<EOM>Thanks for iviting me. I am obsessed
with tortioses. I have a Russian tortiose. Her name is
Charlie Smirnoff. I call her Mrs. Murtle. I was wondering
if anybody had any information on her. I cant seem

Hello i am new to the club. i have 1 baby box
turtle named Fred. Well he isn't a baby anymore
(although he will ALWAYS be my baby!!!). He is almost 2 and
1/2 inches now! when i got him he was the size of a
quarter. he had a twin brother named Lloyd who died on
December 14th, 1999 because he fell onto his back
underneath the heatlamp :o( Fred misses Lloyd and doesn't
explore and get as much excerse as he used to when he had
a buddy to play with. Fred is almost 1 and a half.
his birthday is on October 11th, 1998. I got him from
a breeder in the California Turtle And Tortois
Club. If you have ANY questions/comments on box turtles
feel free to e-mail me and i will send you some info,
answer your questions, and even send you a blueprint

Thanks for all of the suggestions, but i ahave
tried all of these things, And much to my amazement i
observed the first mateing activity that i have seen since
the one very excitable male i had at that time passed
on from a problem with his sexual organ, that was
five years ago, so maybe they are all done morning the
loss of him,i doubt that, but at least there is some
activity starting again, maybe i will be successfull this
time. All of the eggs bred from him were infertile so i
have never been lucky enough to hatch any of
them.

Yes my experience has been that they are very violent
and they do often bite, the female, but they recover
quickly. The best part is the noise the male makes that is
comical.

Mating season is in early Spring. The warm
weather & longer daylight usually puts the males in the
mood. Courtship can become somewhat violent. The males
will do a lot of head bobbing when he approaches the
females. He may ram into her shell & even bite her until
she becomes submissive. (Im not sure but I think I
read somewhere else that they have to be at least five
years old) Also you may try seaprating the males from
the females for awhile and even changing their
enviorment & diet. Offer them new foods and see if this
makes them more curious.

The Shamans of the Iroquois Nations tell a story
about a sulky & hypersensive man who in a fit of rage
pushes his wife into the abyss. A great turtle catches
the falling woman on the back of his shell. The
otter, beaver & muskrat bring bits of magic earth to the
turtles shell to form a new earth. The turtle called a
summit to discuss how to bring light & heat to the
crying woman. A small turtle climbs to the clouds &
gathers two large balls of lighting. He throws them to
the large turtle thereby creating the sun and the
moon.

According to anicent Chinese legend. Kwei was a
divine tortoise. Kwei was embodied in the constellation
Ursa Major. Foe 18,000 years Kwei supervised the
formation of the earth. He expanded the Heavens & placed
the sun & moon & stars there. When that was done he
took thought & by thinking he conceived & produced the
great millennial turtles of China & Japan. These
turtles seek truth & assist mankind. They also support
the worlds burdens by holding up the continents on
the back of their shells. They assisted China's
Emperors by supporting the foundation of a great wall
