One of the Rancher strains of the Colonial Spanish horse is the Wilbur-Cruce horse. Eva Antonia Wilbur-Cruce, author of the book "A Beautiful Cruel Country" was a third generation rancher in southern Arizona, close to the Mexican border.

Colonial Spanish Horses are of great historic importance in the New World. They descend from horses introduced from Spain, and possibly North Africa, during the period of the conquest of the New World. In the New World this colonial resource has become differentiated into a number of breeds, and the North American representatives are only one of many such breeds throughout the America. These horses are a direct remnant of the horses of the Golden Age of Spain, which type is now mostly or wholly extinct in Spain. The Colonial Spanish horses are therefore a treasure chest of genetic wealth from a time long gone. In addition, they are capable and durable mounts for a wide variety of equine pursuits, and their abilities have been vastly undervalued for most of the 1900s.

Spanish Mustang Registry Homepage
Horses not out of registered sire and dam are required to produce written, documented history of the horse or herd from which the horse came, submit said documentation and color photos taken in summer coat to the Registrar who will in turn submit them to the Directors. If the Directors ascertain the history is adequate and the photos show that the horse may have the physical qualifications to warrant inspection, the owner shall then request an application for inspection from the Registrar and will be notified when the next annual meeting will be held. At that time the horse can be physically inspected by certified SMR inspectors to ascertain if the horse meets the physical criteria required. Inspection does not in any way guarantee acceptance. Horses must be two years or over to be inspected. Owners of BLM horses to be inspected MUST have ownership papers from the government showing title to said horse(s).
