There is a scheduled TTRG ride this Saturday also.

It will be held in the forest on FM 2666 still, so new folks, don’t get confused.

Not sure how many are camping out there, but anyone who needs a place nearby is welcome to camp the night before at my place and trailer up the next morning. I’m south of the site, so it is like stopping on the way.

The ground there is good and firm even after the rains and the ponds are full now & really looking good!

Looking forward to seeing everyone there that can make it up!

Hey Everyone...we are having a day ride this Saturday

is anyone else planning to camp at the trail head that night? I would be coming
up with one of my kiddos to ride/camp but dont want to camp there alone with all
the hunters coming/going and such. I would feel more comfortable if several of
us horsey people were camped together, lol.

This one ie nicer than mine.....

Walmart also has a cute belt clip one I use a LOT. Not the greatest focus, and
no bells or whistles like zoom or flash, and it only holds 25 pics you have to
download before the batteries go out or it erases them all. You can't beat the
$17 pricetag, though, and it takes just one AAA battery (I use rechargeable
Lithiums in mine). Clips on your belt, too, so easy to carry on rides and quick
to get out and shoot, too. I love it for quick wildlife and horse shots around
the barn. It's the only way I've been able to catch my kids doing their
tricks--it always seems to take too long to get a regular camera, or too long to
get a better pixel one to take the picture.

This is the poured minerals I use. I do not put them out in the summer because the horses do not really eat them. In the winter they love them. On days that it is pouring rain I do not feed and with these out I do not worry about their nutrition. I get the 200 # tubs.

Just out of curiosity, are you referring to the Dumor Block? I've heard folks
complain that those are so yummy horses will eat them in a day or so instead of
them lasting for days or even months as intended. Or is this like one of those
barrel thingys like they have for cows with all the molasses in them?

Personally, I was thinking of getting one of those, but I've found it better to
break those or the crumbly salt licks up and put them directly into moistened
feed. The horses seem to like the feed better, and I know how much salt,
vitamins and minerals they are getting, without blocks salting up my pasture
with each rain or being ignored by the horses, who would rather lick every rusty
bit of steel in the pasture than lick those red blocks. Not to forget to
mention it is much cheaper than the mineral mixes you find in the feed stores.

I'll second that.
Years ago I read a really good article in John Lyons' Perfect Horse about
salt and mineral blocks. And that info I learned has been reinforced on my
Equine Cushing's group where equine nutrition expert Dr. Eleanor Kellon also
recommends white salt only and not the mineral blocks.

The issue is that mineral blocks may not be in the right mineral amounts to
help with their diet and maybe even hurt. For instance the iron content can
be very problematic for IR horses. The other thing is no mineral mix is
going to match your hay, grass and feed. Ideally we should analyze all that
our horses eat and calculating the mineral ratios. Then either custom mix
your mineral supplements or checking the contents of the commercially
available supplements to see if one of them fits without wrong ratios being
created. This is taught in some of Dr. Kellon's online nutrition courses if
anyone is really interested in digging into nutrition.
http://www.drkellon.com/coursedescriptions.html

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now :-)

I am a strong believer of only using the white salt blocks and have been
very successful with that.

I keep out the white (salt), Yellow (sulfur) and Mineral and yes they are for horses as well.... the big controversy years ago (and the ole urban legend stays and stays) was not the mineral content was bad for horses but that their tongues would become lacerated.  Well that is all we have ever fed and in my 43 years of life I have never seen a bleeding tongue on a horse from a mineral block and granddaddy fed them for a lot longer....he never had one either...

So the blocks are fine and so are the horses tongues....

North American Salt- - Trace Mineralized Salt Block (per their site)
http://doitbest.com/Equine+Nutrition-North+American+Salt-model-41018-doitbest-sku-708887.dib  Extremely weather-resistant. This 50 lb. Big 6 block is excellent for weight gain, feeding efficiencies, and overall herd performance. Big 6 contains the 6 core micro minerals - zinc, manganese, cobalt, copper, iodine, and iron - required for basic animal health. Formulated for all classes of beef and dairy cattle, pigs, and horses.

i received this from another list i am on and thought it good to pass on to you guys - this isn't anything i've checked on personally but this may be something to be careful of:
I found Tuffy down yesterday and put in an emergency colic call to the vet.  They came and diagnosed an extreme impaction and decompressed 3 2-gallon buckets of gunk and blood.  I loaded her and took her to my vet's clinic.  After 2 hours of scoping her, sedating her and loading her with banamine and rectal palptation, she was deteriorating RAPIDLY and still convulsing and gasping for air from the pain.

They hung her IV bags in my trailer and I ran her 2 hours south to Wellington wherre they did an emergency surgery with only a 10% expectation of her making it and a 90% expected outcome of having to euthanize her on the table.

THANK GOD, she made it .  She had a foregut (duodenal obstruction) which turned out to be a big chunk of a forage block that I put out for them and they lick and nibble on.   Somehow she got off a chunk the size of my fist and gulped it whole and that sucker turned to clay in there.

DO NOT USE THOSE *^$#(^$# FORAGE/MINERAL BLOCKS!!!   (The kind that are tan in color and crumbly in nature (versus rock hard like usual red or white mineral blocks) and meant to be put out for horses on pasture as a supplement forage/mineral type deal.)

That forage block damn near killed my buddy that I have had since she was a filly and expected to have another 25-30 years God willing (they said if I had found her 2 hours later, she would have been dead) and put her thru an unnecessary amount of EXTREME pain and trauma.  She will be laid up on stall rest for 8 weeks.

The bill for the surgery clinic alone is at $12,000 today and still mounting.   The local vet emergency call bill was $520.  She will be in the ICU for three more days, maybe longer.

All of this pain, suffering, tragedy and devasting financial blow over an $8 hunk of crap forage block.   Beware & pass it on!

Yes, my horses would take bites out of theses as well and big chunks... I do not feed the brown (paperbag color) block that is crumbly - can break off pieces with bare hands.

Mineral blocks are fine and have been used for many, many years with no known (to me anyhow) issues for horses and cattle... they are a bit high in content for some sheep though.

The original poster did make the distinction between the mineral and forage blocks...
