My lab had a one of these warts when she was a puppy and it fell right off.  I hear it's pretty common with pups especially those who socialized with other dogs.

My puppy got Canine Papillomas Virus (aka Puppy Warts) from the Shirlington Dog Park over the last couple of weeks. If you have a puppy (under 12 months) who has been to the park and drank from the communal dog bowls, keep an eye on your puppy's gums and lips. The vet says he got it from drinking from the communal water bowl after another pup who had it. It is highly contagious although it is not at all harmful - just very ugly.

Just an FYI for everyone.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have any information on the status of the Canine Flu ( Influenza Virus H3N8)? I got an email from my vet alerting me to this outbreak that forced the Fairfax Animal Shelter to close for a few days. They recommend having my do vaccinated. I'm worrying about my dog catching something when he mingles with other dogs at the park so I haven't taken him for a couple of weeks. But he misses it.

Thanks.

H!

I wanted to make sure you knew the Leo, the lost border collie, was recovered! For those of us involved, the capture was actually quite fun. It occurred last Wednesday night/Thursday morning, and you can find information and pictures of Leo on his blog – findleo.blogspot.com

Thank you so much for your support during the search for Leo. As we’d already learned, but we proved it once again – “it takes a village” applies to the search for a lost dog! That village did spring up around him, and we appreciate your being a part of it.

Thank you to everyone who helped out Saturday. A great job was done removing
the dirt from along the fence where the path floods after a rain and in filling
in the large holes that have been collecting water. Also thanks to Mitch at
Muddy Mutts who supplied beverages to the volunteers. Unfortunately a lot of
people are still not picking up after their dogs and not disposing properly in
the large trash bins. If you see this happening please point it out to the
dog's owner. The dog park rules and important phone numbers are posted on the
bulletin board as well as handouts on the side facing the shed. Thanks.

Thanks to all who attended the Shirlington CCA sponsoring group meeting.
Special thanks to Jose Chavez for providing his truck for the last bag pick up
from the Washington POST. We will be having a cleanup at the park on Saturday
July 11 at 9:00 AM. Please come and help keep the park clean. Besides picking
up trash and dog waste we will be filling in the several holes and spreading
wood chips as well as doing other landscaping. Please bring work gloves and if
you can shovels and rakes. The folks at The Muddy Mutt dog wash on S. Oxford
will be providing water for the workers. We should be done in a couple of hours
if enough folks volunteer. We will also be collecting monetary contributions to
be used for maintenance materials and future poop bag purchases. See you on the
11th.

While this article claims that sediment and vegetation will be removed from the
creek bed, remember that last time, several large trees were removed that were
a good 5 feet into the CCA on solid land not in the channel but in the CCA.
Please be on the look out and report any removal from the CCA because it
will increase the erosion along the banks of the park.  SUZ

Four Mile Run Channel Maintenance

Beginning in late June, Arlington County and the City of Alexandria will conduct maintenance work, including the removal of excessive vegetation and sediment along the Four Mile Run flood control channel. This maintenance effort is required to ensure flood protection for residents and businesses along lower Four Mile Run.
Background
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) constructed the Four Mile Run flood control channel, which extends from I-395 to the stream’s mouth at Ronald Reagan National Airport, in the 1970s following several devastating floods in the Arlandria area. USACE designed the flood channel to a width and depth sufficient to carry Four Mile Run’s flows during major rain events. Over time, sand and gravel build up in the channel, and plants grow on the sandbars, lowering the channel’s capacity for carrying the floodwaters produced by large rain events.  To ensure the protection of homes and properties adjacent to the flood control channel and ensure the structural stability of the flood protection measures, Arlington County and the City of Alexandria periodically must remove the sandbars and vegetation from the channel and in close proximity to the levees and floodwalls, in order to maintain the channel’s capacity for safely carrying floodwaters.
What Residents Will See
Starting in late June, residents will see crews and construction equipment working in or near Four Mile Run, removing trees, shrubs, and other vegetation growing in the channel. Sand and gravel deposits may be removed in specific locations as well, depending on the amount of accumulation since the last dredging occurred in 2008.  While measures will be taken to reduce the amount of sediment that becomes re-suspended in the stream channel, residents may see some brown-ish discoloration of the water as sediment is removed and for a short period of time afterward.  The sediment and plant material may be temporarily stockpiled in locations adjacent to the stream before it is loaded onto trucks for recycling or disposal.  The herbicide, Rodeo, which is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for application on invasive weeds and emergent vegetation along water bodies, will be used sparingly.
Future Plans
Arlington County and the City of Alexandria are working to limit the need for such maintenance in the future. The County and the City have partnered with the USACE and the Northern Virginia Regional Commission on the Four Mile Run Restoration Project, in an effort to return natural stream processes to the flood channel corridor, while also maintaining flood protection. The restored stream will reduce sediment deposition within the corridor and also will include vegetation appropriate for a flood control channel. The current channel maintenance activities relate to an existing maintenance agreement with USACE and not the restoration project.
Additional Information
For more information about the Four Mile Run Restoration Project, contact Laura Grape (NVRC - 703-642-4625),  Jason Papacosma  (Arlington County),  or Craig Perl  (City of Alexandria).

There are water quality tests done on a frequent schedule in 4MR
Test results prior to this weekend's rain showed that quality was back to the
test results prior
to the sewage spills.

Persons and pets who use the stream should continue to heed the stream
guidelines posted
on the bulletin board at the cca and on the county website.

While the water may look cool and inviting on a warm day 4MR is an urban stream.
Urban streams are sourced by the runoff from lawns, sidewalks, driveways, storm
drains and
parking lots.

