Hello Sarah and Everyone --

Here's information about setting Raven to open sounds using a specific
view. There are three options.

Raven opens sound files using the Default Sound Window preset, and it
is set up at first to use both the waveform and spectrogram views.

1) You can save over this Default:
Set up the sound window the way you'd like it to open
Right-click (or View menu) > Window Preset > Save Default

2) You can save a new Sound Window preset:
Set up the sound window the way you'd like it to open
Right-click (or View menu) > Window Preset > Save As
To open a sound using this new preset, select the preset when the
Configure New Sound Window dialog box appears.

3) Alter the RavenPreferences.txt file. This might be considered
"advanced" but it's really very simple...and it makes it so that a
different preset is automatically used without you having to do anything.

First make a new Window Preset (option 2 above)
Then, in the Raven folder, where all the Raven program files are
stored, find the RavenPreferences.txt file.
Open RavenPreferences.txt (using Notepad or another simple text
program is fine)
Scroll down, near the end of the file find:
raven.preset.soundWindow.defaultPreset=NameOfNewPreset
Save the text file, close and reopen Raven.
You can change back to the Default using the same procedure.

Have fun!

Hi Sarah,

As Shelagh mentioned, saving workspaces is very convenient,
particularly when you have set up a page and want to continue working
with it later on.

You can also create presets for individual items, including the Sound
Window (which would include axes settings) and Spectrogram Parameters.
To see all the features for which you can create presets, use Window >
Preset Manager. Click on the drop-down menu to see a list.

Page 41 in the Raven Users Manual (which you can access under Help in
Raven) describes options for setting Sound Window presets. This
includes spectrogram parameters, or you can create independent
spectrogram parameter presets.

You can apply a window preset that you have already saved to the
active sound window, and you can specify a window preset to apply when
you first open a sound file. That way, you can apply the same
parameters to different sound files.

Please let me know if you have more questions. I'll find out about
setting Raven to open with a specific view and let you know.

Hi Sarah,

For Raven, to save your settings select 'Save Workspace' under the file menu. Whatever axes settings and spectrogram and waveform settings you have selected will be maintained (i.e. if waveforms are off, they will be off next time you open that workspace). In the future, just open that workspace prior to opening your audio files.  hope this helps!

Best,
Shelagh

Hi folks,
I loaded an edited ambient recording from Bear Trap Meadows on my
website. I'd appreciate if anyone feels like helping me ID any of the
calls. The site is www.thethirdbarn.org
One can find the recording by going to the following very long address
and going to the bottom of the page to find Bear Trap Meadow link

Hi Recordists,
Finally joined, and posted some photos for you, including from the
following week when my husband John joined me to bird in San Diego
County and nearby. Picked out some recording equipment but did not get
it yet. The persistent resident songbirds such as cardinals and
Carolina wrens are familiar yet heard in new ways.
Meanwhile at work (Fisheries Service) I've been doing a larval crab
survey and my group has a study of movements of ultrasonic tagged
bluefish in an estuary related to tidal fronts and prey fish.
I've enjoyed reading your posts,
Keep on recording!

Hi Everyone!

I have really enjoyed hearing updates from all of you about what you are doing, seems like the course was as inspiring to many as it was to me! ;-)  I have been recording a LOT since I've been back.  First I spent some time in the Adirondacks trying to figure things out.  There were some pretty funny moments, mostly to do with me learning that trails are very handy out here in the east where the underbrush is out of control, especially in the dark with lots of equipment cords.  And I have become very cozy with the hordes of insects, and have continued the tradition of great buzzing recordings that Erik M. started. :-)  Anyway, I taking off today for about 3 weeks on the Hudson River for some more recordings.  I finally got my Tascam HD-P2 order in, so I will now be  using that.  I know that some were interested in how it is, so don't worry, it has finally come and I will give a full update once it has been tested in the field.  Hope you are all well!

