The shy-k9s mailing list is for the discussion of shy, fearful and/or fear-aggressive dogs and positive solutions to their problems. We do not discuss traditional training, nor do we support the "dominance" approach to training. Topics that come up frequently are genetic factors, fear periods, the pros and cons of various training and management methods (in general as well as in the context of specific cases), identifying and interpreting behaviors, understanding thresholds and their significance to rehabilitation, building confidence and resilience, the fallacy that "comforting" shy dogs reinforces fear and the fallout of punishment as a teaching tool. We also discuss books, videos, seminars, food plans, and herbal and pharmacological treatments that may be helpful in modifying behavior.

You are welcome to join this list if you are an owner, trainer, behaviorist, or rescue or shelter worker dealing with these traits in dogs, and are strongly encouraged to contribute your experiences, whether with your own dog or in a professional capacity.