There have been a lot of instances recently of folks not picking up after their
dogs. If the Shirlington CCA (Dog Park) is to remain open everyone must take
responsibility in making sure all dog waste is picked up and disposed of
properly in one of
the large containers. One of the rules of the CCAs is that handlers must have
their
dog(s) in sight at all times. This is not only for your dog's safety but it is
the only way to
make sure you see to pick up after your dog each time. Also, if you see that
someone has
not picked up after their dog please bring it to their attention. This holds
true for trash
left by humans as well. Thank you for your help.

Friday January 18th I took my dog to the Jennie Dean Dog park. He was
being harassed by a larger dog. (My dog is about 60 pounds.) The dog
that was being aggressive to him then knocked me down flat on the
ground into the mud and asphalt. Then jumped on my back. I am still
recovering. Clothes are washed and clean, but my injuries are not gone
away yet.

Wednesday January 23 I stopped at the Walter Reed Dog park. We didn't
even get through the gates before a foxhound was snarling and trying
to bite my dog. He *(my dog) was anxious to go in so I opened the
gate. Five dogs pounced on him and harassed him with aggressive
behavior. The owners were doing NOTHING about it. The dogs had my dog
on his back and were steady attacking. One owner did pull one of his
dogs off and my dog broke away and ran to me. These dogs continued to
attack and I smacked them with the non-buckle end of the leash to get
them off us. Okay - now these dogs are attacking BOTH of us and the
owner is saying 'don't hit my dog'. I was not in a situation where I
could do anything to get my dog out of there - surrounded by attacking
dogs, and I was not hitting them hard, just flipping the end of the
leash at them to distract so we could get away. We made it down the
hill - with the other dogs chasing us, My dog WANTED to leave - he
never wants to leave the dog park, just so you know.

I am not believing that the man would be more concerned for his dogs
than for another human, for one thing, the other thing is that I can't
believe no one would even try to control their dogs! The owners,
except for the one man were just standing there watching like it was a
spectator sport. These dogs were all big animals with known aggressive
genes but these people were unwilling to control them.
Needless to say I am really unhappy with the dog parks right now and
have no wish to return anytime soon.

What type of aggressive behavior?  Humping, ganging up, biting?
Were owners present and were they uncooperative in heading off
the problem?

Aggressiveness is often the failure of the owner to act in either
calling a dog off or removing the dog from the area.

None of us wants aggressiveness in the park but it would be
helpful to have a better characterization of the events.  I have been
down there when several dogs engaged in rough play but all owners
seem to understand the play and accepted it or took their dog to farther
reaches of the park and made clear they did not want to continue the
interactions.  When dogs have become aggressive I have been pleased to
see owner leash their pet and leave the park.

I have not been down for a couple of weeks and hate to hear that
our rules are not bing followed.  The park must be safe for pet and
owner.  SUZ

It is a county rule that aggresive dogs are not allowed in any of the CCAs. (dog
parks). As
stated in the posted rules: "Dogs shall be removed at the first sign of
aggression.
Aggressive dogs shall not be permitted within any designated off-leash CCA.
"Aggressive
dog" is defined as a dog(s) posing a threat to human beings or other animals.
Handlers are
legally responsible for their dog(s) and any injury caused by them." Any dog
bite should
be reported to animal control. Numbers are posted on the bulletin board in the
park.

When this happened, di you say anything to the owners? People with
agressive dogs should take care of their dogs, or be asked to leave the
park. I believe we have the right to call animal control if people
refuse to take care of their dogs.

Shirlington CCA (Dog Park) is to remain open everyone must take responsibility
in making
sure all dog waste is picked up and disposed of properly in one of the large
black
containers. One of the rules of the CCAs is that handlers must have their
dog(s) in sight at
all times. This is not only for your dog's safety but it is the only way to
make sure you see
to pick up after your dog each time. If you see that someone has not picked up
after their
dog please bring it to their attention. You are responsible for picking after
your dog not
only in the park itself but anywhere in the county. There is a $100 fine for
not complying
with this county ordnance. Thank you for your help.

The county has infomed us that lawn chairs or any movable furniture are not
allowed to be
left in the park especially not in the stream bed. As the warning signs
indicated they are
okay if the chairs are stacked against the inside of the fence when not in use.
If the chairs
are left down by the stream the county will remove and dispose them.

I know that our dog trainer boards dogs in her home but I'm not sure if
she has any more spots open for Memorial Day weekend. Her website is
http://www.k-9divine.com. And if she is full I think that Dogs by Day
& Night may have a couple more spots open: http://www.dogsbyday.com.

Hope that helps!

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the

We are conducting this poll to see how park users
feel about the openings in the fence for access to the stream;
whether you prefer to have the openings replaced with gates
that can be opened and closed or
if you prefer to leave the openings as they are.

o I prefer to have the openings replaced by gates
o I prefer to leave the openings as they are

Thank you to everyone who participated in the clean up on the 19th. Your help
was
greatly appreciated. The park looked great afterwards. Let's see if we can
keep it that way
by reminding people to clean up after their dogs and by picking up any trash you
happen
to see.
There was a survey taken on the day of the clean up about the openings in the
fence; if
you would like to have gates installed instead of the openings or leave them as
they are. If
you did not get a chance to respond I have posted the poll on this site. See
previous
message.

Hi All,

I'm going out of town for a week over the Memorial Day holiday. Does
anyone have the contact of a good boarder that you could recommend?

Better yet, would anyone who knows Maggie (boxer) be willing to watch
her for the week. I know it's a lot to ask, but she'd be better off.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks,
Stacey and Maggie
