Hello I am using the small ocean zoo aquarium and I was wondering how
to aeriate the aquarium when I thought of getting a dropper from my
dad's lab to pump air in. Is that all right, or should I use
something diffrent?

Hey guys,

I just got my sea monkeys about a month ago and I have a few
questions. I have been putting oxygen in their tank by swishing the
water back and forth between their tank and a starel jar. I was
wondering if there is a time where you are supposed to stop doing
this. Will I be doing this for as long as they are alive or should I
stop after they become a certain age? It became a concern of mine
because I was doing this today and one of them died so I was
wondering if I was hurting them because they are too old for me to be
swishing them around. My other concern is about how much to feed
them. Everyone says that if the water is cloudy then you are feeding
them too much. But after I swish the water in their tank to give them
oxygen, all of the slim (waste, uneaten food, etc.) makes the water
cloudy for about an hour and then it goes away. Does this mean that I
am feeding them too much or do they mean that the water has to be
cloudy all the time to indicate that I am feeding them too much? If
anyone knows the answers, please help! I love my sea monkeys and I
want to take care of them the best way I can!

Your sea monkey pal,

Ben Dover

I've found one tablespoon of rock salt per liter of water is a good
ratio for hatching and raising brine shrimp. Sarah

I was roaming the directory and came across your club. I'm not sure
if i'm in the right place because I don't raise brine shrimp as pets
(I feed mine to my baby fish). If I offend any of those that keep
them as pets, I'm sorry.
I have some questions about how to keep them till adulthood.
Lighting, temperature, feeding, or any other useful info on keeping
these tiny creatures. I was told they do best in a sunny window,
but, where my house is located, I don't have a decent place. I
cannot get any algae growth because of this factor and was wondering
if there is anything I can do to stimulate algae growth without
direct sunlight. As of right now, about 90% die after 24 hours of
hatching. I've tried different amounts of salt, temps., and
lighting. Thanks for any help, and again, if I'm in the wrong place,
feel free to let me know and I'll unsubscribe.

Hi, I used to own the small-size aquariums that are sold in malls . I was
wondering, how do you clean those things? I had no clue how to take care of my
sea monkeys... I was in high school after all.

hello everyone - im so pleased to find a site devoted to my new
found sweethearts.
my other half bought me a kit as part of my xmas pressies and a
couple of days later i decided i was sober enough to start the new
family off.

as usual i did not read the instructions and threw packs one and two
together in about three times the correct amount of water!!!!!

couple of days later, there they were tiny babes darting about - man
i so pleased, i was just about to trhow em down the pan and start
again.

well ive around 30 likkle sprites swimming about in a pickling jar
now.

Questions.
because if my ignorance at the outset, will they survive in so much
water?
can i put things into the jar to give them a more homely existence
and me a more pleasant view?
any hints, tips and advice for a first time sea monkey dad would be
really welcome!

thanks guys

Hi Nicole!

Yes she did! When we walked into the room and I saw the little
babies on the television screen, my eyes lit up and my jaw dropped!
I was excited! I thought, if the guide asks us if we know what they
are, I'll say they're Brine Shrimp, to not sound like a dork by
saying "sea monkeys." She said..."Some of you may know what these
little guys are... They're sea monkeys, as some of you may have at
home...Also known as brine sprimp." That put an ever bigger smile on
my face! :O)

Hi Tania,

Did the guide actually refer to the brine shrimp as Sea-Monkeys at the Long

A few days ago I went to the Long Beach Aquarium and took their
behind the scenes tour. They showed us the room in which they raise
sea monkeys for food for some of the aquatic animals they have. They
start of with a pink block that is larger than a loaf pan. They wet
it and cultivate it in a refrigerator and then move it to some
acrylic tanks where the block is disolved into liquid (don't know the
solution) and everything gets mixed up. You can barely see the sea
monkeys in there because they are being swooshed around so quickly.
They had some newly hatched sea monkeys in a dish under a microscope
which was connected to a television so we could see the little guys.
And on a table next to a blender was a rubbermaid plastic pitcher
loaded with many many sea monkeys. Especially pregnant females. And
they were all pink like shrimp. I had never seen so many!!! I asked
what it is they are fed but unfortunately the tour guide didn't have
the answer. How I wish I could have brought some home!

I started up my sea monkeys in March and currently have 3 adult
males, 1 adult and 2 young females. The adult female is pregnant. As
soon as she passes, I'll be putting her in another container and hope
her eggs hatch. Once those babies are a good size, I'll transfer
them back into the their little fish bowl. I recently cleaned out the
bottom of the bowl and placed everything into a sea monkey pen and I
drained out the fluid and allowed everything to dry up. I then
filled up the pen and gave it a little shake and now I have 4 or 5
little babies swimming about. I'll wait until they're bigger to move
them in with the others. One think I don't like though is a white
film that develops on top of the water and around the bowl. Would it
be ok to remove it, or should I leave it? Do any of you feed your
sea monkeys anything other than the sea monkey food? I'd love for
mine to be pink instead of beigh.

When I started up my sea monkeys, the died as well. I thougt it was
because I layerd the bottom of the bowl with some tiny gravel. I
figured they had died due to some type of bacteria or something. So I
sent in my guarantee for a free replacement and tried again without
the gravel and used some glass pebbles instead. The second batch died
as well! I was going to give up but found a sea monkey kit in the
toy section at Sav-on and decided to give it one more shot and it
worked! I had many babies in the beginning and then only had a few
but I still have some and my only adult female is pregnant. So
hopefully I'll have more soon. The only water I use to start them off
and to replace any that has evaporated, is distilled water.
Good luck on the 3rd try!

