Hi, I just received a 1 1/2 inch Red Eared Slider as a rescue. He
seems to be suffering from "soft shell". It could actually tear if
tried. I have him basking in the sun trying to bring his temperature
up. I'm not very familiar with turtle deseases, or how to cure this.
Does anyone know how to help him get better. I guess he needs vitamin
C & D, and plenty of dry basking. I know they only eat in water
though. I'm studing veterinary medicine to be an assistant, I own a
rat & Mouse group on yahoo called "Mice_Advice". I could tell you
anything you need to know about dogs, cats, mice and rats, but
turtles are a diffrent story. lol If anyone could help, thank you!-

You may add some salt to his water, that will help shell damage. Also
sounds like he needs some calsium (sp) Most pet shops have the little
white turtle blocks you can add to the water. Some are also
medicated. What are you feeding him? Make sure he getts plenty of
earth worms & offer different fruits & veggies.
DO NOT give him hamburger, pork or ham! Turtles like those foods but
they ARE NOT good for them.
Turkey & Chicken is alright & good for turtles. You can also buy
calsium powder to sprinkle over their food. Or even put "Tums" (anti-
acid) in their water.Make sure you change his water every day. Let
him decide how much time he wants to spend in the water & how much
time he wants to sun bathe. A wading pool in half shade & half sun
would allow him to choose. Never put a tank out doors in the sun! A
turtle will bake in it very quickly. It doesn;t take long for them to
heat up. Stress is also very harmful for a sick turtle. So try not to
handle him any more than nessasary. Help him feel safe & secure, Give
him a place to hide.

Direct sunlight ( meaning that it hasn't gone through glass, which
filters out ultraviolet rays ) is good for turtles, but it is
important that they also have shade so that they won't get too hot.
Hope your turtle gets better. - Benny the fan -

Benny and I both had ideas where the story was going,
I know vaguely what he wants to do, and I was going to
involve Gamera and the Gamera girls again, we both
had our own plotlines. However, both of us have all
sorts of other things to do: for example, I just got
a manuscript of several hundred pages finished,
xeroxed and sent off. BTW, Benny may be able to get
photos of the two box turtles he keeps for the
scapbook, but he would have to sent copies to you
through the regular mail. I will mention this to him
if he doesn't get here first on his own. Best wishes,
Dale D.

I tend to get behing on a lot of things, I was working on a couple of
other stories and I haven't written anything on them lately, either.
But rest assured, Touche' Turtle will yet triumph over Bebop, or
Snograss, or whoever the bad guy is. - Benny the Bebop -

Tessie got out her poodle skirt & bobby socks. She looked forward to
the Halloween party coming up next week. She didn't really believe
the old house where the party was being held was haunted.
Claire, her friend was scared to death but had agreed to go with her
& stay at least until Touche showed up. And Barbie was supose to join
her there later also. Barbie enjoyed harmless black magic and ghost
stories.

I think in fairy stories, they usually say that the good guys are
using "white magic", that is if they are supposed to be using magic
at all. "Black magic" is what the bad guys ( such as the witches that
are in with Judge Snograss in the Touche Turtle story ) are supposed
to use. The sleight--of--hand type of magic that is practiced by
modern magicians is called simply "magic" or maybe "stage magic" or
something like that. - Benny the Bebop -

Barbie concidered herself as a witch jester and only cast spells as
jokes. But since she never knew the formula's they usually backfired
on her. She didn't really believe in witchcraft, she thought it was
all a game.
The three friends arrived early at the haunted house to set up
decorations & refreshments. The silverware were in minture coffins,
the mugs were plastic skulls. Tonestones outlined the doorways. A
melted witch hat lay near a bucket of water. Flying monkeys appeared
to be looking in the windows. The tables centerpiece was a crytal
ball. A hourglass sat on one coffee table. Cobwebs & spiders hung
from the lamps.
Up stairs the turtle friends made name plaques of famouse monsters to
hang on the doors. Halloween music was piped throughout the main
floor- but could be heard upstairs as well. The door bell sounded
like a eerie scream, which startled the girls. The guest were
starting to arrive...

"Wish I still had my three cents Bebop stole from me!" the witch

money back.

But Bebop was still in the spooky old haunted house with his friends,
fighting the "Hideous Jabbering Head of Judge" and his twelve ghastly
ghostly jurors of doom. "I will get ye all! OOOUUUUAAAHHHHH!" wailed
the Hideous Jabbering Head of Judge, swooping towards them. "Then I
will cut off all your heads, but instead of shrinking them, I will
blow them up to ghastly porportions and have a bunch of new hideous
jabbering sidekick heads, you can be the visitor's gallery in my evil
courtroom of doom!"

"Never!" cried the heroic Touche' Turtle, brandishing his trusty
sword heroicaly. Bebop didn't have a sword, so he picked up what
looked like a broom that happened to be in darkened corner of the
room...

"I want my three cents! " squawked the old broom in Bebop's hand. It
sounded just like the old witch whose three cents Bebop had stolen
years ago.

Bebop gaped in surprise, although no one noticed under the hood he
was wearing. "I don't have it any more! I spent it!" he said.

"Then you can't use this broom until you pay up!" the voice said. A
red--headed woodpecker ran out and snatched the broom from his hand,
then ran and stuffed it in a closet and locked it. "Huh--huh--huh--
huh--huh!" he laughed. Bebop recognized the crazy woodpecker as the
same one who wouldn't let the witch have her broom until she paid him
the fifty cents she owed him. Although he did wonder why the
woodpecker now seemed to be in with the witch when they had been
fighting each other.

"But this is a matter of life or death!" Bebop protested.

"Pay the three cents!" insisted the red--headed woodpecker.