Hi all,

I finally posted my pictures from the class outings. Unfortuantely I
didn't remember my camera every day, so did not get to document all of
the locations. At least I remembered to make the coffee! I've heard
from several of you already getting out there and putting your new

Hello fellow recordists...
Your spirit is still alive and well in the S/N Mts. Had 4 fun & challenging days returning to all the recording locations. Still Snow on the Buttes (which we hiked) with endless meadows of wild flowers. The early morning skies of Marble Hot Springs were filled with White Pelicans and Ibis with lots of new Sandhill Crane families and Horned Larks...then on to Antelope Valley which has really greened out. Yuba Pass, Chapman Saddle & Beartrap Meadows....are mostly dry and filled with lush green under story and color. We had a great 4-wheeling experience for some 14 miles on the Haskell Peak (Forest Rd. 09) up to the Howard Creek Mine/Ghost Camp then on to Freeman and Church Meadows which comes out up near the top of Gold Lake. Really beautiful & quiet areas!  (Sardine Lake Lodge is great for dinner by the by. ) Most of the nesting scene was over. Not quite the intensity of the spring fling. It was very quiet after July 4th thankfully. Great kayaking on the Lakes Basin.  Nice part of the earth to have rediscovered thanks to the Cornell folks.... Off to Maui later in the week.  Be Well. Cheers!  tom

Eric,

Great to hear from you! I think that many of us had an incredible experience that week and I know that for me, the memories are still lingering throughout my daily activities. It's hard to share with my family how inspirational that week was. You seemed to really get excited about each day, which for me, was contagious, and by the end of the week you were really getting some quality recordings.
I also felt a great connection with you and I really meant it when I said that you may have the greatest impact of all of us there by empowering your students with the ability to contribute to citizen science. You have an opportunity to share your passion with those kids which as I said before, is contagious. My family is calling me out to light some fireworks so I should go. Let's stay in touch. I should have my equipment here by Friday and I'll be eager to get out and record. Take care Eric! I'd be happy to i.d more calls. My address is :

Pulling out of the driveway shortly for a return trip to our newly minted and enshrined classgrounds.  Can't wait. The  Cruiser is smiling as well. Kayaks, recorders, Kipling, (my bulldog) and fellow birder.  Dinner tonight at Sardine Lake Lodge tonight!

Attempted to record locally yesterday and did not realize until I got all set up that the backgrd was an orchestra of chickens, goats and a mule... and a beeping truck backing up.....the "other" dawn chorus.! Decided on a latte instead.  Happy 4th of July!   tom

Hi again,

I know I mentioned to several of you that there is a new Sony HiMD
coming out on the market. It is currently available in Japan & Great
Britain (I believe) but is not yet available in North America. Here is
a link to some photos and info on the machine (the MZ-RH1); you'll see
they've moved the meters & gain control to the side and the control
buttons are still on the front but right next to the side with the
meters for more easy control. The users manual is also available for
download at this site.

Enjoy!

Thanks for setting it up, Tom.

On the recording end of things: sometimes one just has to go with the
flow. As a result of this philosophy, I've got great recordings of
trucks, sprinklers, and motor boats in Lake Tahoo and helicopters from
LA. Yesterday morning I made some nice recordings of wind along the

Hello all.I don't know about all of the rest of you but I can't seem
to get our last week together out of my mind. So many beautiful places
seen and (heard) with so many amazing people. I feel more inspired now
than I have for several years and I have found a new addiction to
getting up at 4:15 am to catch the pre-dawn (dawn) chorus. I feel like
I am missing out waking up too late, especially as the days warm and
the songsters begin to fade.
The past two mornings I have risen at 4:00am and gotten out into the
field which has been amazing and I was even able to drag a fellow
birding friend out with me this morning. The temperature was 75
degrees f. at 5:30 am this morning and it is supposed to hit 105 deg
today! The bonus was spotting our first Bewick's Wren family in the
watershed as well as getting right up on a Blue Grouse. We also
watched a juvenile Golden Eagle and parent for awhile as well as
experiencing some great pre-dawn songs of Western Kingbirds and
Bullock's Orioles as well as several others.
The only bad side to all of this is that I have wait another week to
receive my Telinga Stereo Dat Microphone/parabolic dish/ Pro-6 handle
from Doug Van Gausig. It's kind of like showing up to the beach on a
perfect day without a swim suit. I must of said atleast ten times, "If I
only had a microphone!" Especially as I was standing less than ten
feet from a Luzuli Bunting with an exceptionally unique song,no
wind,planes,nothing....but him! I know only you all can understand the
pain. Thanks again to you all for all the laughs and good times. A
special thanks again to Tom for yet another grand accomplishment and
yet another thanks to the Cornell Crew especially Dave and Randy who I
never had a chance to personally thank them for all their great advice
and help. I'll let you all know how the new mic works out.
        Happy recording. Kyle