Hello everyone,

I'm Rob and here's what I did:

After studying how these beasties live in their natural environment
(huge lakes) I promptly bought a 2 gallon fish tank for them. Once
started this has some serious benefits.

a) The big plus is that because of the larger volume of water, there
is little room for "error". The tiny tanks you get with the kits
need more care as the slightest upset in the water balance can cause
problems.

b) They can swim further!

c) Ornaments! Mine has a stone triceratops head in that airs the
water for them, as well as some hoops and some fake plants (real
ones wouldn't survive!) Oh, and gravel/sand.

Basically, I added clean gravel and then ordinary tap water. A
couple of drop of water conditioner (from any decent aquarium) to
remove the metals and chlorine. Leave for a day.

Next, I added a mix called Instant Ocean (www.aquariumsystems.com).
This salt mix you can get from decent aquariums too and is free from
nitrates and phosphates.
I had no idea of how much to put in, but it doesn't have to be exact
(the great salt lakes aren't!). I used my taste buds initially
(it's only salty water), then added a couple of packs of sea
diamonds. I was happy when the diamonds hovered about an inch from
the tank floor. this also allows for different levels of salt, and
you can see the layers almost like a mist.

That was that. I got a filter system, but YOU MUST NOT USE IT!
It is the job of the sea monkeys to clean the water! That is what
mother nature made them for: to clean the salt lakes.
Instead, cut the tube to the actual filter, and place the pumice
stone from the aerator onto the end of the pipe. Voila, an oxygen
feed! (if it gets too turbulent then you can get a valve from an
aquarium to vary the oxygen)
Adding a filter will suck their food supplies dry!

I singled out a few monkeys and put them in a glass with their
original water. I then slowly began adding some of the new water
mix to test. 2 hours later all the monkeys were in their new home
twisting and turning and digging through the gravel.

Feeding. I just dump half a packet in at once! The water is
constantly oxygenated, and they don't need feeding for weeks!
There are other foods easily available too.

If you dare do this, you will see your pets in a totally different
light. some might think it's more hassle than it's worth, but once
done you only have to watch them and not worry...

I am going offline now. Shall I continue later, anyone?

Rob

Dear Rob,

That is FASCINATING! I'm definitely going to try your method. They are great
little creatures, and you get used to watching one, and the next thing you know,
you are attached to the little guy (or gal). The pet shop is gonna love me in a
few weeks (have to wait for my financial aid to try it). :)

God bless you. Sincerely, Lorelei, James, and Jimmy

Dear Jin,

Congratulations on your baby sea monkeys! I've heard that it is actually better
to add the Plasma three days after, that way even more babies will make it
adulthood.

I have cleaned my sea monkey tanks in the past, but this time I'm going to leave
things alone. I figure it's a part of their little ecosystem, and the decaying
matter may provide extra food for them. Remember, sea monkeys are hybrid
shrimp, and they are scavengers.

I've never ordered T-shirts from Transcience, so I can't comment on that.

Hi folks,

Can someone either describe what the executive sea monkey kit looks
like or post a photo of it? I can't find a photo of it anywhere on
the web.

Hi to you

I tried adding a packet of eggs to an already-established tank. My
advice is don't bother. Nothing much happened. A few young did hatch
but they didn't survive beyond 4 or 5 days. It also seems that
newborn
from established females don't make it for too long either. I did add
plasma but it didn't seem to make much difference.
I have never cleaned this tank (it's been going about six months now)
and I'm wondering whether this is the reason. There is a serious
amount of deposit at the bottom and any movement clouds up the whole
tank. The adults have no problem at all. In fact the biggest male
(Errol) is the biggest sea monkey I've ever seen. There are only a
half-dozen or so in this tank and I may transfer them to tank2 just
so
I can get the gunk sucked up without fear of causing injury.
My advice for the bigger tank? Just be relaxed and go for it. I may
well try it too...

Joe

have one tank, and I'm not sure if I'll be getting another one in the
near future or not, but I wonder what would happen if I started
adding
the de-ionized water to bring the water level up as it evaporates,
then add another packet of babies (assuming the population isn't
quite
what it could be), and adding another packet of plasma three days
after. Has anyone ever tried this?

know some people prefer not to... I was thinking about getting a
gallon sized goldfish bowl, a very small filter, and very carefully
measuring out the water and adding just the right amount of water
purifier packets. The smaller filters usually have the air stone
plugged right into it, and that would continuously aerate the tank.
I've been thinking about doing this for some time. I wonder if it
would work. The only downside is if the sea monkeys got sucked into
the filter. My mom used to have fish tanks, and we covered the
filters with nylons every time one of the fish had babies so that the
fry wouldn't get killed by the filters.

Rob

Dear Joe,

Have you added eggs after adding the plasma? That is very interesting the way
you've made it possible for more babies to live longer. I'll have to try that
with my next tank. Right now I just have one tank, and I'm not sure if I'll be

Has anyone ever tried this?

Also, do you clean your tank, and if so, what method do you use? I know some

In my past attempts, I've had limited success using boiled tap water,
bottled water etc.
I've now taken to using de-ionized water (the kind used in car
batteries etc) and have had excellent results. Many more sea monkeys
make it to maturity. Then again I have taken to using a packet and a
half of eggs per tank too and adding a plasma packet after 3 days 8c)

Happy rearing
Joe
