Actually, the single most important measurement is the KH, or tempory hardness. I make a VERY big deal out of it, becuase a drop in KH can kill all your fish....

5~7 (3-4inch) Koi will be perfectly happy in a 20 gallon for at least 30 days. I wouldnt advise longer than that if you are going to be putting them outside....
