apparently has no lasting
effects (no kidney or liver damage, etc).
I was very lucky - my dog was home from the hospital in about 24 hours,
and hasn't looked back. But I never dreamed that stuff was so very toxic to
dogs, and wanted to send out a warning to all to keep any human meds, even
common over-the-counter ones, well out of reach of pets (including bedside
nightstand drawers!)
Many thanks to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center for their
assistance. Every pet owner should keep their phone number handy - minutes
can count
when a pet has been exposed to something potentially toxic!! There is a
fee, but it is well worth it when a life may be at stake. 888-426-4435.
Please go enter that number in your cell phones and post it on your
refrigerator ASAP.
Please feel free to cross post.

the first text area, and "Life" in the second. It should bring up our name.
You can also order Gift Certificates, which are great for that hard-to-shop-for
person in your life, or as wedding gifts.
Our Renewed Life Pampered Chef party runs now through Sunday, July 12.
November 21st is the date of the annual Hudsonville Holiday craft show where we
will be having our bake sale. If there is a homemade baked good, fudge, or
dessert that you will be willing to donate, we at Renewed Life would appreciate
it. The Craft Show/Bake Sale runs from 9AM - 3PM at Hudsonville High School.

Hello,
Are the homemade baked goods limited to human treats only?

Because there are so many retired racing greyhounds in need -
Renewed Life for Greyhounds is selling Brecks' flower bulbs to raise money to help greyhounds. You may get a catalog by email or if you would like a print catalog to sell the bulbs to your family, friends, and co-workers, please send an email to staff@... , or reply to me and they will be emailed or snail mailed to you. The bulbs will be mailed directly to the customer.
To place an order, give a correct, legible address and payment to a
Renewed Life for Greyhounds representative or mail your order, address and payment to 4615 Castle Court, Holland MI 49423. Make checks payable to Renewed Life for Greyhounds. Order deadline is September 26th, 2009.
The greyhounds will thank you for your effort!
When your flowers bloom next spring, you will be beautifully reminded of the help you gave retired racing greyhounds!

Dear Friends of Renewed Life~
The RLfG bake sales have created a following of sweets lovers....
It is that time of year again! The Hudsonville Lions Club is sponsoring a
holiday craft fair and we have been invited to do the bake sale - booth 89.
It will be Saturday, November 21st from 9 to 3, with set up beginning at
6:30am in Hudsonville High School, located at 5037 32nd Avenue, Hudsonville
MI 49426.
If you can bake or help in any way, please contact Kim Sommer at
616-786-3430,
Please package baked goods ready to sell ....like cookies in packages of
half dozen or a dozen....last year the loaves of sweet breads went over
well.
Drop off baked goods Friday before the sale,
or bring them to the high school the day of the sale.
Contact Kim to drop off baked goods.
The profits of this RLfG bake sale will help RLfG foster greyhounds
who are older and have multiple veterinary bills,
as well as pay veterinary work for other greyhounds in need.
If you are too far away or too busy to prepare sweets for this year's bake
sale, please consider sending a tax deductible monetary donation to RLfG's
"No Bake Sale" :-), as it also will help the hounds! Donate though Paypal
at
www.renewedlife.org or mail contributions to:
Renewed Life for Greyhounds,
16245 Van Buren
Street, West Olive MI 49460.
Please forward this email on to anyone you think may be interested!

Renewed Life has 2010 Celebrating Greyhound calendars
waiting to grace your home with beautiful pictures of greyhounds
everyday next year!!!
They are $12.00.
If you would love to see these pictures everyday in 2010,
email kim @ fastjack.com.
This is another RLfG fundraiser that is needed especially
this year, as Dairyland, the last greyhound track in Wisconsin
is closing the end of 2009, leaving hundreds of greyhounds
looking for homes.
RLfG will be raising money this fall
through the bake sale, the calendars, gift wrapping, Koeze
nut sale, etc. All of the profits will be used to pay
for veterinary work for the Dairyland greyhounds, who need
homes! If you can help with these efforts,
please email staff @ renewedlife.org
or send a donation to:
