All things being equal, I think the recovery for this procedure is 8 weeks
regardless of whether one or both hips are done. It takes 8 weeks for the bones
to fuse.

It's hard to say what caused the screws to come loose. He was in the hospital
for the first 3 weeks. He was only home a week before the 4 week x-rays revealed
the problem, and I think we began to see signs of a problem shortly after he
came home.

The reason he spent 8 weeks in the kennel at the hospital after the second
surgery was because the surgeon didn't want to take any chances that the screws
would come out again. BTW, after the bones fuse back together, the plates and
screws are redundant--they are not needed anymore, but they don't do back in to
take them out.

Our pup (Hayduke) received excellent care in the hospital. Although we had to
pay for the additional 8 weeks of boarding at the hospital for the second
procedure (at a minimal rate) the surgeon didn't charge us for the second
surgery.

Hope this helps.

Jack

Was the lengthy hospital stay due to both hips being done at the same time or
were there other complications? Do the doctors think the screws came loose
because of both hips being done at the same time?

Thank you for this insight!