"But I need it to fight the ghosts with!" insisted Bebop. "I want to
make a clean sweep of the place!"

"Pay the three cents!" insisted the red--headed woodpecker again. It
was like listening to a broken record, at least for those of us who
know what a records is. Some people deny knowing what records are at
all, a somewhat dubious accomplishment they seem to take
considerable pride in.

"I'll gladly pay you Tuesday!" declared Bebop, in desperation
resorting to one of Wimpy's lines, a tactic he had been known to
employ on the good fairy at times.

"Pat the three cents!" insisted the red--headed woodpecker. "And if
that business doesn't work on a dumb blonde, you oughta know it
wouldn't work on a smart redhead like me!"

"I gotta have that broom!" Bebop cried, throwing himself at the
door. He was intercepted by the woodpecker, who had remarkable
strength for someone of his diminuative stature, although that could
vary at times according to what height he needed to be for the
occasion. Bebop found himself hurled to the floor with a force that
threatened to wreck the roof over the head of the termites. "The
good fairy did that to me too!" he complained. It was almost like
watching reruns on tv, except that didn't usually involve taking a
beating.

"Pay the three cents!" demanded the woodpecker again.

Bebop reached into his pockets, now knowing what else to do. But he
didn't have the three cents- he'd spent it to buy candy a long time
ago.

"See what mischief gets you into!" a voice scolded Bebop. It was the
good fairy! That was who the Beautiful Verna had really been all
along, but Bebop had only realized when she lapsed into her old
familiar moralizing!

"I wish I hadn't done it now, but I already did it," said
Bebop. "Could you loan me three cents, pal? "

The good fairy raised an eyebrow. "If I shelled out shekels every
time you asked for them, my piggy bank would go hungry," she
said. "Besides, if I gave you three cents, people might take me for
the old witch."

"They couldn't take the most beautiful girl in the world for that old
hag!" Bebop told her. "Your eyes, your lips, your beautiful hair-
your lovely form beyond compare!"

"Flattery will get you nowhere. But don't you get a lot more
appreciative when you want something?" the good fairy
observed. "Besides, you left out the part about my lovely cheekbones,
by beautiful legs, my- "

"This is a kid's story!" complained Touche' Turtle.

"You ain't kiddin'!" the good fairy shot back. "Most of my stories
got my boyfriend in them!"

"Good thing I managed to beat off the Hideous Jabbering Head of
Judge and his evil jurors, the twelve ghastly ghostly head of doom,"
said Touche'. "Otherwise they might have gotten you two when you
weren't looking."

"I don't know if that Hideous Jabbering Head of Judge ever took a
look at me at all," the good fairy said, somewhat
disappointedly. "Can you imagine wanting to cut my head off a body
like this? And besides it's outstanding qualities, I was always
kinda attached to it anyway."

"His marbles must have fallen out the bottom when they cut his head
off," said Bebop, who couldn't quite imagine it either.

"Well, you were wearing a sheet until you got tired of it and took
it off," Touche' reminded the good fairy. "The Hideous Jabbering
Head of Judge might not have gotten a good look at you."

"Remind me to not cover up this snazzy good fairy outfit next time,"
the good fairy replied.

"Bebop," the good fairy said, turning to that worthy ( ? ), "I can
almost forgive you for everything else you done when I think of this
gorgeous good fairy outfit you give me. Only I wonder where you got
it from? Ain't you the guy that swipes his clothes off of
scarecrows?"

"That came from your fan club," Bebop explained. "I don't know where
they got it from either, they usually make a living stealing each
other's laundry and being a group of men, I wouldn't have thought
they'd find glad rags like that in the take."

"What ever became of those nuts?" asked Touche'. "Weren't you trying
to rehabilitate them on the magic island?"

"They liked being donkeys too much," the good fairy said, somewhat
regretfully. "They really like living in a stable and eating oats, I
don't suppose we'll ever get them outta there. Of course, I always
did say they was full of- "

"This is a kid's story!" Touche' protested.

" We GOT All the revenant Noggins!" said Redbeard,
flourishing a large net of the type usually employed
to snatch up looneys for the funny farm, "And they're
all fakes, made of paper-mache with little model
airplane engines in them and little radios to
broadcast the sound" Redbeard looked somewhat
dissapointed, but the girrls looked much happier.
"I would have gotten away eith it, too, if it hadn't
been for you jkids and your big stupid-looking dog!"
snarled the fake Judge head from the net.
"Hey, what am I , chopped liver??!!?" said Touche.

"Arf!" said Dumb--Dumb, happy to have recieved some recognition,
even though he seemingly had sought to avoid it earlier by
disguising himself as a ghost by wearing a sheet. "And Bebop, thanks
for giving me this ghost disguise," he added, as an afterthought.

"It was nothing," said Bebop, "just some more laundry I stole from
the good fairy's fans after they stole it off of somebody else."

"I was wondering where all my sheets went to," remarked the good
fairy, taking a closer look at all the sheets for the first
time. "Those dirty rats! They took all my sheets I stole from that
hotel I was staying at!"

"At least that pest Charlie Brown didn't bother me when I was
wearing a sheet as a disguise," said the Lovely Rita, who was also
known as the little red--headed girl. "That guy's almost as big a
nuisance as your boyfriend!"

"That'd take some doing," the good fairy observed. "There ain't a
redhead safe within a hundred miles of him!"

Touche' was beginning to wonder if he shouldn't replace the
supporting cast in his story. He was starting to think the good
fairy was almost as much of a problem as Bebop. But then, those two
did go back a long way together... how they could go back that far,
when the good fairy wasn't even that old yet herself, was something
else to ponder.
