I had my first hamster in a tank and then found out how much he loved to
climb so I got him a cage with levels.

Carol, you keep a single rat in one of those types of cage?

Adriana, I have my hamster in the second one linked, he does great in it. In
my opinion, the first one is too small. Some people say the wire bottom is
hard on their feet, you'd have to see how your boy does.

You are welcome. If her droppings are normal I wouldn't worry about wet tail.
You would know if she had wet tail because her bottom would very wet and the
stench would be horrible. Enough to make you want to vomit. Not only that they
get dehydrated and have no appetite. In addition they almost act as if they were
drunk. Limit any wet foods u may be giving her. When you notice loose stools.
Just remember that our furry friends usually only live about 2 years. But at the
first sign of wet tail get her to the vet!!!

It must be a hamster thing. I have had several hamsters and they all did that.
Maybe it is because it has a smell of hormones even if the toilet is clean. God

Hi Monique, my Syrian hamster Koko is now 1 year and 9 months old so
will be 2 in February also. He has slowed down a lot in the last few
months. When he was a pup he was standing up and ready to roll/in his
ball every evening at 8. Then he seemed to want to sleep and come out
only every 2nd or 3rd night. In the past 3 weeks he has only come out
to play in his ball 4 times. Otherwise he stays inside the top of his
volcano covered with a toilet paper blanket. lol. I wake him at noon
for veggies and he gets up stretches and walks to his bowl to eat.
Again at night, when I go to bed I give him 3 new toilet paper sheets
and he gets up to arrange these. I think a lot of the inactivity is
because they do not feel hungry or cold , so no need to get up to find
food and bedding, we give it to them. Whether this lack of activity
will prolong or shorten their life, I don't know. Koko was my first
hamster and now I have another as well. Ziggy is a long haired
Syrian and he is still in the playful puppy stage. It is sad that
their lives are so short and I try to make it as good as I can for
them. Half my bedroom is a hamster playground with 2 tanks, a villa
with a fence surrounding them, all set on top of my house rabbit
Tango's dog crate. And then someone gave me a medium sized desk so it
is sitting beside their tanks just waiting for me to make a hammy
playground on top of it:-)

Hello all from Herbieland!

Well, little girl is going to be two in February. I've noticed her interests
have weened.  She's not really into her chew toys anymore, she loves the
hideatreat boxes, and and she doesn't run in her wheel as much.

She's healthy as she eats and drinks well, her teeth are fine, loves her ball,
but it seems like she's starting to slow down a little bit.

I just find that depressing, especially since their life span is only 2 or 3
years.

Has anyone with an old hamster or previous hamsters noticed the same thing?

-Monique

I would not recommend that cage to my worst enemy. I had that cage for my
first hamster and it was a PAIN to clean and the cage didn't stay together
well. The wired sides didn't want to go back into the plastic grooves after
the first two cleanings, so it made the levels hard to clean because when I
took the levels out, the sides would fall apart. lol By the time a year had
passed, the top plastic was duct taped to the wire and plastic sides
underneath it so my hamster wouldn't escape! I paid way too much money for
that cage to just toss it when it could be kept together and used, but it
was definitely not something I would have kept using if there wasn't the
money issue. That cage is too expensive for what it is. I got my hamster a
large "bin" or Rubbermaid container and cut the middle out of the lid and
adhered mesh wire to the lid so he couldn't escape. It works like a charm!
He can dig and climb around and he loves it. It's easy to clean and there
are no ventilation issues. That was sooo much cheaper than the super pet
cage, too.

I can't tell you how many headaches I experienced through trying to decently
clean that super pet cage or finding my hamster when he got between the
faulty plastic/wire many times a night.

I would recommend an aquarium, like was suggested, or a home made bin, Don't
waste your money on those super pet cages, they're not worth the time or
aggravation.

Megan.

Adriana,
We have an elder syrian. Ran into the same problem when he grew out of
"puphood". SuperPet makes a large cage one story cage for rats. Wire top with
a large, plastic tray on the bottom. It has a shelf that you can adjust it's
height. We had buy a water bottle seperately. We also got a Silent Spinner
wheel. It's worked beautifully.
Hope that helps.
Julie

coukd get him a new cage, but i noticed he could fall off his third level from
almost two feet! This one seemed safer to me:

Hello all,
I haven't posted in quite a while, but am always reading the words of wisdom
posted here.
Do hamster's fur turn grey as they age?
We have a long haired Syrian who is orange and white. He will be two years old
come this December. His orange fur is dulling and loosing color, it has almost
a silver tone to it.
He's eating, drinking, pooping, etc. No behavioral changes just slowing down.
I know he's already in his "golden" years and life expectancy is about 2-3
years. Just wondering if this is abnormal and I should be seeing the vet or
adding something to his diet?
Thanks!
Julie

Have you thought of maybe a 20 gal aquarium?  I had one for my hammie Mr. Chewy
and he loved it...lots of room to run around and more room to put some toys.

Tina

Hi all! I'm a brand new member, and I need some expert advice! The shelter I
volunteer at got in a hamster the other day whose right eye didn't develop fully
and his top right incisor also is barely there. Not much to do about that, I
figure, besides a cool eyepatch, but he also has some serious dandruff-looking,
waxy stuff on his skin and ears. He seems happy and healthy enough, but I'm
afraid he'll be euthanized because he looks sick, even if he's not. I know
enough not to bathe him, and to try sand, not dust, but will it help? Should I
trim his fur? I tried combing him, and it helped a little. I know lots about
rats, but nothing about hamsters. His skin looks like a rat's I had who couldn't
groom himself, if that helps any. But I could bathe the rat! All advice much
appreciated!!!
Amy
